ADMISSION

Application for admission

It is advisable that applications for admission to study at the Cape Peninsula University ofTechnology (CPUT) be submitted as early as possible to:The Registrar

Course information and an electronic application form (to be printed and completed bythe applicant) are available on our web site: www.cput.ac.za

Closing dates

The closing date for applications for admission is 30 September and 31 October for late

application for local prospective students. Applicants will be informed of acceptance/non-

acceptance after 31 October.

No late applications from international students will be accepted.

A late application fee shall be payable for applications received after 30 September.

The closing date for the submission of design portfolios is 31 July.

Submission of certificates

A Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification must be submitted by the student uponenrolment at the beginning of the academic year. If this requirement is not met, theUniversity will be forced to cancel the provisional acceptance.

Evaluation of foreign qualifications

Applicants who do not have a South African qualification are required to send theirresults/qualifications to the South African Qualifications Authority in order to have themevaluated and equated to a South African qualification.

Applications for such evaluations should include:

All qualification documents, i.e. the highest school certificate issued by the official exam-ining body; complete and legible transcripts of academic records in respect of all degreesor other higher education qualifications, together with the final certificates; precedingqualifications leading to any postgraduate/other advanced qualification when the latter issubmitted.

Certificates in foreign languages should be submitted together with translations intoEnglish by a sworn translator.

The relevant evaluation fee can be obtained from the South African QualificationsAuthority in Pretoria.

In addition to the above, the candidate also has to apply to the SA Trade Representativeclosest to his/her home for a study permit if the candidate is not a South African citizen.

Residences

Residence accommodation is subject to availability, in terms of the rules, and will be allo-cated at the campus where the student will be studying. Residence accommodation isavailable to full-time students only. Students who are not awarded a place in a residenceshould arrange for alternative accommodation before arriving in Cape Town.

Medium of tuition1. The medium of tuition is English, except for the Education courses at the Wellington

Campus which are offered in Afrikaans. 2. Afrikaans and Xhosa speaking students may be offered support, which may be by way

of language-specific tutorial groups, the provision of notes and the setting of tests,assignments and examinations in the first language of the student.

Fees

• Course fees vary, are reviewed annually and are subject to change. A class feesbrochure is available on application from the faculty offices. Examination fees are includ-ed in the class fees.

• Fees are payable in advance and are not refundable.

• Application fee: R100,00.• Late application fee: R150.00.

• Fee payable on provisional acceptance: R1 250.00

• Fee payable within two weeks of confirmation of acceptance of first year students:R450.00. A total of R1 700.00 will be credited to the account of the student. Should thestudent fail to take up his/her place this amount will not be refunded.

• Fee payable on registration in January: R3 500,00. Balance of fees to be paid in twoinstalments by 28 February and 31 August, or in 10 monthly instalments, February toNovember.

• Discount: A discount of 5% will be granted if payment in full is received for annual feesbefore 14 February, and 2.5% for first semester fees paid in full before 14 February.Second semester fees received before 14 August qualify for a discount of 2.5%.

• International Students: At registration, all foreign students (including students fromAfrican countries other than South Africa), must pay R1 400 plus an upfront payment of50% of the anticipated fees for the year; the balance of the fees for the year must be

paid by 31 May of the year of study.

In addition to their course fees, students should budget for accommodation costs (hos-tel accommodation is also payable in advance), books and pocket money.

Financial aid

Various bursaries, merit awards and loans are available. Further information may beobtained from the Financial Aid Offices on the Bellville and Cape Town Campuses.

International students

International students should consult the International Student Guide (or visit our website: www.cput.ac.za) for details regarding their application to study at the University, e.g.study permit, fees structure, etc.

CONSOLIDATION OF FACULTIES

Over the next three years (2013–2015):

1. The Faculty of Applied Sciences will be consolidated on the Bellville Campus.

2. The Faculty of Business will be consolidated on the Cape Town Campus.

4. The Faculty of Informatics and Design will be consolidated on the Cape TownCampus.

5. The Faculty of Health and Wellness Sciences will be consolidated on the BellvilleCampus while retaining a presence at the Western Cape College of Nursing inAthlone, Groote Schuur Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital, and in Worcester.

Prospective students will be notified before registration and, in some instances, pipelinestudents will complete their qualification on the campus of first registration.

QUALIFICAtIon stRUCtURes

National Diploma, BTech, MTech and DTech

Three years full-time study leads to the award of a National Diploma. National Diplomastudies constitute complete study programmes, meet specific business needs and serveas recognised exit levels.

The National Diploma leads to the Baccalaureus in Technology (BTech) or to a NationalHigher Diploma (NHD). Admission to these one-year programmes (full time) may be sub-ject to additional minimum admission requirements, which may include a minimum passmark in the third year of the National Diploma programme. Most BTech and NHD pro-grammes are also offered part time over two years.

Advanced qualifications (Masters degree and Doctorate in Technology) may be obtainedthrough full-time or part-time study.

Bachelor degrees

Four years full-time study leads to the award of a Bachelor degree (e.g. in EmergencyMedical Care, Medical Laboratory Science, etc).

Baccalaureus Educationis, BEd (Honours), MEd and DEd

Four years full-time study leads to the award of the Bachelor degree in Education (BEd).

The BEd degree leads to the BEd Honours. Admission to this one-year programme (fulltime) may be subject to additional minimum admission requirements. Most BEd Honoursprogrammes are also offered part time over two years.

Advanced qualifications (Master’s degree and Doctorate) may be obtained through full-time or part-time study.

MInIMUM ADMIssIon ReQUIReMents: 2013As from January 2013 the following minimum admission requirements shall apply inrespect of:

1. ALL NATIONAL HIGHER CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA COURSESA National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi (or equivalent) with an achieve-ment rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement: 40-49%) or better in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects, an achievement rating of 2 for Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, anachievement rating of 3 in the required official language at Home Language level and anachievement rating of 2 in the other required language on at least First AdditionalLanguage level; one of these languages shall be English or Afrikaans.

Specific minimum requirements for a course (subjects required/recommended,achievement rating, portfolio to be submitted, interview in Cape Town, evaluationtests, or experience required) apply to each course. Please check under the rele-vant faculty.

Applicants may be required to write additional proficiency tests as part of the admissionrequirements for certificate, diploma and degree programmes.

Design courses: Requirements

All design and architecture course applicants must complete a questionnaire/additionalapplication form, submit a portfolio of prescribed work and an essay, attend a selectionprocedure, and/or attend a drawing test on campus. Applicants may be required toattend an interview on campus, an English language proficiency test, a motivational andinterest test, or an on-campus practical test of a career-specific nature.
