“I thoroughly enjoyed each seminar offered for the certificate series. Each course was informative and useful. I have highly recommended this course to my colleagues.” Frank Costanzo PF Labs Manager Production Operations

Technology. Efficiency. Innovation. Speed.Today’s business world is driven by these words. Organizations need to use technology to streamline and innovate processes and deliver more value to customers faster.

This creates new demands for leaders and professionals like you. To help you meet these challenges, the Rutgers University Center for Continuing Professional Development has created three Critical Skills Certification Programs:

4 Process Improvement4 Business Analysis4 Project ManagementBusiness processes are the collections of activities that generate value for your organization and create strategic differentiation. Managing and improving these processes is the key to success. When a process has reached its full potential, a new design or new technology is needed to enable breakthrough performance. Business analysis is the critical skill set to shape and implement new business capabilities. Finally, any process improvement or new technology is implemented via critical projects. Managing these projects properly ensures that business results and return on investment are achieved.

Process improvement, business analysis and project management are the three critical skill sets for today’s managers and professionals.

Critical Skills SeriesEach discipline is complex and has many knowledge areas. Rutgers has distilled the most important skills from each discipline into a three-seminar Critical Skills Series. Each of these series is practical in nature and compliant with accepted Body of Knowledge standards (from PMI and IIBA). The intent is not to cover the entire body of knowledge but to give the real-world practitioner essential skills that he or she will use every day.

Certification OptionEach series requires participation in three seminars. (See the following page for specifics.) If you choose a certification option, you will receive a pre-Series multiple-choice test. This test will establish a baseline. After each seminar, you will also receive a multiple-choice test so you can self-assess your progress. After the third module in the selected series, you will receive a comprehensive case study. This case study will require you to apply a wide variety of skills taught in these seminars. You will have one month to complete and return the case study.

Candidates who successfully complete the case study will earn certification and receive a special certificate from the Rutgers University Division of Continuous Education and Outreach. The fee for each certification process is $795.

Process MappingHow to Streamline and Reengineer Business ProcessesYour organization is a collection of processes. These processes are the natural business activities you perform that produce value, serve customers and generate income. Managing these processes is key to the success of your organization.

Unfortunately, most organizations – perhaps yours – are not set up to manage processes. Instead, they manage tasks. Think about it. Isn’t your organization built around functions – manufacturing department, the radiol-ogy department, the sales department, the customer service department?

As a result, people tend to focus on “local” concerns instead of the “global” needs of process customers. Subprocesses evolve within departments, without consideration of other functional areas. Layers of communication and management are created to ensure desired outcomes, thereby adding to costs and lengthening cycle and customer response times. Inefficiency and waste become part of the system. They rob your organization of profits, productivity and its competitive advantage. But, there is a way out.

Process mapping is a simple yet powerful method of looking beyond functional activities and rediscovering your core processes. Process maps enable you to peel away the complexity of your organizational structure (and internal politics) and focus on the processes that are truly the heart of your business. Arm yourself with a thorough understanding of the inputs, outputs and interrelationships of each process.

Properly used, process maps can change your entire approach to process improvement and business management. Plus, they will greatly reduce the cost of your operations by eliminating as many as 50% of the steps in most processes as well as identifying the root causes of systemic quality problems.

Program Benefits...What You Will Learn:• Understand how your processes interact in a system• Locate process flaws that are creating systemic problems• Evaluate which activities add value for your customer• Identify the processes that need to be redesigned• Construct and analyze process flow charts

Who Will Benefit:• Process Manager, Process Owner, Process Leader,

Project Manager or Functional Manager• Process Improvement Team Leader• Manager in a Process Oriented Organization• Senior Manager or Executive

Process Improvement Critical Skills Certification Program

Improve performance and customer satisfactionThe business concept of “process” is not new. But as the twenty-first century begins, mastering “process” has become imperative for companies in all sectors. Why? Because the new challenge of process management is not only to achieve operational excellence (superior quality, speed, and efficiency) but also to leverage distinctive process capabilities to create new customer value.

The combination of technical skills, people skills and strategic creativity needed to meet this challenge is not common. The Process Improvement Critical Skills Certification Program is your first step toward developing these competencies that are so critical to the success of your organization…and your career. This program is comprised of three two-day seminars plus an optional certification process. The curriculum addresses the subset of Malcolm Baldrige Process Management criteria that is most vital to your process improvement efforts.

Measuring & Improving ProcessesMoving Toward Six Sigma Performance Six Sigma performance is a worthy business goal. However, the investment required to train Green Belts and Black Belts is significant, as is the cultural shift that may be needed to embrace advanced statistical methods.

Fortunately, it is not an all-or nothing proposition for your organization. You can begin the journey simply by enhancing current process improvement techniques.

Improving processes begins with the customer, be it internal or external. Understanding which customers and which requirements are most critical to your business determines which processes should be improved. Before relying on advanced Six Sigma techniques, significant process learning can be achieved using tools such as trend charts, Pareto charts, histograms and fishbone diagrams.

Measuring and Improving Processes provides a complete toolkit for managers and quality/process professionals to document, measure, analyze and improve the way your organization delivers value to its internal and external customers.

Program Benefits...What You Will Learn:• Measure and analyze process performance• Determine what level of quality your process

is capable of delivering• Recognize trends in performance• Identify the factors that limit quality, slow service time

and increase costs• Understand variability and how it drives your

improvement tactics• Evaluate and apply process improvement alternatives• Develop results-oriented solutions that will yield

improved business results

Who Will Benefit:• Manager of Administration, Operations or Manufacturing• Process Owner, Manager or Analyst• Functional or Project Manager• Director/Coordinator of ISO, TQM, CQI or Six Sigma• Member of a Process Improvement Team• Anyone Actively Involved in Your Organization’s Process

or Quality Improvement Efforts

Making Processes ProfitableHow to Maximize Value Generation and Reduce CostsBusiness processes are the collection of activities that create value. According to strategy authority Michael Porter, these activities are the ultimate source of competitive advantage.

“There are just two types of competitive advantage…Cost advantage arises because a firm can cumulatively perform the discrete activities in a business more efficiently. Differentiation depends instead on a firm’s ability to perform particular activities in unique ways that create buyer value.”

Making Processes Profitable enables you to pursue both paths.

Increasing Customer valueThe business process (or value chain) is the engine that produces value in the form of products or services a customer will pay for. Effective process improvement must begin with a thorough understanding of who the customer is and how he or she defines value, lest we create a more efficient system for “garbage in, garbage out.” Making Processes Profitable provides the customer value focus your process improvement efforts need.

Increasing Process EfficiencyOn average 20% of all manufacturing process costs and 30% of all service process costs are attributable to non-value-added activities. Making Processes Profitable will help you find and quantify those wasteful activities. Once you have eliminated those activities, you can use techniques taught in this seminar to manage and control ongoing process costs.

Making Processes Profitable is a valuable two-day investment for operations and financial professionals alike.

Program Benefits...What You Will Learn:• Reduce costs without sacrificing customer satisfaction• Establish an activity costing system to manage process costs• Gain competitive advantage by reducing cycle time• Develop better financial and non-financial performance measures

Who Will Benefit:• Director/Manager of Operations, Administration

or Manufacturing• Process Manager or Engineer• CFO, Controller or Manager of Finance• Director of Quality• Member of a Process Improvement Team

Building Effective Business RequirementsEssentials of Business RequirementsHow important are effective business requirements? Studies have shown that at least half of product defects originate in the requirements. As much as 80 percent of rework on a development project can be traced back to requirement defects.

In today’s environment, where every system dollar is scrutinized and squeezed, one of the greatest improvement opportunities for an IT organization is in defining the requirements correctly.

Regardless of the development methodology, business requirements must clearly define what the system is supposed to do. This seminar addresses a broad range of business analysis skills that will help you extract the right information from the business users and create requirements to support the design, development, testing, and deployment of successful system solutions.

Program Benefits...What You Will Learn:• The business analysts’ role in requirements gathering• Analyze business processes to determine

business requirements• Harvest business need information from the

user community effectively• Create thorough and useful business requirements• Use case and modeling techniques that

can help hone requirements• Integrate business requirements into a variety

of system development methodologies• Establish a traceability protocol to link business requirements

to design, development, testing, and deployment activities• Link requirements to business needs

Who Will Benefit:• System Analyst and/or Manager• Business Analyst and/or Manager• Technical and QA Analyst• Operations Manager• IT Manager• Project and Development Manager• Requirements and Design Engineer

Strategic Project Management*How To Select High-Impact Projects and Deliver Mission-Critical ResultsA successful project happens because of four distinct components. First, it was the right project. Second, the organization broadly supported it. Third, the project was well-defined and planned. Finally, it was executed well.

The initial selection process determines whether the proposed project deliverable aligns with the organization’s vision, profitability and competitiveness. The project execution process reflects the organization-wide project management competency…how well it executes all projects in a repeatable, predictable, and sustainable manner. To do this requires the mastery of a full range of project management skills.

Program Benefits...What You Will Learn:• Understand how strategic plans will affect project selection• Select the high-impact projects and abandon low-return projects• Apply Project Management Institute’s (PMI®) Organizational

Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®) to your organization

• Establish an organization-wide project management discipline• Understand the project management life cycle and phases• Apply tools to effectively and thoroughly plan the project• Master the essential project management skills• Perform mid-stream evaluation to decide whether project

funding should continue• Monitor and communicate project progress at a strategic level• Manage multiple projects• Identify and track quality and project metrics• Bring projects to closure• Create a learning organization for sustainable, strategic results

Controlling Project Risks & CostsLearn To Stay Within Budget While Responding To Unplanned EventsA critical part of Project Management is the ability to control costs even when uncertainty prevails. The tight connection between cost and risk forces the Project Manager to plan and respond decisively. Any failure to appropriately respond to risks can make the project over budget, behind schedule, or mired in litigation. With effective use of cost and risk management process, a Project Manager can deliver project objectives, even in a severely constrained environment.

In this seminar, you will gain a practical understanding of Project Management’s “Project Cost Management” and “Project Risk Management” knowledge areas of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) - Third Edition. Participants will learn how to use the Earned Value Management (EVM) to measure and control project progress.

Program Benefits...What You Will Learn:• Create a cost management plan • Develop a cost baseline and control account plan (CAP)• Apply the earned value management (EVM) technique• Establish estimate at completion• Identify risks• Analyze risks qualitatively and quantitatively• Develop a risk response plan• Manage a contract-based project• Measure schedule and cost performance• Know what, when and how to take a corrective action
