Online Professional Development Glossary 

Asynchronous – Learners can access the training at separate times 

Blackboard – Online course management system from a vendor, popular in higher 

education 

Blended learning – Learner receives instruction using both traditional classroom 

and distance learning formats 

Closed structure – Topics have a clear right or wrong answer, not referring to 

course organization 

Connect – Software used to host online workshops and meetings where 

participants meet synchronously to view a presentation and/or collaborate on a 

task 

Cooperative Learning – Learners work together on exercises and are encouraged 

to learn from each other 

Course – Individual or group projects take multiple sessions to complete 

Facilitated – An instructor defines the learning outcomes, provides feedback, and 

coordinates group discussions and other assignments 

Genesys – Online meeting software that can be used to host online workshops 

Moodle – Course management software that is free to download and provides 

the online shell for course content. Can include online discussions, posted files, 

audio, video, and quizzes. 

 

Open structure – Problems are solved without a clear structure, and no right or 

wrong answers 

Podcast – An audio recording that can be listened to online, or downloaded to an 

mp3 player 

Self‐directed – Learners engage in training at convenient times to set their own 

pace for completion 

 

Social network – A Web site that supports an online community of a specific 

group of individuals with a shared interest; a example of one such site popular 

among  educators is Classroom 2.0 (http://www.classroom20.com)  

Streaming video – Online video that begins playing before the entire file has been 

downloaded in order to be viewed more quickly 

Synchronous – All learners participate in training at the same fixed time 

 

Webinar – A seminar or workshop that takes place entirely online 

 

Wiki – A Web site that uses wiki software, which allows visitors to create and edit 

interlinked Web pages; often used to promote collaboration and community 

Workshop – Individual or group accesses training for one session only
