Professional Development Internships

19 September 2016 – 16 June 2017

The Bolashak funded professional

development internships at the University of

Cambridge Faculty of Education will cover key

areas of theory, practice and innovations in

the field of teacher development, such as

pedagogy, curriculum, educational

assessment and pedagogical leadership.

Who should apply?

The programme’s common core will be on pedagogy and

curriculum in schools which cater for children across the 7 – 18

years age range. Two option routes then exist:

in Universities and pedagogic institutions in pre-service teacher

training and education, together with methodologists from

schools in Kazakhstan.

Route 2 (school leadership) aims to recruit Principals and

Teachers in schools or educational organisations in Kazakhstan,

who have a professional interest and engagement in leadership,

subject teaching and learning.

Participants are required to have a minimum English Language

level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent and three years of work

experience. We expect participants to be endorsed by their

employer to undertake this professional development intership

and to qualify for JSC Centre for International Programs funding

(Bolashak International Scholarships).

What is the purpose of the programme?

Route 1 (teacher education) will enable participants to

understand a schools-university and school-based model of

teacher education, as well as examine the pedagogies of

teacher education, the skills of developing of new teachers and

the complementary roles of mentors and university staff.

Route 2 (school leadership) will enable participants to engage

with issues of leadership, learning and professional development

in the broadest sense and at every level, from international

policy to local schools, and to explore national and global

networks and mutually productive partnerships with leading

scholarly and professional communities.

What is the structure of the programme?

Participants on both routes of the programme will study at the

Faculty of Education, as well as shadow, observe and visit

schools and educational institutions.

The 9 month programme will consist of a mixture of placements

in local Cambridge partnership schools, mentoring by

experienced school leaders and teachers, inputs from teacher

education experts and supplementary English language training.

What are the methods of study?

On both routes, work will be assessed through a variety of

methods including portfolios of directed tasks, presentations, a

professional dialogue, written assignments, including elements

that require synthesis, analysis, critique and reflection. The

assessment will include a range of modes of presentation of

ideas and reflections upon practice and theory. This includes:

a seminar presentation; a comparative analysis (3,000 words) of

pre-service teacher education in Kazakhstan and the U.K. (route

1) and teacher leadership in Kazakhstan and the U.K. (route 2);

a small-scale research report (2,000 words); the development of
