PRE-PRESS OPERATIONS

Color Separation andPlate-Making

Page 2: Print Standards

Color Separation

• is the process by which original artwork is separated into individual color components for printing. The components are cyan, magenta, yellow and black, known as CMYK.

PRESS OPERATIONS

On Press

• This is the one part of the process that the graphic designer scarcely influences. It’s now time to say goodbye to the layouts, leaving the printing work in the experienced hands of the printer.

POST-PRESS OPERATIONS

Binding andSpecial Printing Effects

Page 20: Print Standards

Post-Press• All the processes that convert

the printed sheets into folded and bound publications are collectively known as the post-press or finishing operations.

• These can also include operations such as die-stamping, thermography, varnishing and laminating

Page 21: Print Standards

Binding Methods• The first step in binding is to fold

the printed sheets into signatures.

• Next, the signatures are gathered and collated, folded, then cut.

• There are many methods of binding, it might be of help to list some of the more popular ones.

Page 22: Print Standards

SADDLE STITCH

• Insert sections which are bound together with metal stitches through the fold of the spine.

Page 23: Print Standards

SIDE-WIRE STITCHING

• Pages & cover are held together by metal stitches stabbed through from front to back, where the wire is clenched as shown.

Page 24: Print Standards

WIRE-O BINDING

• Classic wire binding style with two separate covers

Page 25: Print Standards

WIRE-O BINDING

• Gathered sections or leaves which are coated with hot glue on the spine and wrap-around cover is then applied.

Embossing

• Embossing uses a specially-made die under high pressure to form a raised three-dimensional impression that allows you to literally feel the design.

Page 27: Print Standards

Debossing

• Design is heat-pressed into the surface of the paper with a die, creating depressions or indentations rather than raised impressions as in embossing.

Page 28: Print Standards

Foil Stamping

• A heated die fuses the foil onto the paper, bonding the design to the surface. Hot foil stamping adds shimmer and texture to highlight specific text or images.

Die-Cutting• The cutting of

stock with steel dies to remove a part or to leave a part attached so that it can be folded away from the rest of the sheet.
