PROGRAM COURSE DESCRIPTION The Hemodialysis Training School offers three hundred twenty hours of theoretical and clinical training for those interested in becoming a Patient Care Technician in Hemodialysis. After completion of the course – which requires a “proficient” score in both the theory and clinical portion – the student will be certified by the California Department of Health Services (DHS) Licensing and Certification as a Patient Care Technician. The theory lectures – totaling eighty hours – include Orientation to the Dialysis Team; Basic Chemistry of Body Fluids and Electrolytes; Renal Physiology and Pathology of Renal Failure; Clinical Manifestations of End Stage Renal Disease; Laboratory Data: Analysis and Interpretation; Principles of Hemodialysis; Dialyzers, Dialysate and Delivery System; Access to the Bloodstream; Patient and Machine Monitoring and Assessment; Anticoagulation and Heparin Administration; Nutrition management; Acute Renal Failure and dialysis; Treatment Options; Diabetes and Hemodialysis; Infection Control; Blood borne Pathogen; Airborne Pathogen; Psychosocial Aspect of Hemodialysis; End Stage Renal Disease in the Elderly, Management of Quality in Dialysis Care; State and Federal Regulations Affecting the Delivery of Hemodialysis. The clinical lectures – totaling two hundred forty hours – include the typical tasks and clinical routines of a “working” dialysis clinic, conducted in a mock clinical lab. An HTS Preceptor supervises students in the clinical lab (Department of Health Services Licensing and Certification certified Patient Care Technician with five or more years of dialysis experience).  ADMISSION  REQUIREMENTS    ¶ MUST  be  a  legal  USA  resident  ¶ NO  outstanding  warrants  or  past  criminal  record  on  file.  ¶ Minimum  education  level:  High  School  ¶ Negative  drug  screening  results  ¶ Ability  to  read,  speak,  and  write  English.  ¶ A  minimum  score  of  75%  the  on  CBT/McGraw–Hill  entrance  

exam

 GRADUATION  REQUIREMENTS    In  order  to  receive  your  certification,  you  must  meet  the  following  criteria:  1. ALL  required  documents  must  be  submitted  for  your  student  

file.  2. MUST  complete  a  minimum  of  320  hours  of  training.  3. ALL  theoretical  exams  –  totaling  nine  (9)  module  quizzes  –  

must  have  a  minimum  score  of  85%.  4. ALL  clinical  exams  –  totaling  five  (5)  laboratory  quizzes  –  must  

have  a  minimum  score  of  85%.  5. The  Skills  Competency  Checklist  must  be  COMPLETED  and  

SIGNED.  6. The  Written  Final  Exam  must  have  a  minimum  score  of  75%.  7. The  Clinical  Final  Exam  must  receive  a  “Proficient”  score.  8. ALL  financial  responsibilities  must  be  met.    *  No  credits  are  accepted  or  transferred.

REGISTRATION    1. Make  an  appointment  with  the  branch  location  you  are  

interested  in  attending.  2. Complete  a  “Yes,  I  Wish  to  Apply”  form  –  available  on  location.  3. Provide  a  $275  registration  fee.  4. Complete  and  pass  –  passing  score  is  75%  or  higher  –  the  

school’s  qualifying  exam.  5. Produce  required  documents:  

a. proof  of  citizenship  b. high  school  diploma  

6. Pick  a  desired  start  date.  7. Fill  out  remaining  paperwork.  

REQUIRED  DOCUMENTS    ¯ Driver’s  License  /  State  ID  ¯ Police  Clearance  /  Police  Waiver  ¯ Status  of  Citizenship  (ie.  US  passport,  birth  certificate,  

naturalization  papers)  ¯ High  School  Diploma  or  GED  ¯ Social  Security  Card  ¯ CPR  Certification  (This  can  be  obtained  through  the  school.

CAMPUS  HOUSING    The  Hemodialysis  Training  School  is  currently  processing  admissions  for  the  Union  City  branch.    This  location  does  not  offer  housing  as  part  of  the  tuition  package.    If  necessary,  there  are  several  housing  facilities  nearby  where  students  can  stay  for  the  duration  of  the  course.    This  additional  expense  is  not  compensated  by  HTS  in  any  way.      CLASS  SCHEDULE    Theory  Classes:  8am-­‐4:30pm  (Saturdays  and  Sundays)  Clinical  Classes:  4am-­‐12:30pm  (taught  Tuesdays,  Thursdays,  and  Saturdays)              Ä ALL  theory  classes  are  MANDATORY  Ä 24  hours  a  week  minimum  is  required  for  clinical  classes.    *Check  with  administration  for  the  exact  dates  and  times  of  your  particular  class.  

PROGRAM  COSTS    ¯ $7500  tuition  -­‐-­‐  $275  of  which  is  due  upon  registration.  ¯ $50  drug  test  screening    *  Check  with  administration  for  any  available  installment  plans.
