Thank you for your interest in Georgia Tech’s eight-day Project Management Leadership Program. This document provides details on the program content, instructor profiles, and the registration process. The Georgia Tech College of Management, ranked in the Top 30 Business Schools in the country by US News and World Report, offers an innovative project management leadership training program that helps managers increase their project management knowledge and improve the leadership skills that significantly improve project planning, innovation and success. The program is taught by Georgia Tech professors and real-world project management practitioners. Georgia Tech has partnered with BeOne Now, a PMI Registered Education Provider. Real-world practitioners from BeOne Now will lead participants through project management fundamentals, including A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) in Module I. The course concludes with a simulated project that participants will work through in teams to cement the knowledge gained throughout the course. INTRODUCTION Day 1: Project Management Overview

Project Management Overview and Introduction to Project Planning Professor Stelios Kavadias, Georgia Tech College of Management

Dr. Stelios Kavadias will provide research data on why senior executives across multiple industries report that project management knowledge and skills are becoming a critical competency for managers at all levels of the organization. The discussion will include an overview of key project management trends, the role of the PMBOK® Guide, and introduction of Georgia Tech’s strategic project management partner, BeOne Now (PMI Registered Education Provider).

Project Management Environment MaryGrace Allenchy, PMP, BeOne Now MaryGrace will present the critical processes and management requirements of programs and projects. Program/project management includes the integration of the processes that comprise a program or project environment. Participants will also explore the management styles and organizational structures necessary for effective programs and projects.

Project Management Concepts MaryGrace Allenchy, PMP, BeOne Now Participants will be introduced to best practices promoted by PMI and documented in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide). MaryGrace will present the five process groups (initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, and controlling and closing) and the nine management knowledge areas (communications, cost, human resources, integration, procurement, quality, risk, scope, and time management). In the afternoon session, participants will explore the initiating process. This session will include the functions and tools to effectively perform activities and produce deliverables, including the requirements for development of the Project Charter. MaryGrace will then lead the class into the planning process, focusing on the requirements for development of the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).

MaryGrace will present project management best practices procedures to follow, techniques to apply, and tasks to perform throughout the program or project life cycle. This session includes information on the functions and tools used to effectively perform the activities and produce the deliverables of the planning process. Participants will focus on the requirements for developing the network Diagram, determining the Critical Path, assigning Resources, and defining the Schedule.

Project Management Functions MaryGrace Allenchy, PMP, BeOne Now The morning session will focus on executing processes as well as monitoring and controlling them. This step includes team-building, conducting effective progress/status meetings, and applying the Earned Value Technique (EVT). MaryGrace will conclude Module I with a look at the closing process. Participants will learn functions and tools for effectively executing the closing process, including how to conduct project debrief and lessons-learned sessions, providing performance documentation and feedback, and archiving critical project documents.

INTRODUCTION Day 5: Review of Project Management Fundamentals

Project Management Fundamentals Review and Application Professor Stelios Kavadias, Georgia Tech College of Management

Stelios will introduce and facilitate two case studies and multiple small group activities that will synthesize the project management fundamentals learned in Module I. The Dragonfly case focuses on the importance of developing an accurate project scope definition and baseline management strategy. In the Flying Car case, participants will examine best practices in how to manage the different types of risks in a project. The case studies will set the stage for the project management simulator that serves as the capstone learning experience of the program.

Project Management Simulator Leah Paras, PMP, J.J. Glatt & Associates Joe Glatt, CCP, PMP, J.J. Glatt & Associates Projects rarely go according to plan. The Project Management Simulator allows participants to actively practice the skill of resolving variance to the plan in a non-threatening classroom environment. Participants form teams and are dropped into a project that is out of control and must be reigned in and completed successfully. Facilitated by experienced practitioners, the simulation will allow participants to learn to manage increasingly difficult issues by applying best practices to start up and execute a real world 30-week project. Teams will encounter the decisions and tradeoffs that experienced project managers make every day. Manipulation of schedules, customer and team member interactions, resource scheduling, and teamwork are required to deal with quality issues, schedule delays, and cost overruns. At the end of the three-day Project Management Simulator, each team will present their project results to the rest of the class. The simulation facilitators will provide an in-depth debrief for the program participants.

FACULTY PROFILES

Stylianos Kavadias, Ph.D. Stylianos (Stelios) Kavadias is the Edward J. Brown Jr. associate professor of Technology and Operations Management at the Georgia Tech College of Management. He is a popular instructor in the subjects of project management, performance measurements, and resource allocation in the project management and R&D processes. Dr. Kavadias’ work has been awarded second prize in the George B. Dantzig Best Dissertation Competition organized by the INFORMS organization. He has presented his work at conferences all across the world. His research interests include new product development and the management of technology. Stelios earned his Ph.D. in Management from INSEAD (France).


MaryGrace Allenchy, PMP MaryGrace Allenchey is the Director of the Project Management Leadership Practice for BeOne Now and is a PMI-certified Project Management Professional (PMP). Having extensive experience, Mrs. Allenchey has implemented and directed PMOs and managed projects in diverse industry sectors including telecommunications, information technology, education, healthcare, automotive, insurance, and retail. MaryGrace is a recipient of the PMI Distinguished Contribution Award and has served in various leadership positions at the chapter and global levels, including the Vice President of Certification and Education on the PMI Atlanta Board, Director of Certification on the PMI Global Board, and a Member of the PMI Global Certification Governance Council.

Leah Paras, PMP Leah Paras has over 20 years of first-hand experience in project management and quality improvement. Her experience spans the areas of data processing, project management, quality initiatives, and education. Leah has provided consultation and training to diverse organizations including banking, telecommunications, information systems, insurance, military, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, railroads, and not-for-profit. Mrs. Paras is a PMI-certified Project Management Professional (PMP). She was a founding member of the Austin PMI Chapter and is also a long-standing member of the Society for the Advancement of Management. Leah is a senior associate with J.J. Glatt & Associates.

FACULTY PROFILES

Joe Glatt, CCP, PMP Joe Glatt has developed and performed training programs, seminars, symposium speaking, and consulting services for over 16,500 employees of major firms throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Joe has over 28 years of experience in emerging technologies and project management. He has provided training and consultation to organizations in telecommunications, information systems, pharmaceuticals, finance, and manufacturing environments. Mr. Glatt is PMI-certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and has earned the highly respected Certificate in Data Processing from the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals. Joe has served as a Board member and advisor to the New Jersey chapter of PMI, one of the largest chapters in the world. He is the President and Founder of J.J. Glatt & Associates.


The Project Management Leadership Program is an eight-day certificate program offered in two four-day modules scheduled for Monday through Thursday, April 27-30, 2009 (Module I) and Monday through Thursday, May 18-21, 2009 (Module II). The program will be held at the Georgia Tech College of Management located in Midtown Atlanta, 800 West Peachtree Street NW. The course fee is $6,500 per person and includes Georgia Tech instructional fees, program binders and materials, case studies, simulation licensing fees, lunch at the Georgia Tech Hotel executive dining room, morning and afternoon refreshments, parking, and Internet access.
