Current methods are inconsistent and non-reproducible

Cooling samples in ice or gel-filled cooling blocks introduces a variety of problems.
Ice cooling • Variable sample temp • Contamination • Wet, illegible labels • Non-reproducible method
Gel-filled coolers • Highly variable sample temp
(edge effect) • Short cooling duration • Cannot use while re-charging
CoolProducts provide consistent and reproducible sample cooling and freezing

Using a thermo-conductive CoolRack® module as an interface between the ice and sample provides a consistent and reproducible cooling method. Eliminating ice with a CoolBox™ system further minimizes the risk of sample contamination and provides hours of consistent and reproducible ice-free cooling or freezing.
Performance test: A temperature probe was placed into a 2.0 mL cryogenic vial containing 1.0 mL of water. The tube was inserted into a CoolRack CF45 thermo-conductive module. The module was placed onto a ThermalTray platform in a 37°C water bath and allowed to equilibrate. The CoolRack CF45 module was then removed and placed onto dry ice and equilibrated to -78°C (0 - 15 minutes) and then returned to the water bath to re-equilibrate to 37°C (15 - 30 minutes). This experiment was repeated five consecutive times and temperature profiles were recorded. Conclusion: The CoolRack CF45 module showed identical cooling profiles and phase transition (orange circles) over five consecutive freeze-thaw cycles.

• Adapts from ambient (25oC) to approx. -150oC in 12-14 minutes • Samples are upright and organized as they flash freeze • No direct contact between sample and LN2 • Reproducible method
• Adapts from ambient (25oC) to -78oC in 5-7 minutes • No need for ethanol – cost savings, no hazardous waste, no “sunk” tubes • Samples are upright and organized as they snap-freeze • Same freezing rate as direct immersion into dry ice or alcohol slurry • Reproducible method
• Adapts from ambient (25çC) to <4çC in 60-90 seconds • Samples stay dry, organized, uniform in temperature • Labels do not get wet or illegible • All samples +/- 0.1oC • Reproducible method
• Adapts to 37°C in approx. 10 minutes • Using a ThermalTray platform and a CoolRack tube module, samples stay above water line – minimizing risk of contamination • Samples remain dry and organized • Uniform sample temperature • Reproducible method

For a variety of tubes and capacities. The new standard for passive cell cryopreservation.
CoolCell®: Alcohol-free cell freezing
• Replaces alcohol-based containers such as “Mr. Frosty” • Simply fill with vials and place -80oC freezer • Radially-symmetric thermal exchange design ensures
uniform cooling profiles to all vial positions • Composed of high-density materials used in aerospace
industry for lightweight & insulative properties • Highly thermo-conductive alloy core • Models include conduction and/or micro-convection air
flow control • Equal or better results than programmable step-down
freezers and alcohol-based freezing containers
Patent Pending
Passive controlled-rate cell freezing container
Page 16
CoolCell: How it works
Replaces “Mr. Frosty” and programmable freezers. No alcohol. No on-going maintenance or cost. No hazardous waste disposal.
“Mr. Frosty” is a trademark of Thermo Fisher Scientific.
Five consecutive freezing runs show extremely consistent thermal profiles.
Page 17
CoolCell containers ensure reproducible freezing profiles
CoolCell Isopropanol Container Consistent freezing rate • All vials have uniform freezing profiles
Inconsistent freezing rate • Isopropanol degradation ensures variability • Two circles of vials results in further non-uniform
heat removal
No isopropanol • No maintenance • No pre-cooling • No hazardous waste
Requires Isopropanol • Track uses so can replenish IPA every 5th use • On-going maintenance • Spill risk • Pre-cool in refrigerator (safety issue)
No hidden cost • Once you buy it, you’re done paying for it!!
> $350 per unit per year to maintain properly • Isopropanol expense • Hazardous waste disposal costs
Easy to use • Cap removes easily when frozen • Not cold to the touch when frozen, no gloves
needed • Ready for reuse after 5 minute warm-up time
Difficult to handle • Cap is difficult to open when frozen, unit is slippery
(cells are warming up) • Protective glove required when handling frozen unit • Unit is cold, slippery, breakable
Minimal impact on freezer • 1/3 the heat impact on freezer; nearby samples
remain unharmed
Impacts local freezer area • Large heat capacity removed from alcohol impacts
nearby samples
