Principal seems to be very passive and has no idea what is going on in his school.Positive note....excellent vice-principal who has a great rapport with parents.Definitely not the awesome school it used to be.

Posted: 12/28/2014 by parentI would give this school a 4 1/2 star rating but the choices are 4 or 5. I chose Aina Haina as the area to live in when we moved here 11 months ago because it isa beautiful area, but one of the prerequisites was an elementary school with exceptional ratings. Aina Haina Elementary carries a 9/10 Great School rating andso we chose this school. We have LOVED it so far! Our daughter's kindergarten teacher is great with the kids; it is a class of 19 students. I love the parents of theother students I have met, and the parent involvement definitely makes a good school "great". I appreciate that as we walk through the school when I pick mydaughter up, other faculty (librarian, teacher's assistants, PE teacher, etc) know her name...it is because they take the time to get to know each student and makethem feel important. I have enjoyed everything from the after-school programs available, level and creativity of their projects/homework, and the organization ofcommunication to the child's family (daily correspondence through a folder program, communication through an online classroom page on Shutterfly, etc). Mydaughter is thriving and I am so happy I have found this school.

Students at this age will be obnoxious or act in certain ways that arentappealing to adults. It needs to be,moderated but not make them feel like they are just being pushed around with rules. I like being a student at niu valleyoverall.

The Vice Principal is a pompous ignoramus with poorsocial skills. If any new teachers come aboard, they are ill treated. 1/3 of their teachers quit last year due to poor administration. That says a lot. Students are lazyand unmotivated, and no matter how much time and effort they put into try and help them, the students don't care...which says something about their upbringing.Don't come to teach at this school. You will get burned by the admin, the older, experienced faculty, and the parents of the students who fail due to their ownshortcomings.

Posted: 11/26/2015 by parentThe potential is for this school to be amazing. They don't seem to want to live up to that. There is a core of very burnt out teachers (hey I get it, I'm a teacher)who are just bitter and uncaring. Communication Is poor and there is no real leadership from administration. Total lack of innovative problem solving on anylevel. Will be leaving at semester, my kids loved school prior to this experience, we hope to find that again and put this in our past. Bright side, there are acouple first year teachers who are phenomenal, motivated, caring, compassionate and willing to think outside the box. I can tell they are really rooting for kids toboth learn and find success. Rumble is they are looking at other schools for next year. I can't blame them. Teachers talk and emails parents about how muchmore they could do if it were a private school, problem is, that would not change their lack of caring, energy, or support of students. And frankly, comparativelythis school has a wealthy core, access to technology, decent facilities, it could be wonderful. No school spirit, no encouragement of free thinking, we are stillawaiting our first positive feedback ever for either of my kids from any teacher.

She was also verbally abused along with my wife from this child.The schools response for the students to sign a contract to stay away from each other....What is that? This boy is 14 and he's beating up a 12 year old girl andthat's the response from the Vice Principal. Ridiculous. if I could afford private school I would send my child.

Posted: 7/30/2014 by otherThe teachers pay no mind to a child if their falling behind, the only teacher who really cared was my social studies teacher, and the whole school overall has thatsorta Hostile feel to it, I wish I could go to a different school, but its the only relatively close school. Also, they may been one of the best schools, but the work isusually way ahead of us. -Student

Posted: 4/28/2014 by parentFrom the 2 years we've been at this school, it appears the only thing of value is how many certifications and honors the teachers or principal receive, and theaccolades of their Band Program. Everything else is shot down the drain: no sports program, improvement in SPED, or professionalism when responding to parentinquiries. My 6th grader said there are days when the teachers don't teach - only giving speeches about their personal problems because they had a bad day.

Posted: 11/13/2013 by parentWe had our daughter in this school for one year. It was the worst school year she has ever had. There was a group of mean girls who made her life miserable. Wetried to help her work through it, but by the end of the year realized we just needed to get her into a safer environment and enrolled her in private school. Theteachers were fine and we liked the IB curriculum, but the school did not take bullying seriously.

Posted: 11/4/2013 by parentSome teachers are okay, however most are teaching their opinions. The 6th graders are reading a book about gay lovers because we have to "accept" everyone. Iam against this only because we need to "accept" everyone at this school except the religious students. Any type of christianity is not acceptable to talk about atthis school. Takes away freedom from the good kids.

The only thing is I wished we had heard about our child's progress from all the teachers before theprogress reports came home. Some teachers had emailed earlier, but I didn't realize there was another class to be concerned about. The counselor has beenworking with our child and took the time to talk with me briefly just as the school day started. Luckily we were on the same page and she was already working withour child. While every class, subject, or unit studied will be interesting, our child has to understand the work needed to get done no matter what. Still waiting forall the back work to get caught up, especially before the end of the quarter. Appreciate the teachers and counselor's interest in helping our child succeed. Alsolike the fact the school provides opportunities for parent learning and encourages communication with our child's teachers.

Posted: 9/23/2013 by parentMy daughter is in 6th grade and loves going to NVMS. She feels the teachers are approachable and the expectations are clearly stated. There's more homeworkthan 5th grade; however she finds time to complete her homework and participate in other activities outside of school. The principal had the vision and supportto make NVMS an International Baccalaureate school. Hurrary for public schools!

Posted: 4/26/2013 by parentMy son is attending this school this 2012-13 year. He has special education (SPED) classes but is too excelled for them. We moved him into general ed classesbut the teachers are too busy to help him and would rather help their more independent "smarter" students. So, he was forced back into SPED just to get theattention and time he needs to pass his class even if the content was far too easy. At one point, he was teaching one of his SPED classes because he alreadyknew the content so well! He just needed more time. There is no transitional classes and no protection for students wanting to get out of SPED to morechallenging classes. The tenured teachers ganged up on him last year and forced him back into SPED again because they felt he was too distracted. He wantedpreferential seating in those classes and was not allowed. This same thing has happened this year and I am ready to pull him out of this school. These tenuredteachers tend to be bullies and are not reprimanded by administration for their despicable and truly sad behavior. If you care about your developmentallydelayed child, don't put them in this school!

I am very involved and attendedorientation prior to arrival to 6th grade. They extensively review rules and dress code at orientation so we had no surprises. I would encourage all to GETinvolved!! Also make sure you READ the parent handbook. It is very helpful.

Posted: 9/12/2017 by parentAgree with the comment below. Don't expect much for support but overall we had alittle better experience. The choir teacher is so awesome and works her bunsoff. Had several other teachers we had great experiences with and others who were just short tempered and disinterested. They do put quite a bit of effort intocollege readiness and applying for college which is probably the thing they do best.

There are manystudents there who work hard and are deserving of their success. If you are in need of help whether it is academic, personal, or other look elsewhere.Disorganization with a who do you know atmosphere. Cliques that just make you sick, unbelievable the way the females in this school behave. Almost feels likeyour'e living in a different country, very odd.

In addition, the teachers have reallybad favoritism that make students not learn that well. Also, the principal doesn't treat his students well. He has favoritism over the students and is not a friendlytype of guy. For sports, they have AGAIN favoritism for that too! They don't pay attention to tennis and don't even come to the games to watch and take pictureswhich is horrible. They didn't give us new rackets/materials to play. The coach had to use his own money to cover it. Which I think is unfair because they didn'trenew his contract so he is not the coach for Kalani anymore. In addition, they didn't even pay for our uniforms too. OH AND THE BATHROOM IS DISGUSTINGSO THEY SHOULD PUT LITTLE TRASHCANS IN EACH STALL.
