PRINT & PAPER AREA NEWSLETTER End-of-Year 2013-14 & Beginning of Year 2014-2015 The 2013-2014 End-of-Year newsletter gets to double as the 2014-2015 Beginning-of-Year newsletter. What follows is a summary on what went on in the area this past year and so might give some indication of things to come. – Peter Scott VISITING ARTISTS In September guest artists from Cuba Norberto Marrero and Janette Brossard gave a talk and presented work while they were in Boston for their exhibition at the Multicultural Art Center in Cambridge. Sue Gosin, founder and director of Dieu Donné artist papermill in New York, lectured and ran a day-long workshop in October. In October, Marnix Everaert (Prof. Printmaking, Academie Beeldende Kunsten, Gent, BE), visited SMFA to begin research adapting non-toxic printmaking methods current in the E.U. to American methods and chemistry. This visit was the first part of a year–long sabbatical project for Prof. Everaert extending across the U.S. and Canada at over twelve print shops and universities. This culminated with Prof. Everaert holding a 2-day non-toxic print workshop at SMFA in April (2014), just before his return to Belgium. This included participation with faculty and students from Mass Art and Wellesley College. Tanja Softić visited, lectured and presented work in conjunction with her January exhibition at Tuft’s Aidekman Gallery. In November Kristin Martincic visited and lectured about her work in conjunction with an exhibition of her work at Wellesley College. Following the lecture and presentation of some of her work she conducted an impromptu monotype workshop. In February we regretted having cancel at the last minute the visit of artists Enrique Chagoya and his wife Kara Maria, due to illness, but we are looking forward to rescheduling them in the fall. Thanks to the irrepressible drive of faculty member Carolyn Muskat, the second annual Iron Printmakers Competition was held at the Mass Art printshop in March. Competing against teams from Mass Art, BU, and Lesley Univ. College of Art & Design, SMFA team members Alex Gutierrez, Maya Ramos, Eun Gyu Lee, and Yasmine Batniji, under the obsessive coaching staff of Emily Lombardo and Sarah Peck, came away with the gold! Well, not really gold, but parts of the trophy are pretty shiny and you can see it on display in the printshop office (Carolyn put this together as well, the previous night).

More thanks, this time to the anonymous donations of $1600 for Annual Print & Paper Area Awards from a few highly esteemed friends:. This year we were able to award five prizes in recognition of work in the annual area show. Recipients included Fatima Albudoor, Tracey Bullington, Lindsy Davis, Eun Gyu Lee and Claire Roll. In addition we were able to give honorable mention paper awards to Renée Guyer, Akiko Kunii, Courtney Kuno, Nina Morris and Emma O’Leary. EXCHANGE PORTFOLIOS

1. The first was the annual Class Action Suite, an in-house exchange portfolio with faculty and student participants. This year lucky new faculty member Graham McDougal got the chance to manage the squirrely herd of 27 participants and get the portfolios collated and distributed at the end-of-year potluck collating party. The theme was “Aliens!” and the format was 5” x7” trading cards. The finished portfolio is profound, brilliant and out of this world (on trajectory to Neptune).

2. John Schulz, in collaboration with our friend and colleague Erika Adams (now heading the Print Dept. at Concordia University in Montreal), masterminded the second initiative. This was a student/faculty portfolio exchange between SMFA and Concordia on the theme “The Space Between.” Major thanks are given here to Area Manager Jenny Hughes for endless portfolio construction for this

venture. 3. The third exchange was another brainchild of John Schulz along with friend and

colleague (as well as former Visiting Artist) John Brown, painting faculty at Edinburgh College of Art. Students and faculty from both schools submitted narratives of 70 words or less. These were then assigned to individual participants at the other school who proceeded to produce a single page illustration/comic of the narrative. On the SMFA side, this also roped in participation and organizational help from Chantal Zakari, Graham McDougal, Brian Reeves, Ethan Murrow, and Joel Frenzer. The resulting book, with layout and design by Chantal Zakari, has been reviewed as “truly a thing of wonder and coolness.” The book is ready-to-print at Lulu.com for a mere $14.60 plus shipping. SOUTH AFRICA EXCHANGE WORKSHOP

It has been a long time coming, but this year we launched a new class that spent two weeks in Johannesburg. Working with our esteemed friend, colleague and alumna Kim Berman, Senior Lecturer at the University of Johannesburg as well as the founder and director of Artist Proof Studio in Jo’burg, the SMFA organized a two week workshop, collaborating with students and faculty at the print department at UJ and at APS. For those not familiar with APS and its mission to train young people in printmaking and the arts, visit their website at http://artistproofstudio.co.za/ At the invitation of Kim Berman and UJ, Michelle Samour arrived a couple of weeks prior to the class in order to conduct a workshop for faculty and students at UJ on papermaking and sculptural applications. She then stayed on hand to greet the

arrivals from SMFA – 10 students and Post-Grad Teaching Fellow Emily Lombardo – to conduct with Emily the exchange workshop on combinations in papermaking and printmaking. Responses from the SMFA students about the class were pretty enthusiastic: “… it was the most eye opening, emotional, culturally drenched trip I have ever been on. Between the museums, galleries, zoo, sculpture park, openings… then finishing the print in time.. it was a lot. I mean, A LOT.” (Lindsy Davis) “… a phenomenal brainchild program that could really only happen at somewhere like SMFA. It takes all of the best pieces of the Museum School’s learning culture, and then magnetizes it on an international level.” (Zoe Scott) “… it was an AMAZING experience, Emily, Michelle and Kim were beyond fantastic, and I have no doubt that this trip should and needs to continue.” (Allison Hylant) “Our collaborative projects were difficult because we had ambitious goals set for a very short period of time, but in the end each group problem solved and ended up with work that we all felt proud of. My only regret is that we couldn’t stay three times as long.“ (Catya Bastien) Everyone was impressed by the welcome from their fellow students at UJ and APS, especially with the barbecue (brai) when they arrived and the visit to Soweto with students from UJ. While they found the projects a challenge in the face of a short deadline, Kim also succeeded to schedule trips to see wildlife at a nature reserve, tour the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, and a visit with William Kentridge at his studio, assisting him in production for one of his animations. It was a very tight fit to schedule this trip in between the beginning of Review Boards and Commencement. It was also a bit complicated by holidays and elections in South Africa, along with logistic challenges at UJ. Because we are hoping to offer this course on a biannual basis, a priority for South Africa Exchange Workshop II will be a longer stay. Our thanks to many people for their support and assistance in making this possible, from President Bratton and Dean McKinnon, to Sarah Hutchinson for her snagging great rates on air fare, to the registrar Taylor Horner for streamlining the participants review board schedules, and to Jonathan Calm and David Davison in the Senior Thesis Program for facilitating logistics with Senior Thesis participants. In addition to Michelle Samour and Emily Lombardo, the SMFA student participants were Catya Bastien, Christina Davidson, Lindsy Davis, Helene Elsborg, Emma Fee, Allison Hylant, Mara Morris, Miller Schulman, Zoe-Rose Scott, and Nicole Sylvia. FACULTY/STAFF

Erika Adams and Jenny Hughes at the inaugural Iron Printmakers Competition

For the past five years Jennifer Hughes has been the human hot glue gun that has held the Print and Paper Area together. Overseeing three studios, each with distinctly different needs, equipment and inventories, scheduling and mentoring teaching assistants and monitors, keeping pace with repairs and orders, the studios would have jammed up without her attention, foresight and, most especially, her good humor. One day I came into the shop office to find Jenny excitedly watching a movie on the computer. Expecting something salacious or at least illicit, I found she had discovered a video that showed her how to retrofit the pressure gauge on to the new hydraulic pump for the paper press – hot! While we all regret that she will be leaving us this August, we are extremely happy for her on her new job as full-time faculty at Milton Academy -- lucky them! We are also happy to announce that, after a competitive search, Emily Lombardo will be taking over her position as Area Manager. Lucky us! In addition to his work with the SMFA/Concordia portfolio and the SMFA/ECA “Picture Stories” exchange, John Schulz was instrumental in hosting guest artist Marnix Everaert, serving as Vice Chair for the Faculty Senate and Chair for the Faculty Affairs Committee. On beyond the SMFA, in February he was a visiting artist/lecturer at the University of Virginia, conducting a presentation and open discussion in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition The Printmakers Left: Ex.Hi. 3, The Visionary Workbook, Ruffin Gallery, UVA, curated by Dean Dass, (Prof. Printmaking). The visit included group and individual critiques with advanced students in printmaking and

drawing, and the printing of two works in letterpress/photopolymer gravure for a new student/faculty project at the Virginia Arts of the Book Center. John also had work in a group show at Milton Academy – “Contemporary New England Printmakers”, Nesto Gallery, Milton, MA. Curated by Bill Fick of Supergraphic, Durham, NC, artists included Lynn Allen, Bill Fick, Phyllis McGibbon, Andrew Raferty, John Schulz, Laurie Sloane, and Jim Stroud. Jennifer Schmidt has been on leave of absence this past year but her presence has been felt nevertheless. Returning in the fall, she has been elected on to the Faculty Senate and will also be involved with grad advising. While away she has taken on two residencies and five exhibitions. The residencies include a printmaking residency at the Gowanus Studio Space in Brooklyn, and a residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Swing Space on Governors Island. Michelle Samour was invited to participate in the handmade paper exhibition Fabriano 1624 at the Italian Embassy in Washington DC, and Contemporary Watermarks at the Fabriano Paper and Watermark Museum in Fabriano, Italy. Her work was included in Paper Made, at the Jamestown Art Center, Jamestown RI. Her article, “Preserving the Story of Paper: A Conversation with the Koretskys” appears in the Summer 2014 issues of Hand Papermaking Magazine. She was selected to be part of the international Hand Papermaking Portfolio, Negative Space, and was the recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in Drawing. Michelle was also a Visiting Artist at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa this spring where she worked for two weeks with students to create a handmade paper based sculptural installation at the University. Immediately following this she co-taught the SMFA South Africa Exchange Workshop with Emily Lombardo. This initiative would not have been possible without Michelle’s hard work and leadership. For more on the Workshop, see article above.   Graham McDougal has successfully adjusted to the SMFA during his first year of teaching here. In addition to being saddled with managerial duties for the Class Action Suite, he participated in as faculty in the workshop at BU with Ibrahim Miranda and installed an exhibition with his Print in Color course in the new gallery space below the atrium. June and July he spent as Byrdcliffe Artist in Residence at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild. Incidentally, the Starn Twins had an big exhibition of documentation and photo/drawing/ prints in the gallery space. Muskat Studios – under the direction of founder, owner, master printer and capo di tutti Carolyn Muskat-- celebrated 20 years of collaboration and artistic creation this past January with an exhibition at Somerville’s Brickbottom Gallery. Carolyn has worked with more than 50 artists to publish over 400 prints in two decades of printmaking. The main gallery space presented a survey of the collaborative prints, editions, and artists’ books created at Muskat Studios over the past 20 years. The second gallery was a selection of Carolyn’s own artwork. Not just a master printer tech geek, her work encompasses a wide span of printmaking techniques to create 2D and 3D work, as well as installations. A full-color catalog includes all of the work produced in the studio to date, as well as a fascinating history of the founding of the studio, collaboration with artists, and an overview of printmaking in the Boston area. The catalogue is available through blurb: http://blur.by/1oNFRtp This summer, Carolyn received an invitation to represent the US at the Sasaran International Art Festival 2014, an international arts workshop and residency in Malaysia scheduled for late November and early December. The festival will host artists from 23 countries, creating and sharing work over 12 days, and will conclude with an exhibition. After the festival, she will travel to Vietnam for her fourth visit, and connect with many of the artists she has worked with over her past three visits. As part of the 2015 SGCI conference in Knoxville, TN, Carolyn will be participating in the International Panel: “Outside the Comfort Zone: The Print as a form of Graphic Diplomacy”. She will also be presenting a technical demonstration: “Photo-litho Plates: Not Just for Photo Anymore.”

Liz Shepherd was part of an exhibition organized by the Boston Sculptors Gallery in the Qorikancha Musuem in Cusco, Peru. The project brought together artists from Peru and Boston to create an exchange of artistic ideas and promote cross-cultural collaboration. The challenge was to create work that was a part of her own body of work but also demonstrated a Peruvian influence. Her contribution to the exhibit was a pair of 12-foot tall screenprints on fabric. She designed a striped fabric whose colors where drawn from images of Peruvian textiles. and had the fabric printed by Spoonflower in the US, then silkscreened the image of the ladder on the fabric. It is a continuous image printed from 9 screens. The title is ¡Arriba! LATE BREAKING NEWS: in August we learned that Liz is a 2014 recipient of a SMFA Alumni Traveling Fellowship Award!

Asuka Ohsawa, Visiting Faculty replacement for Jenn Schmidt this past fall and SMFA alumna, is currently in a mini-exhibition at a silkscreen studio called Bradbury & Blanchard in Sheffield, UK, where she did a collaborative publishing project in time for the Tour de France. You can see the picture here: http://www.bandbgallery.com/product/milk-girls-by-asuka-ohsawa The bigger news is that she will be moving from New York to San Francisco to assume her new job (full-time!) as Assistant Professor in Printmaking at San Francisco Art Institute. Whoa! She writes, “I suppose I am technically a SFAI faculty member now, but I keep referring to SMFA as “my school”. I’ll miss SMFA greatly, and it will take me a while to get used to the transition for sure…. My partner John and I’ll begin our cross-country drive on July 26th, and we’re hoping to visit as many roadside kitsch sites as we possibly can along the way. Our first stop will be the biggest garden gnome in the world in upstate NYC. Hurrah!” Bob Siegelman has just wrapped up a self-made two-month residency in Berlin. Additional activities include the following:

• He was exhibited in the Grossman Gallery faculty exhibit, of faculty members showing work relating to recent sabbaticals.

• He also exhibited two prints, a wood cut/monoprint and a letterpress print, at Holy Cross College, The Iris B. and Gerald Cantor Gallery.

• He was in Part One and Part Two of the exhibition: reThink Ink: 25 Years at Mixit Print Studio.

• A letterpress print with collage and drawing was selected by Bill Flynn (Juror) for the exhibition Direct / Indirect, Small Works 2014 at the Chandler Gallery at Maude Morgan Arts.

• He has a large woodcut print on display at The Windows at 259 A Street, Boston, MA -- organized by Steven Muller and viewable from the street every evening.

Emily Lombardo, again, our new Area Manager: The first set of Emily's, The Caprichos, was purchased by the Boston Public Library and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. You can see these works by appointment on their own or with Goya's Caprichos. Lombardo was an artist in residence at the Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro, NC. During her month she worked with the Museums collection of framed art to create a piece that reflects on the complex nostalgia of this work and their cultural moment. She will be discussing her process and inspiration for her etching work, while creating and printing examples, with a hands-on activity table for visitors.
