University of Saskatchewan 2 2001 Fall Convocation

The word “Convocation” arises from the Latin “con”meaning “together,” and “vocare” meaning “to call.”

Our Convocation ceremony is a calling together of thenew graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, symbolizing the historical practice of calling together allformer graduates. In currenttimes, the major functions ofConvocation are the election ofrepresentatives to Universitygoverning bodies and theadmission of candidates todegrees. The Chancellor, electedby convocation as its Chair, isthe highest official and spokes-person of the University.

The Convocation ceremonymarks the transition from therole of student to the holder of adegree with its accompanyingrights and privileges. Candidatesfor degrees, known asgraduands, having completedthe requirements of a course ofstudy, are recommended bycollege faculties and theUniversity Council to receivedegrees from the University ofSaskatchewan.

The ceremony, solemnized in the presence of theUniversity community and family and friends of thegraduands, consists of three parts: a procession markingthe leaving of the old status and entering the new; thePresident’s statement to the graduands, the Secretary’s

petition and the Chancellor’sconsent for their admission;followed by individual presentationby their Dean and admission by theChancellor to the degrees to whichthey are entitled. As graduates areadmitted to their degrees, agraduation hood, which has acolour symbolizing a particulardegree, is placed over eachgraduate’s head. A banner dis-playing the University crest is hungabove the stage, as a symbol of theUniversity’s authority to conferdegrees.

Following the conferring of degreesand acceptance of each graduate asa member of Convocation, areception is held – a celebration onthe occasion of the formal transitionfrom the role of learner to the roleof producer and contributor in thefield of the graduate’s choice.

We honour and welcome this year’s graduates!

History of the University of Saskatchewan

The University of Saskatchewan was established bythe University Act on April 3, 1907, only 18 monthsafter Saskatchewan became a province.

The people of the province, as well as theirgovernment, were instrumental in shaping the newUniversity. The provincial government requested allresidents who were graduates of a Canadian or Britishuniversity to form the first Convocation and elect theUniversity’s Senate. The Senate, in turn, elected fivemembers to the first Board of Governors, while theprovince appointed three. In 1908, the Board selectedProfessor Walter Charles Murray, of DalhousieUniversity, as the first President.

Classes in Arts and Science began in September, 1909,in downtown Saskatoon. Construction of the campusbegan in 1910 and the first buildings were occupiedin the fall of 1912. They included the College Building(Administration Building), Saskatchewan Hall (astudent residence), residences for the Dean ofAgriculture and the President, a laboratory forEngineering, and a number of farm buildings.

From the beginning, the University established anemphasis on research and teaching in a context ofcommunity service, and encouraged co-operationamong departments and divisions in tackling commonproblems. The development of rust-resistant strainsof wheat, for example, initiated by the University andfederal and provincial research agencies, has been ofuntold value to the prairie economy.

In 1909, the University had 70 students and 5professors, including the President. Today there areover 18,000 students studying in 13 colleges and 1school. This is the only university in Canada with fivehealth-science colleges and a major teaching hospitalon the same campus. The University offers Springand Summer Session, Evening Courses, IndependentStudies courses and Distance Education as well ason-campus daytime courses.

The University of Saskatchewan overlooks the SouthSaskatchewan River from a 755 hectare site. Thecampus consists of 147 hectares with the remainingbeing a research park, the University farm andexperimental plots.

Most early buildings on campus are Collegiate Gothicin style and are constructed in a local dolomite, popularly known as greystone. Subsequentlyconstructed buildings also have greystone, as wellas Tyndall stone (pre-cut slabs quarried in Tyndall,Manitoba), concrete, brick, glass and aggregatefacings.

The University offers many points of interest forvisitors: the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Museum ofNatural Sciences, Museum of Antiquities, BiologyMuseum, Pharmaceutical Museum, the Observatory, the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, the St. Thomas MoreGallery, Rugby Chapel, the Little Stone Schoolhouse, the Memorial Gates, Patterson Garden, and theKenderdine Gallery.

You are invited to visit our campus at any time!
