A Message from the Program Director
When health inequity touches so many in our community here in Minnesota, nationally, and globally, it is particularly difficult to turn a blind eye. Being connected to Program in Health Disparities Research (PHDR) means you, as a community member, business partner, or researcher, have chosen to be a part of this community of health disparity fighters. You have chosen to use your resources to make a difference in the health of our community.
This dedication makes us a community that shares a vision of hope and determination. Hope that everyone will have access to quality, affordable, comprehensive health care services regardless of their socioeconomic status and a focused determination to eliminating health disparities.
The end of 2014 marks the end of the calendar year, but not the end of the challenge in addressing health disparities. Program in Health Disparities Research will continue to take on the challenge of eliminating health inequity in our communities. Please join us in the challenge to eliminate health disparities. Make a commitment today to improve the care and quality of life for everyone in our community.
Warm regards,
Kola Okuyemi, MD, MPHDirector, Program in Health Disparities Research

Health Equity Leadership and Mentoring
Effective mentoring is one of the most critical components of a successful academic career. The University of Minnesota Medical School’s Program in Health Disparities Research organizes and hosts a mentoring program, Health Equity Leadership and Mentoring (HELM), with the aim to enhance the academic excellence and leadership capacity of diverse faculty and health disparities researchers at the University of Minnesota and ultimately reduce health inequities. HELM focuses on some of the challenges scholars may face from minority, underserved groups and other faculty whose research is addressing health equity.

Cancer-Related Health Disparities Education and Career Development Program
The University of Minnesota Cancer-Related Health Disparities Education and Career Development Program is a joint training program in the Medical School and the School of Public Health for pre- and postdoctoral fellows committed to establishing careers in intervention research to reduce cancer-related disparities. This program, which began in September 2011 through a five-year grant from the National Cancer Institute, will train researchers to develop and evaluate interventions to reduce cancer-related inequities among disadvantaged populations in both clinical and population settings using a community-based participatory research framework. The program also intends to enhance the diversity of the research workforce in this area by recruiting individuals from underrepresented/disadvantaged populations.
