What is Problem Based Learning?
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a unique way of learning
that teaches you how to solve complex problems, by teaching
business skills in a practical way.
Widely used in medical schools in Australia and internationally, the
PBL pedagogy is now being adopted in leading business schools
in Europe. Based on the success of these international programs,
Monash University is the first of the Australian Group of Eight
universities to offer an undergraduate business degree where all
core units are undertaken in PBL mode.
While you will study the same course content as the Bachelor
of Business students at our Caulfield campus, instead of the
traditional lecture/tutorial format, the PBL methodology uses a
small group approach to teaching, focusing on solving business
problems similar to those you will typically encounter in the
workforce.Only available at Monash Universitys Peninsula campus, the
Bachelor of Business PBL program aims to provide you with the
skills needed for leadership and management in the business
world, now and into the future.
PBL is a practical approachto studying business. Youhave a better connectionwith the work that you aredoing. You also have a
greater understanding of theconcepts, because youre
not only learning them, youreapplying them.

Bachelor of Business
To be successful in business you need practical skills and a strongunderstanding of the complexities of the business environment in particular,
how the individual parts of a business work, and how they affect each other
and the overall success of a business. Whether you end up working in a global
organisation with thousands of employees, or a small business with just a few
staff, a broad understanding of business fundamentals and how a business
works will be essential to advance your career.
This is what sets our Bachelor of Business degree apart. As well as developing
technical expertise and practical skills in your area of specialistion, you will also
learn crucial skills such as how to think analytically, how to act decisively, and
how to manage people. Its this mix of practical and analytical business skills
that will give you the confidence and ability to make positive contributions to
your organisation and improve the way your business operates.
The Bachelor of Business is offered at our Caulfield and Peninsula campuses.
At Caulfield, the course is taught using traditional teaching methods, while at
Peninsula, the PBL approach is adopted.

How does it work?
1. You learn course content by solving real business
problems. The problems that you are given reflect
compelling contemporary issues in your field of study.
2. You work in small groups to analyse, research, and
discuss problems, and develop and defend solutions to
these problems. You learn from each other as well as
from your academic mentors. Sometimes you will leavethe classroom and head into industry and undertake your
learning there.
3. As you engage with these problems you will acquire a
comprehensive knowledge of business discipline areas
as well as strong skills in communication, team work,
analysis, combining theory with practice and, of course,
problem solving.
4. You will have access to a stimulating learning environment
with the educational support necessary to maximise your
learning outcomes. PBL business units have more face-
to-face class time than traditional business units. This
means that you are individually supported by teachingstaff throughout the course of each days learning
activities, and are able to receive feedback to help them
better understand the principles being discussed.
5. Because of your in-depth involvement with your within-
semester assessment tasks, there is less emphasis on
end of semester exams.
We would like our graduates toreally have those skills that enablethem to work well in teams. Ourbusiness is all team orientated. Its identifying a problem that aclient might have and its being
able to work to solve that problem. There are no labels of divisions;there are no labels of topics. Wehave to take a problem and wehave to provide a solution.

university, the Bachelor of Business at Peninsula offers you
the opportunity to gain skills that will provide you with a

basis, you will develop a strong understanding of how
businesses operate, and gain an appreciation of the link
between theory and practice.

participate in our industry-based learning program. Equivalent
to two units of academic study, this component of the PBL
course provides you with practical experience in the business
world before you leave university.
