Aneffectiveandefficientmethodofproblemsolvingisbrainstorming;generatingnewandvariedideasinordertobuildcreativityandstimulatemembercontributions.Bouncingideasoffotherpeoplestimulatescreativethinking,whichleadstomoreinnovativesolutions.Brainstormingcanbedoneasaninteractiveexerciseorthepeoplecanworkontheirownbrainstormandthenshareresultswiththegroup.ThisisaneffectivetooltouseinStep2ofthe5-stepprocess.Brainstormingprocess:

Evaluationapprehension

People(especiallyquietones)canbeconcernedaboutmakingagoodimpressionandwillbereluctanttospeakupforfearofbeingjudged.

SocialloafingPeopletendtolosemotivationtoworkhardwhenworkingingroupsbecausetheyfeelthattheothermemberscanpickuptheslack;theyrelyonthemotivationandhardworkofthe‘collective’andthinktheycangeta‘freeride’.

ProductionblockingIndividualcontributionstendtogetinterruptedbythecontributionsofothers,especiallyquietpeoplewhoarelesslikelytojumpinandsaythefirstthingthatcomestomind.

Becarefulusingbrainstorming;thefirstideathatsomeoneorthegroupcomesupwithisnotalwaysthebest.Trytogenerateasmanyalternativesasyoucan.
