Why study for an ABE qualification?

• ABE is a market leader is the cost-effective provision of high quality business and management

qualifications. These qualifications are not only highly valued in their own right but are also accepted

by universities worldwide onto the latter stages of their degree programmes.

• ABE programmes are available all over the world which means you can study in your own country

and avoid the high cost of studying and living in the UK. Some of the progression agreements which

ABE holds with universities also allow you to study in your country – giving you the chance to

progress from ABE to a degree without leaving home.

• ABE accredits colleges around the world to offer ABE programmes. These colleges, of which there are

hundreds, all have to complete a stringent accreditation application process which ensures

they offer high standards of teaching and facilities.

• ABE has an international network of over 50,000 students currently studying for an ABE qualification.

We aim to support this network as much as possible and to allow our students to interact through

online forums such as Facebook and Twitter as well as face-to-face at events such as alumni

meetings and graduations.

• ABE programmes allow you to study several areas of business management before deciding

what you wish to specialise in. All ABE programmes share common units, giving you the flexibility

to transfer if and when you desire, or obtain a second qualification.

• Students receive certification awards at every stage of the programme, which means if your

studies are discontinued (after attaining a particular level), you will still have a valuable and

recognised qualification.

• Holders of certain other professional qualifications may gain exemptions from ABE Diploma subjects.

• Holders of an ABE qualification may gain subject exemptions in the examinations of other professional

bodies.

• ABE Level 6 Diploma/Level 6 Extended Diploma holders with relevant work experience can gain entry

onto Masters or MBA programmes (see ABE progression chart on page 7)

• ABE Level 7 Diploma holders can advance to the latter stages of Masters or MBA programmes

(see ABE progression chart on page 7)

• All ABE students receive our quarterly magazine, Student Focus, which is designed to keep you

up to date with important ABE news and developments. The magazine also contains essential

study tips to help you succeed in particular ABE units as well as many other useful features.

The theory and practice of business

Why study the Business Management (BM) programme?

The BM programme is a comprehensive and detailed programme which covers the knowledge and skills required

in modern business practice. The programme provides you with an appreciation of the theoretical issues involved in the

study of business whilst also helping you to develop a range of practical skills which will enhance your value to

employers. Major topics covered in the BM programme include management, marketing, economics and accounting.

Programme structure

The BM programme now comprises three pathways:

1. Business Management pathway

2. Business Management – Management of Information Systems pathway

3. Business Management – Financial Management pathway

Each of the pathways is split into three levels: Level 4 Diploma, Level 5 Diploma and Level 6 Diploma.

As the following page illustrates, ABE has developed the Extended Diploma in Business Management, comprising 13

units in one stand-alone qualification. It is accredited by Ofqual as a level 6 qualification. The programme can still be

taken as two separate qualifications at levels 5 and 6.

What do the levels mean?

The levels refer to the ‘level of learning’ required to

complete the qualification. Qualifications at the same QCF Level

Level 3 Other qualifications at the same level

UK ‘A’ level, BTEC National Certificate level are therefore broadly similar (or comparable) in the Level 4 BTEC Professional Diploma level of learning required. Thus the ABE Level 6 Diploma Level 5 UK Foundation Degree, HND is rated at Level 6 on the Qualifications and Credit Level 6 Bachelors Degree Framework (QCF), the same as a UK Bachelors degree. What is a Pathway?

ABE’s Level 4, 5 and 6 Diplomas in Business Management are divided into three separate ‘Pathways’.

A Pathway is a combination of units (with some options within them) which enable you to specialise

in a particular area. The three Pathways are Business Management, Financial Management and the

Management of Information Systems. All successful students will receive a Diploma in Business Management

(at the appropriate level). If you take the Financial Management or Management of Information Systems

Pathways the relevant Pathway will be shown on your award certificate. This will be especially useful if you

are considering a career in, or planning to study further in, either of these Pathway areas.

Do you want to start your own business?

Why study the Business start-up and Entrepreneurship (ENT) programme?

New products and services are the lifeblood of business, but it can often take someone special, an entrepreneur to

identify and develop such opportunities. Many of the largest businesses in the world were started by someone with a

good idea, and the most famous business people are invariably entrepreneurs. ABE has designed a qualification which

will enable you to put your ideas into practise – the Level 4 Diploma in Business Start-up and Entrepreneurship. If you have

a great business idea, but you are not sure what to do next, then the Diploma can help you. It provides an understanding

of the main areas you need to know about in order to run a successful business.

If there is a scarcity of jobs in your country then the Level 4 Diploma in Business Start-up and Entrepreneurship gives you

the skills and knowledge you will need to set up your own business. It can also help you find a job or obtain a promotion,

as all businesses will benefit from employing someone with an entrepreneurial outlook. If you hold the Level 4 Diploma in

Business Start-up and Entrepreneurship it will show that you understand how to develop business ideas.

Programme structure

The unit syllabuses cover the essential understanding, knowledge and skills required by the entrepreneur and include:

- spotting business opportunities

- the importance of knowing your customers

- market demand as the key to commercial viability

- the importance of motivation

- how to construct a business plan to attract potential lenders and investors

- the importance of good market research

- the implementation of the business plan

- innovation and creativity

- the barriers faced

Effective workforce management

Why study the Human resource Management (HrM) programme?

The effective management of an organisation’s human resources is now recognised as a critical component in the

success of public and private enterprises. This recognition has led to a demand for trained and qualified HR

professionals and to the development of a career structure rising to the highest levels of the organisation.

The HRM programme introduces you to the academic disciplines that underlie the effective management of the

human resource, and proceeds to explore the theory, practice and strategy of human resource management.

Programme structure

The Human Resource Management programme is divided into three levels: Level 4 Diploma, Level 5 Diploma and

Level 6 Diploma. ABE has developed the Extended Diploma in Human Resource Management, comprising 13 units in one

stand-alone qualification. It is accredited by Ofqual as a level 6 qualification. The programme can still be taken as two

Frequently Asked Questions

How do i study for the ABE qualifications?

ABE has hundreds of accredited colleges worldwide. A list is available on the ABE website: www.abeuk.com

You can either register through one of these colleges or apply direct to the ABE office.

How do i register?

If you are a first-time applicant then you can register online by clicking on the appropriate link on the ABE

website. Alternatively you can register by downloading the Student Membership Registration Form, completing

it and posting it to us at The Association of Business Executives, 5th Floor, CI Tower, High Street, New Malden,

Surrey, KT3 4TE, UK

Why should i study the Level 6 Extended Diploma?

The Level 6 Extended Diploma is offered in the Business Management, Human Resource Management,

Marketing Management and Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management programmes. The Extended Diploma

is so called because it combines the Level 5 Diploma with the Level 6 Diploma. All the units from both Diplomas

are included in the combined qualification. It is graded at Level 6 because the majority of units are Level 6

units. The Level 5 units contained in the Extended Diploma mean that the entry requirements are for Level 5,

however, successful completion results in the higher Level 6 qualification.

The Extended Diploma provides a more concentrated way for students to study. It also helps students who can

only obtain funding or approval for a single qualification to progress further from their investment.

Am i eligible for any exemptions from the ABE examinations?

If you hold a qualification from either another professional body or University which is very similar in content

and level to the ABE qualification you could qualify for an exemption from some of the ABE examinations.

Please forward a copy of your qualification to the Registrar who will be able to advise you further.

Can i study through distance learning?

Some of ABE’s accredited colleges offer distance learning. Alternatively, students can follow a self-study

route using the ABE syllabus, study manuals, recommended textbooks and questions and answers, which are

available from the ABE website.
