Project Duration-1March 2006 to 28th Feb 2007

Report for the period -1March 2006 to 31 August 2006

IntroductionThis project is an initiative of ABHAS for developing a sustainable integrated education module (education, vocation and life skills), which will contribute towards promoting Girls education and hence the reduction of gender disparity in education, especially in urban slums. The program will is helping in developing the skills and confidence of adolescent girls and their mothers to participate in the development of their community and demand for their rights through community participation.

Program Activities under TEACHABHAS received a grant from ASHA Stanford for the second consecutive year in March 2006 to implement the TEACH Program in Tughlaqabad village. The following activities are being conducted under the program.

1. Linking dropouts Girls with NIOS

Ist Batch Progress report

As in the past year a test was conducted to gauge the learning levels of the Girls and then they were divided into classes accordingly. The classes began on 15th April 2005, and of the 27 girls enrolled under the program, 16 girls appeared for class 10th, 2 for class 12th, 4 for class 6th and 5 for class 8th exams through the National Open School in the month of March 2006.

A teacher with the requisite qualification, appointed by ABHAS has been coaching these girls, teaching them according to their syllabus. She also conducted weekly and monthly tests and maintained progress record registers. Every month, the progress of the girls was discussed through a parents - teachers meeting which also helped in raising their involvement in the program. Daily attendance registers, lesson and activity plans and daily progress record and registers were maintained to monitor the progress of the girls.

In the month of March the first batch of NIOS girls prepared to give their final exams. The girl were very worried about their exams. We therefore took some sessions on how to cope with exams stress,

helped them to develop the timetable and how they have to prepare for their exams. The girls had also solved the model papers of previous exams with the help of the teacher who also tested the preparation of girls for the exams.

The girls of class 10th and 12th appeared for Basic English, Hindi, Social Science, Home Science, Economics while girls in class 6th and 8th

appeared for General science, Maths , English, Hindi and Social Studies.

It is heartening to know that despite the long gaps in their education ,more than 60% of the girls enrolled have been able to clear the exam in the first attempt. The remaining girls will reappear in one subject and ABHAS is making all efforts to give them the all academic support.

These girls will give their exam in October 2007. They come to the center regularly to take help from the tutor for in their subject.

During the summer vacations these girls joined ABHAS computer lab to acquire basic skills.

IInd BatchThe program is supporting the education of 25 drop out as well as economically backward girls by helping them with their education expenses. This year too more than 50 girls had requested to be enrolled under the programThough the program is well known in the community, information was given about the NIOS bridge course program in the community through community mobilizers, who also followed up with those girls who had come to enquire about the program earlier. Forms were given out to girls who were dropouts and had lost out on educational opportunities. Among many applicants, girls who wanted to continue their education were selected on the following criteria.

Be a resident of Tughlakabad. Given preference to the elder girls from the family. First generation learner. There is no working hand in the family.

Many more girls are keen to enroll themselves in the courses at the centre since many girls who do not have the proper school pass certificates they are presently not able to register under NIOS. These girls have taken admission in our vocational training class and we are also trying to find out ways in which we can help them to continue their education.

Selection Test for NIOS

A test was conducted to know the learning levels of the Girls and then they were divided into classes accordingly and their classes began on 15th April 2005. 29 girls have been enrolled under the program at ABHAS center.19 girls will appear for class 10th, 2 for class 12th, 4 for class 6th and 4 for class 8th exams through the National Open School in the month of March 2007.

The N.I.O.S. instructor is coaching these girls and progressively covering the syllabus of first mid term exam. She also conducts weekly and monthly tests and maintains progress record registers.

After each monthly test a parent teacher meeting is held to discuss the progress of the girls and also to raise their involvement in the program.50% syllabus has been covered for all classes. Girls of class 10th and 12th

It is encouraging to see the response of the community in the program and most of the girls are between the ages of 14 to 19 years. Usually girls complete their household chores before coming to the class, which is held from 10 A.M to 2 P.M. Most girls and their mothers supplement family income through home-based work of quilt making, embroidery and sequin work for export houses. After interaction with girls we found that alcoholism, violence against girls in school, discrimination and poverty were the main reasons for dropping out.

Meeting with Parents and Girls

A meeting was held in the first week of August to discuss about their problems at home as well as in their studies. Some of the girls have no time for their studies at home because they have to help their mothers at home for completion of house hold chores, and some even work to supplement the family income. The parents were therefore requested to take interest in their daughters education and were also sensitized against gender discrimination in the family.

2. Coaching Classes for School Going Girls

We observed that many girls drop out from schools because they are unable to cope with studies due to lack of academic guidance. Last year under the project ABHAS identified school going girls who needed coaching. ABHAS tutors visited the schools and houses in the area to select deserving and needy girls.

One groups of 25 girls received coaching at girls’ interest center in the community. Girls of

classes 1 to VII of MCD and government schools attended these coaching classes. The regular guidance, individual attention and monitoring through weekly tests helped us to get 100% results as all girls passed their classes, and moved on to the next class.

The brighter girls were grouped with those weak in studies and they were given the responsibility of helping them out. This arrangement has worked out well and many girls are motivated. Home visits were made repeatedly to those girls who were not regular to the tuition class. The main reasons were illness at home and household chores.

Child Rights workshop

ABHAS has been successful in creating a network with organizations like India Alliance for the child rights. A three-day child rights training workshop was organized by ABHAS at Gandhi Smiriti. Ten girls from Vocational training program also participated with other children belonging to different projects of the ABHAS. The children were encouraged to share their issues and concerns about “Me and My Rights”. The workshop helped them develop the understanding about various issues related to children’s rights, duties and responsibilities.
