WELCOME TO AUTUMN TERM AT THE ACADEMY
This term we are releasing our diary of events in two parts, with this first part covering September and October.
For the time being, we are continuing to livestream our fantastic student performances, free of charge, via our YouTube channel. We are, however, very much hoping that from 1 November we will be able to start welcoming audiences back into the building.
In addition to the varied programme of concerts and events you will see in the pages that follow, students participate in masterclasses with inspirational visiting professors and guest artists. Page 18 of this diary gives some insight into the remarkable calibre of the people who
help our students develop their individual and collective excellence.
This term our 200 PIECES project, which is part of our Bicentenary celebrations, includes world premieres by George Benjamin and Michael Berkeley; and, coming up in Part 2 of the diary, Brett Dean and Gwilym Simcock.
As we enter our third century, we have never been more confident in our ability to shape the future of music.
I remain grateful for your support and very much hope to be able to see some of you in the Academy very soon. To be among the first to receive the news about our return to in-person events, sign up to our mailing list.

Lorenza Borrani, Visiting Professor of Chamber Orchestras, returns to the Academy to direct this solemn programme. Mozart’s Maurerische Trauermusik was written for the funeral of two of the composer’s fellow Viennese Freemasons. Schubert’s stormy ‘Tragic’ Symphony, written when he was just 19, exhibits the emotional range and maturity of the young composer.

BACH THE EUROPEAN: MUSIC FOR THE HIMMELSBURG LIVESTREAMED FROM THE DUKE’S HALL
Rachel Podger directorOphélia Amar organ
JS Bach Komm, du süße Todesstunde, BWV 161; Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565; Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV 182
This concert presents works written by Bach for the Weimar court chapel, known as the Himmelsburg (‘The Castle of Heaven’), during the second decade of the 18th century. The Toccata and Fugue in D minor, arguably the most famous piece in the organ repertoire, is sandwiched between two cantatas written especially for the palace church.Himmelskönig, sei willkommen was performed on Palm Sunday in 1714 and is considered the first of Bach’s Weimar cantatas; Komm, du süße Todesstunde was composed just two years later. Tragically, the musicians’ gallery at the Himmelsburg was destroyed by a fire in 1774, along with the organ Bach played during his time there.
