Vocabulary /Vocabulario
States of Matter
SolidLiquidGasPlasma
Solids
•Have definite shape and definite volume
•Particles are tightly packed
Liquids•Do not have definite shape but do have definite volume
•Particles are loosely packed
Gases
•Do not have definite shape or definite volume
•Particles are very far apart
Matter:
Anything that has mass
and takes up space
Cualquier cosa que tenga masa
y ocupa espacio
Mass:
the amount of matter in an object
measured with a balance
la cantidad de materia en un objeto
medido con una escala
Volume:
the amount of space an object takes up
measured with a ruler or graduated cylinder

DO NOT LOOK INTO THE SACK!!!Using your senses try to determine what is
in your secret sack.Record your observations in your
notebook.
Physical Properties
Are characteristics or features that describe matter
Can be measured without changing the chemical properties

Properties of Matter include:
How it looks (shiny, dull, colored)
How it feels (hard, soft, rough, smooth)
How it smells (sweet, salty, flowery)
How it sounds (loud, soft, hollow)
How it tastes (sweet salty, bitter, sour)
What it does (bounce, bubble, tear)
Characteristic Properties
Are properties that do NOT change as mass, volume and/or shape change.
Are properties of a substance, not a specific object
Examples include/Ejemplos incluyen

Punto de ebullición

Characteristic Properties
Because characteristic properties are usually not affected by physical changes, they can be used to identify matter

Physical Characteristics of Water
Boiling point of water is 212°F (99.98°C)
Melting point of water is 32°F (0°C)
Punto de ebullición del agua es de 212 ° F ( 99,98 ° C )
Punto de fusión del agua es de 32 ° F ( 0 ° C )

Melting Point Activity
Watch video of two pieces of ice melting on two similar surfaces.
One surface is made of metalThe other is made of plastic
Melting Point Activity
Which melted fastest, metal or plastic?
Where did the energy come from to melt the ice?
What do you think happened to the speed of the molecules in the ice when it was heated?
Melting Point ActivityWrite in your notebook
Which melted fastest, metal or plastic?
Where did the energy come from to melt the ice?
What do you think happened to the speed of the molecules in the ice when it was heated?
Melting Point ActivityWrite in your notebook
How can you make ice melt faster?

How do you explain this?
Solubility
Solubility is a measure of how much solute can dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature.
Solubility is a characteristic property of matter.
Solubility
The substance in which something is dissolved in is called the solvent
The solute is what is dissolved in the solvent.
Solution
Any substance - solid, liquid,or gas – that is evenly distributed through another substance – solid, liquid, or gas.
Example/Ejemplo
Saltwater
–Salt is the solute
–Water is the solvent
Agua salada
–Sal es el soluto
–El agua es el disolvente
Solubility Lab
Put one teaspoon of each substance (solvent) into water (solute).
Stir a littleRecord in your
journal what you see.
