Recognising and setting trends –

from the leader in innovation and technology for valve terminals

2

Successful automation today

consists of three subject areas:

pneumatics, electrical engi-

neering and networking.

Only those who master these

areas and can easily combine

them from a single source

achieve the synergetic effects

which go beyond today’s

stand ards, and set trends

demanded by the tough

industrial competition.

As a leader in innovation and

technology in the area of valve

terminals, Festo also meets this

challenge when it comes to

fieldbuses, such as PROFIBUS

and PROFINET. Find out for

yourself on the following

pages!

There are five big trends which

Festo pursues with its pneu-

matics, electrical engineering

and networking concepts.

• Networking concepts –

a central prerequisite for

• installation

• function integration

• diagnostics

• energy efficiency

They are all ingredients for

successful automation. The

most important trend with

regard to industrial communi-

cation is undoubtedly the

networking concept. It directly

affects, to varying degrees, the

system and machine options –

regardless of whether it’s

about installation, function

integration, diagnostics or

energy efficiency.

Festo’s many years of

experience as a market and

technological leader for valve

terminals provide an answer to

the requirements demanded by

today’s and tomorrow’s

market. Reliable products in

Maximum productivity will be

greatly influenced by industrial

communication in the future. To

control and analyse individual

processes with high efficiency,

it is mandatory that the

communication levels, which

are still often separated today,

be networked, using, for

example, PROFIBUS and

PROFINET.

The “control technology

pyramid” shows the different

communication requirements

on each individual level.

The general advantages

The combination of PROFIBUS,

PROFINET and Ethernet:

overall, the most modern type

of automation with specific

advantages for each level.

Management level – holistic

communication all the way

to the office

Ethernet

• Remote diagnostics and

maintenance of controls and

devices from the office

network

• Networking applications

and machines

• Storage of process and

device information

• Use of Ethernet infrastructure

components (wireless LAN)

Control level – monitoring of

production and processes

Ethernet and PROFINET

• Changing device parameters

via the fieldbus network and

configuration tools

• Saving configurations and

parameters within PLC

projects

The communication components

PROFIBUS

A joint research project was

started by various companies

and institutes in Germany in

1987 with the aim of pro -

pagating a bit-serial fieldbus.

This was followed in 1993 by

the specification of a simpler

and significantly faster

protocol: PROFIBUS DP.

PROFIBUS DP is used to control

field devices with sensors and

actuators in manufacturing

technology via a central control

system. Central to this are the

many standard diagnostic

options and the connecting

“distributed intelligence”, that

is, networking multiple control

systems with one another.

Data rates of up to 12 Mbps

are possible on twisted two-

wire cables and/or fibre optic

cables.

With 25 million devices, the

PROFIBUS DP fieldbus

standard is the global market

leader in production auto -

mation.

PROFIBUS PA is used in

process technology to control

measuring devices by means of

a process control system. This

version is suitable for potential-

ly explosive areas in ex zones 0

and 1. The bus lines only

conduct a weak current,

ensuring an intrinsically safe

circuit so that even in the event

of a malfunction, no sparks

capable of producing an

explosion occur. PROFIBUS PA

typically has a slower data

transmission rate of 31.25

kbps.

Features:

• Line topology

• Device identification based

on HW addresses in slave

• Number of I/O devices

limited to 127

• Number of parameters

restricted to a max. of

242 bytes

PROFINET

Is the open Industrial Ethernet

standard from PROFIBUS &

PROFINET International (PI).

PROFINET uses TCP/IP and IT

standards, is real-time Ethernet-

capable and enables the

integration of fieldbus systems.

The concept is designed to be

modular so that users can

select their own functions.

These functions are essentially

differentiated by the type of

data exchange required to fulfil

the speed requirements.

At the centre of networking: PROFIBUS and PROFINET

In PROFINET, data is trans -

mitted at 100 Mbps based on a

typical Ethernet mechanism

with twisted pair cables or fibre

optic cables.

Features:

• Topology: line, star, tree

• Device identification based

on logical names and IP

addresses

• Number of I/O devices

limited to 255

• Unrestricted parameter

configuration

PROFIBUS – basic features

PROFIBUS distinguishes

between active stations such

as PLCs or PCs (which are

referred to as master devices)

and passive stations such as

sensors or actuators (which are

known as slave devices).

There are three different

options with regard to

transmission technology:

• RS-485 transfer for DP and

FMS with a two-wire cable

• IEC 1158-2 transfer for PA

• Fibre optic cable

Network topology

Linear bus, active bus terminal

at both ends.

Medium:

Screened, twisted cable.

Number of stations:

32 stations in each segment

without repeater.

Expandable up to 127 stations

with repeater.

Technical information: PROFIBUS and PROFINET

System design

The PROFIBUS network is

configured with the aid of

device description files and

the proprietary configuration

programs provided by the

device manufacturers.

The S7 range of controllers

from Siemens supports

configuration of Profibus DP

in the integrated hardware

configuration of the module in

the STEP 7 programming

software.

Festo valve terminals are

communicated to the hardware

catalogue simply by loading

the device description files and

corresponding bitmaps. Clearly

defined entries for the various

valve terminal modules enable

individual configurations to

be created by dragging and

dropping.

Festo valve terminals con -

figured with Siemens STEP 7

Festo valve terminals offer

intensive device-specific

diagnostics. The diagnostic

information is displayed in the

form of text entries in the

device description files when the

STEP 7 software is in online

mode. They help provide fast

and straightforward trouble -

shooting in the event of a

malfunction without the need

for additional programming.

Configuration

The properties of an IO device

are described in a GSD file

(Generic Station Description).

The language used here is

GSDML (GSD Mark-up

Language), an XML-based

language. In a development

environment, the GSD file

serves as the basis for planning

and configuring a Profinet IO

system. The GSDML for valve

terminals and the CPX terminal

contains all the information

needed for the configuration

and settings using a

configuration and programming

software, such as Siemens

STEP 7.

You can find the latest GSDML

file for the CPX terminal on

Festo’s website at:

www.festo.com/fieldbus

Installation guidelines

Regardless of the network-

structure, the extent of a

PROFINET segment must not

exceed 100 m at 100Base-TX.

Using switches and routers, a

network can be divided into

multiple segments. This makes

it possible to structure the

PROFINET network and create

larger network extensions. Valve

terminals and the CPX terminal

from Festo have integrated

switches, enabling the bus line

to be connected through them.

You can access installation

guidelines from the PROFINET

user organisation (PI):

www.profibus.com

PROFINET technology

PROFINET is essentially divided

into Profinet CBA and Profinet

IO:

• Profinet CBA (Component

Based Automation) is suit-

able for component-based

communication via TCP/IP.

• PROFINET IO was created for

real-time (RT) and synchro-

nous communication IRT

(IRT = Isochronous Real-

Time) with decentralised

peripherals.

Profinet CBA and Profinet IO

can communicate on the same

bus system at the same time.

Three different protocol levels

have been defined:

• TCP/IP for Profinet and

commissioning a system with

cycle times of around 100 ms

and acyclic communication

services

• RT for Profinet and Profinet

IO, cyclic I/O data exchange

in an application with 10 ms

cycle times

• IRT for Profinet IO, applica-

tions in drive technology with

cycle times of less than 1 ms

Profinet IO

Profinet IO describes all data

exchanges between controllers

(devices with “master

functions”) and the devices

(devices with “slave

functions”), as well as para -

meterisation and diagnostics.

Profinet IO is designed for fast

data exchange between

Ethernet-based field devices

and follows the provider/

consumer model. It is well

suited for data exchanges with

bus cycle times of a few ms.

Designing an IO system is

almost identical to designing a

PROFIBUS system in terms of

“look and feel”.
