Project: ADAPCO banner stands

I created many of these with ADAPCO’s market-ing manager, this being one of the ones I worked on toward the end of my time at Bayer. I was able to help them develop their identity over time and influenced them greatly in the use of more inter-esting graphic elements, such as silhouetted images instead of block photos, using some gradients and abstract elements to create a more interesting im-age and better feature the products.

Project: ADAPCO ACMA booth

At left is a photo of a Hollywood-themed trade display that I conceptualized wtih the manager and created the graphics for. Walk-of-fame stars, side banners, and a large photo backdrop where the client’s customers could have their photo tak-en “Hollywood Paparazzi” style made the event fun for the team running the booth and most importantly, for their customers.

I also did a great deal of direct mail work for ADAPCO (they were a client through Bayer) but those were very simple and standard looking pieces, at the company’s request. I did some direct mail for Bayer but that was mostly prepping existing templates and getting things through the press.

Project: 2010 World Environment Poster

This is a piece that inspired a great deal of requests to our department for more “environmentally friendly” looking design. The posters themselves were produced on %100 PCW recycled stock, using soy-based inks.

These were not the typical corporate piece and were requested by our Communications people to use to get the word out around the city about the activities and events surrounding WED which was hosted in Pittsburgh that year. It is a piece that was widely recognized, and gained an hallowed spot in our CEO’s office.

The type is all hand-rendered (I use a Wacom Intu-ous 2 tablet which is yes a little outdated but still performs admirably for its age), the photos are stock from iStock.com. The WED logo I cannot lay claim to, though I wish I could.

Project: Wedding Materials

Some of our clientele were other Bayer employ-ees, and I was often recruited to create invitations, especially custom work. We had a client come in once with some colors and a theme in mind and I was handed the project. It was high-profile work within the company (no pressure); a wedding suite of design work on-demand for the daughter of our CEO’s admin.

The girl and her mother were very sweet and enthusiastic, but had many requests that I had to juggle in with other work, right up to the last minute. I have included here three initial ideas that I had for the design scheme, which I presented to her in the form of her “Save the Date” cards. She was interested in using variations of teal, and black and white for her colors, and wanted to incorporate a peacock feather motif in with the design.

I went with three routes on the feather motif - one was very obvious, one was very abstract and one was simply using feathery elements, the kinds of lines that came to mind when I combined the idea of feathers and “fancy wedding design” in my head. She chose the top layout.

Project: American Coatings Society invitation

Cover for an invitation to a client-only event host-ed by Bayer. This was simple but impactful enough that they decided to run with it for an e-blast graphic as well.

Project: BB King event Invite

Another client-only event invitation, this time to BB King concert (I was so jealous!). They wanted it to hearken back to how the older posters would have been done up, the kinds that advertised BB in his heyday, thus the simple shapes, two-tone design and deco-style type in the text.

I had to work within the confines of creating an email-friendly PDF that could be legible on-screen at its original size (which is somewhat larger than at left). This also had to be approved by BB’s own advertising team, which I am happy to say it was.

Project: CAUSE film festival work

To the left are the front and back of the DVD insert for the 2008 CAUSE film festival. To the right is the DVD label (minus the border ring). I was given this project all four years at Bayer to work on and it was a pleasure and an exercise in creativity in keeping with a theme and set of information but creating a new look every year for the event. It is one of the projects that I will really miss working on at Bayer.

I am showing you these samples as examples of creative typesetting and work with graphics in different formats. Below is a thumbnail of the inside of the program that was passed out at the event (in print form it folded in half down the vertical axis).

2008 was also the year that CAUSE was awarded “Best in Show” at the Golden Triangle awards. Below is the DVD label for the 2009 competition and the poster for the 2010 competition.

Project: Olamide-Onakoya Wedding Seating Chart

This was a really wonderful project that started with our client coming in with a request for an innovative seating chart and ending with us doing much of the other print work associated with the wedding. I am featuring here for a variety of reasons - I want KK to know that I have an under-standing and appreciation for different materials and colors, arrangements and styles. This project was a synthesis of 2 and 3-d design where I had to create the 2-d chart with the thought in mind that we would be adding 3-d elements (the flowers) later on. The idea was that at each table, there was a theme flower; Ola wanted her guests to be able to identify which table listing was theirs by look-ing at a live flower sample from the bouquet style that would be at their table. The feedback we got after the wedding was nothing but positive. You will notice of course that the flowers in these pho-tos are synthetic and repetitive; this was merely a test setup before shipping off the final product.

Project: Sample Explorer poster for IDSA

The goal of this project was to create a large- format graphic with a visual hyperbole of the web site that BMS was in the process of launching, the Sample Explorer site. I used oversized everything in the graphics and created a “floating” look to give the viewer the impression that the web site had “exploded” into a life-size, interactive experience. I took macro photos of the products to be featured, with careful attention to the textures of each and how they played with light, to capture the most intriguing imagery possible. It was very well received at the show and by their marketing folks, to the point of being featured in an internal publication at Bayer MaterialScience.
