6Module 5 Embedding HTML (YouTube) into a Flipchart

Embedding HTML into flipcharts is a great tool. An example recently where I have done this: for our Easter program that is coming up in a few weeks. I wanted to use the music from a YouTube video; however, I didnt want my students or parents in the program to see anything except the video itself. Therefore I put the embedded video into a flipchart so that I am able to only show the video. I am now going to walk through how to do that. Go to You Tube, find a video and click on the Share button. Then click on the Embed button.A window appears with the HTML selected. Right-click on this text and select Copy.In ActivInspire click on the Main Menu button.Select Insert.Select Link.Select Embedded HTMLRight-click in the window and select Paste.Click OK. The video is now added to the page as an embedded placeholder. With the Select tool drag around the video to select it. You can now resize and reposition the video.

7Module 6 Great & Fun Teacher TipsLearn how to master the software.Create interactive lessons, not just presentations.Take advantage of the resources out there.Print out your flipcharts.Prepare well, but dont overprepare.Let your students make flipcharts.Let your students use the activpenKids love seeing themselves on flipchart pages.Dont forget page notes.

Learn how to master the software.Master at least one new Activstudio feature each week. The Activstudio software is very powerful, and building on your knowledge of it will benefit your students.

Create interactive lessons, not just presentationsEveryone hates to sit through slideshows and lectures even adults. When considering the role of the student in the lesson, attempt to create multiple opportunities for interaction, response and feedback. You want the students actively participating in the lesson, not just serving as a passive audience to a presentation.

Take advantage of the resources out there.Promethean Planet has tons of lessons to download and try out. Even it you dont like certain pages or the order of the lesson, you can always change it and adapt it for your classroom and style.

Print out your flipchartsSounds obvious I know, but when designing interactive flipcharts, remember that they can be printed and used as worksheets. I know before I had my Activboard and software, it was often difficult to give students an exact copy of the days notes (because of them being absent). With the use of the program, I am easily able to print off the notes for students.

Prepare well, but dont overprepare. The idea of having white space (or any other colour space whatever you fancy really) to encourage a spontaneous response from students is vital and such an easy thing to overlook.

Let your students make flipcharts...for fun, for show and tell, for a lesson to give to peers or younger children.

Let your students use the activpenI find the children love to be in control of the pen and they are delighted to see their writing on the board. Even those that object to writing with a pencil will give the pen a go, and if the board recognises their writing and converts it to type they are very proud of themselves. It is a great motivator.

Kids love seeing themselves on flipchart pagesCreate a folder of portrait type photos of the kids somewhere in your Resource Library. You can easily pop them on the page and add thought or speech bubbles. Kids love seeing themselves on flipchart pages!

Dont forget page notesAlways put in page notes when making or adapting a flipchart - you may know what you are doing now but may not remember this time next year!
