Synopsis

I am currently working with a variety of local and international businesses through my company, Corporate Consigliere (www.corporate-consigliere.com). We work with companies, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations to articulate their strategic visions and then translate those visions into reality through people and processes. In addition to my work as an Adjunct Professor at Victoria University, I have taken on work at the Divine Word University (Papua New Guinea), and at the University of New South Wales. As well, I am working with a group of TEQSA accredited private higher education providers around Australia, supporting the development of their risk management capabilities and their efforts to gain re-registration and reaccreditation. In that role, I prepared and presented a successful application for Victoria University Malaysia (VUM) to be recognised as an Entry Point Project in the Malaysian Government’s Economic Transformation Program. In 2012, we are working on the Faculty’s postgraduate portfolio and the role of the Victoria Graduate School of Business, along with our executive education offerings and industry and community networks. I joined Victoria University from the Nottingham Business School (NBS) at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom, where I was Associate (Deputy) Dean from August 2008 to March 2010. During this time, I drew on the considerable experience I gained over the previous three decades in a variety of large service organisations

to develop and present highly regarded graduate education programs in business; to establish a team of academic and administrative staff who lived out the School’s service motto, “… everything counts!” every working day; and to gain the School a reputation for excellence in the wider community and internationally. In 2003, as part of the Western Sydney Industry Awards, SGSM won the Business & Corporate Services Award for Most Outstanding Contribution to Western Sydney by an SME, Finalist in the Global Excellence Category, and Highly Commended in the Export Category. SGSM was also a finalist in the Parramatta Regional Awards for Business Excellence in the same year. In 2004, I acted as a judge for both award organisations and, in 2005 and 2006, was Chair of the judging panel for the Parramatta awards.

Before taking on my role at SGSM, I was at Macquarie University for 12 years. I had joined Macquarie in 1990, following a successful career as a senior public sector manager, working in local and State government in NSW, where my responsibilities included direct service leadership, involvement in the commissioning and design of new buildings and services, corporate strategic planning and provision of high-level executive/ministerial policy advice. During my time at Macquarie, I played a significant role in the development and governance of the graduate school, working in an executive capacity as Director Academic Programs during the period of greatest expansion of the School’s award and executive programs, of its international reach and of the size of the student body. I worked closely with business and government organisations, such as McDonald’s, AstraZeneca, and the NSW Police, to develop successful corporate executive programs; I worked with the Director of MGSM to successfully negotiate the establishment of award programs in Singapore and Hong Kong; and I facilitated the development of the School’s DBA program, and its approval by the University’s Academic Senate. I also worked effectively in a number of University-wide committees, including the Postgraduate Studies and Academic Programs Committees of Academic Senate, and provided academic and strategic advice directly to the Vice-Chancellor and a number of the University's other Divisions.

Throughout my university career, I have actively engaged beyond the University, developing enduring networks with professional associations, businesses and the communities in which the university is embedded, locally and internationally. This has enabled me to take advantage of various sources of competitive intelligence in regard to market trends and opportunities to develop meaningful initiatives to mutual benefit. For example, at SGSM, I developed an excellent network of business and community colleagues in Greater Western Sydney serving on the boards of the Parramatta Chamber of Commerce, the Western Sydney Business Connection, and the Asia Business Connection, as well as Chair of the ArtsWest Foundation Ltd. I was a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) Executive for 5 years, including as President, in 1997-98. Over that time, I led the transition of ANZAM from an informal network of colleagues to be recognised as a professional service organisation for management academics. A foundation member of the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR), I was a member of the Inaugural Executive of the Association and served on the Organising Committee of the Association’s Inaugural Conference in Beijing in 2004. As a member of the US Academy of Management, I have worked on the Academy’s International Theme Committee over a number of years, being Committee Chair from 2004 to 2007. In 2007-2008, I was Chair of the Professional Development Workshop program for the Academy’s Management History Division, scholarly Program Chair in 2008-2009, and Division Chair role in 2010-2011. I have been Chair of the Financial Planning Education Council of the Financial Planning Association of Australia since 2011. I have also been actively engaged with AACSB, EFMD and AMBA, for more than a decade.

My qualifications include a first class honours degree in psychology (Australian Psychological Society Prize, 1982), a Master of Public Management (Allen Knott Scholar, 1987), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Vice-Chancellor’s Commendation, 2000). I am published across a range of academic disciplines on management issues, with three books, 11 book chapters, and nearly 35 refereed journal articles. As well, I have presented my research findings in more than 40 papers to local, national and international gatherings, including the Australian and New Zealand, British and US Academies of Management. I was Foundation Associate Editor of the Journal of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management from 1995 to 1999, and Editorial Board member until 2006. I was Editor-in-Chief of the A-ranked Journal of Management History from 2004 to 2011 and continue to serve on a variety of international Editorial Advisory Boards. My current research interests are in management history scholarship, cultural differences in human resource management strategies, and Confucian underpinnings of corporate social responsibility. Four of my last five journal articles were published in A level journals.

Current Role

Corporate Consigliere (http://www.corporate-consigliere.com) July, 1990 – current

Managing Partner & Corporate Consigliere

Corporate Consigliere (incorporating David Lamond & Associates) is a company established in 1990

to work with individual and corporate clients to achieve comprehensive solutions to the business

challenges they face. Corporate Consigliere seeks to be recognised as a leading facilitator of strategic

business solutions for individuals and their enterprises.

We do this by way of our contract research and consulting services in Strategic Corporate Visioning

and Planning; Human Resource Management and Organisational Development; Executive Coaching

and Mentoring; and through our involvement with Australia’s social and business communities,

particularly in greater western Sydney.

We work with companies, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations to articulate their

strategic visions and then translate those visions into reality through people and processes. One major assignment in 2013 was to work with T.I Hospitality (http://www.tihospitality.com.au) in successfully

tendering for a multi-million dollar camp management and hospitality services contract in the mining

industry. In doing so, we prepared all the company’s tender documents and refined/edited its existing

management systems documentation. We have continued our involvement with the preparation and

presentation of the contract performance management reporting documentation at the monthly contract

management meetings. In 2014 and 2015, I prepared Risk Management planning packages for several

TEQSA accredited private higher education providers in Australia.

I am Adjunct Professor of Human Resource Management and International Business at Victoria

University, having had my initial appointment in June 2013 extended by a further 3 years, while I

continue my teaching at Divine Word University (PNG) and the University of New South Wales.

I also continue my work with the following organisations:

GSE Research/Greenleaf Publishing (Academic Adviser & Corporate Consigliere)

Consulting Editor of the Journal of Chinese Human Resource Management, since 2008
