PROGRAMME & SCHEDULESCINEKID FOR PROFESSIONALS 2015

THE FUTUREIS NOW!

Page 2: Programme & Schedules Cinekid for Professionals 2015

The children’s media industry is changing rapidly. We can’t predict the future, but we can analyse and act on all developments, and take a critical look at current trends. And most importantly we can get to know the audience - media savvy children that always seem to be one step ahead. That’s exactly what we will be doing at Cinekid for Professionals 2015.

The Future is Now!Children are completely immersed in media. As we’ve seen over the past decade future trends become the new reality within a very short period of time. How to remain relevant, and how to prepare for change within finance, content and execu-tion, is much debated. The speed at which children’s media consumption patterns are changing, and how the latest technological developments unfold on all levels, makes this a highly urgent and important topic for examination and debate during the Cinekid for Professionals Conference.

However, we also want to offer a sober assessment of all the latest developments in the field. Is VR going to be the basis of the new popular gaming console - or indeed of our future cinematic experience? Popular platforms such as YouTube and Netflix are constantly evolving, but which way are they heading?

Is traditional linear TV really dying? What must national broadcasters do to remain relevant in the face of new and emerging global trends? What are the innovations that will impact current and future audiovisual works and how can we successfully embrace them?

Tools for the future nowProfessionals who don’t keep up with today’s developments, such as contem- porary transmedia practices, will be lost in the face of tomorrow’s new developments. To strengthen the audiovisual industry, it is essential therefore that we continually share knowledge and keep our sector professionals well informed and updated, and to encourage open-minded and realistic awareness of possibilities and demands. The latest developments require acute adjustments to the traditional methods of production and distribution on a creative, financial and executive level. The CfP conference, seminar & master-class programme will provide the ammu-nition to help professionals within the children’s media industry remain robust, well-informed and competitive.

only: fee €60, Check website for availability

Get your hands dirty, get taught by new media experts and experience the artistic new media research practice first-hand in multidisciplinary teams during one of four Technological Imaginary Master-classes. Moderator: Opeyemi Olukemi

1. SOCIAL HACKING by Kyle McDonald and Lauren McCarthy In this masterclass we will be looking at how structures and systems of social interactions, identity and self-representa-tion can be de-/re-constructed through technology. Kyle and Lauren will work on expanding people’s ideas about interaction and how they can use new platforms and technologies to affect interactions.

2. PLAY by Zuraida Buter & Adriaan de Jongh“Gaming” is generally seen as an addictive and brain-numbing first person shooter exercise played on your pc or smart phone. However, the related term “playing” has a more traditional connotation, related to physical and communal spaces which can stimulate the imagination. In this session, digital gaming will be connected to a more physical form of play in order to foster creativity and design.

3. RESPONSIVE MEMORIES WITH TOUCHBOARD by School of Machines, Making & Make-believe & Bare Conductive Coaches Matt Johnson (Bare Conductive) and Rachel Uwa (School of MA) will work with the participants on linking self-reflec-tion, personal memories, and interactivity in the physical space using Touchboard technology, a piece of hardware that can change the world around you by turning almost any material or surface into a sen-sor. Based on assignments, participants will embody their memories and arrive prepared to create a combined interactive and (musical) memory collage.

4. MINECRAFT by Adam ClarkeWhat is the magic of Minecraft? Why is Minecraft the preferred place to be, play and build in for more than 70 million users across the world, most of them children? What makes this surreal space so authentic for its audience? In this Masterclass partici- pants are invited to have a go, and to play and build under the watchful eye of coach Adam Clarke and his online collaborators.

The Netherlands is a global leader in creating live action drama for children and has a strong basis in animation. Both disciplines are very successful and win prizes at home and abroad. The success of live action drama for youth is, among other things, based on a long tradition of developing quality scripts for children. There are specific rules for drama and storytelling that apply to writing for young audiences. And there are many talented and successful animators in the Netherlands whose scripts are developed primarily using the power of the image - but often not specifically written for, or focussed on, young audiences.

The Masterclass Children’s Animation will therefore provide an exchange of knowledge and skills between live action scriptwriters and animators. The question central to this session: how can you write a good story for children while keeping the power of the image alive? The masterclass offers inspiration and know-how about writing scripts for children’s animation for both live action filmmakers and animators (writers and directors).
