Junior Sub-School

J2-Zoe Wow! What a year J2 have had! So much fun and learn-

ing has taken place in the classroom, on the playground

and on exciting excursions. Most recently J2 have been

learning about how to be safe on our roads with the

help of ‘Super Cat’ who is reminding us to STOP LOOK

LISTEN and THINK before we cross the road. Well done

to all students for making such huge achievements this

year. Everyone was very proud to see their photos of

what they have completed this year. We loved deco-

rating our achievement photos to send home to our

families.

J1– Sandy As term 4 draws to an end, J1 students are continuing to learn and make memories with their classmates in and outside of school. They have learnt a range of things from how to count by 10s to 100, to what it means to be a friendly and fair friend, and learning to read familiar words by sounding out the initial sound of a word. We have also been lucky to experience a range of excursions and programs this term; such as Athletics Day, the Concert, a trip to the movies to watch Abominable and the Variety Christmas Party. The students’ dedication and positive energy to undertake any task has been the drive for their success in all learning and extra-curricular activities. Well done J1 for a very successful and happy school year filled with great achievements!

J3-Emily Wow! What an amazing year we have had in J3 and

how sad we are to see it come to an end. We have

been investigating how seeds grow during science.

The Junior/Primary concert was a huge success and a

lot of fun to participate in. We have seen a lot of

positive student achievements coming out of the

end of year reports and final student support group

meetings. Everyone has been uncontrollably excited

for the Variety Day Christmas Party and meeting

Santa, as well as excitedly anticipating the upcoming

summer break.

J4-Lyndall & Stephanie B J4 have had another action packed term of learning! They were amazing

at the concert and some of our students received awards at the awards

assembly. They have had a magical end to the year at the annual Variety

Christmas party. Students enjoyed going on various rides, eating yummy

food, listening to carols and meeting Santa. At the end of the day each

child got to take home a special gift from Santa!!! It has been a wonderful

year to watch the students of J4 learn and grow and develop social and

academic skills….Well done J4 I am super proud of you all.

J7-Lucy Junior 7 have had an amazing year, and it is hard to be-lieve it is nearing the end of 2019! As we move into December the students will be partici-pating in many end of year celebrations like the big Vari-ety Christmas Party, Kaboom and the Junior sub-school end of year party. I know the students will have a great time celebrating together. We have been writing book reviews and the students have been enthusiastic about sharing what they like and don’t like in a picture story book. This has been the result to regular visits to our school library, daily reading sessions and one-on-one reading with the teacher. Every student has developed a real love of reading and sharing of stories.

J6-Simran J6 have been putting a lot of effort in their learn-

ing, even leading up to the end of Term. We are

celebrating their hard work by playing special

games such as ‘sound detectives’. In Numeracy we

have been adding and subtracting numbers and

revising money by paying for items when going to

the ‘J6 Cinema’. In Literacy they have read stories

such as ‘The Little Red Hen’ and ‘The Three Billy

Goats Gruff’ and have really enjoyed looking at the

characters and sharing their favourite parts of the

story. We have been learning how to be bucket

fillers so we can be kind to one another. J6 also

had an incredibly fun time at TGI Fridays and Bowl-

ing for their excursion. They showed great team-

work by encouraging one other. J6 have been a joy

to teach and I hope everyone has a great summer

break and New Year.

J5-Fiona Students also have been participating in the Collingwood Children’s Farm program. Students learn independence and responsibility through the program by looking after the animals and understanding the elements of what it takes to look after animals. The students also get to have the opportunity to interact with nature.

J8– Stephanie

The students of J8 have put a lot of effort in to

their learning for the rest of the term and year! All

of their hard work has paid off. This term J8 have

been working on time identifying the minute hand

on the clock and counting by 5’s. In Literacy the

students have been working in their literacy

groups, some groups reading adapted readers

about the farm and some groups reading and

making their own silly sentences. We enjoyed our

last excursion to LEGOLAND with J7. It was really

fun. Also this term we performed our banana boo-

gie song for our concert it was so much fun. Thank

you for an amazing year J8 there has been so

much amazing learning happening throughout the

year. I hope that everyone enjoys the school holi-

days and has a well-deserved break.

Primary Sub-School

This has been a fantastic year of growth for Primary students. Students have demonstrated our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience towards each other, their learning and various changes that have oc-curred throughout the year. We are very proud of all of our students.

Our final term this year has been filled with a range of special activities and events. This week was our last

week of swimming. Congratulations to those students who have completed the swimming safety skills

program. Ten students and three staff attended the Blackwood camp last week. Despite some initial homesick-

ness, all students had a fabulous time bonding with each other and developing their independence. Students

took part in an imagination trail, ropes course, archery and visited Sovereign Hill where they learnt about the

Gold Rush.

We had our School Awards Ceremony on Monday. Primary award recipients were: Primary 1: Cooper B Primary 2: Fouad K Primary 3: Dereon S Primary 4: Mehmet U

Primary 1-Elyce Great work this year Primaries 1!! You have worked very hard over the term and the year. Over the year we have been lucky enough to attend a range of fun and educational excursions. During these times I have observed excellent growth in everyone’s skills such as following direction, engaging in activities and socialising with their peers appropriately. This term I have seen students turn taking, and as per usual getting in there and working hard during Numera-cy, Literacy, Science and Respectful Relationships. I am extremely proud of the group and how they have shown resilience when they have been faced with emotional situations, showing compas-sion and strength during these times. I wish everyone a fun holiday, full of great adventures!

Primary 2-Holly

Wow, what a wonderful year it has been in P2 at Hume Valley

School! I am so incredibly proud of all of the students in P2. Every

single one of them! It has been a privilege to be their teacher. 2019

has been a massive year filled with learning and fun. We all

achieved significant goals, both academic and personal. We learnt

the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience and dis-

played those both in and out of the classroom every single day. On

behalf of myself and the wonderful ES’s who have worked in the

class I would like to thank the students and their families for an

amazing year!

Primary 3 -Cennet As the end of term is near, we have learnt so many things along the way. P3 have been busy learning about healthy eating. We have been looking at the foods we should be eating every day and the foods we should only be eating sometimes. P3 also learnt that we should be eating five vegetables and two fruits every day. We came up with a fun idea of how we can incorporate that in our everyday lives by making fruit kebabs.

Primary 4-Fi P4 have had an amazing Term

4. They have been working

hard on their reading, writing

and numbers. Students have

enjoyed learning about the sea-

sons of the year, telling the

time with an analogue clock

and using calendars. P4 are in-

creasingly confident using their

letter sound knowledge to cre-

ate words to write simple sen-

tences and class stories.

Primary 5-Brigid Well done to everyone for their hard work and effort this year. Every single student has made some fantastic progress, and I am so proud of every single one. A massive “thank you” to each and every student for making 2019 a wonderful year of learning and growing.

End of Year Concert

The 2019 school year is almost finished! What a fantastic year it has been! We have recently had many high-lights and celebrations within the past fortnight. The end of year school concert was such a fantastic display of performances that included singing, dancing and showing our talents by playing various instruments. It was great to see so many parents attend to see everyone participating and having a great time. A special thanks to Natasha and Ben for their efforts in organising such an enjoyable and successful event

Middles students have been working so hard to create their ‘season’ dioramas. It’s been great to see students' creativity with arts and crafts materials to produce beaches, rain, snow, thunder, lightning, flowers, umbrellas, people, BBQs and even an ice skating rink! Everyone has been busy preparing to present their finished prod-ucts in an exhibition so we can all such wonderful creations!

Secondary Sub-School

Secondary News As another year draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to wish BAILEY, EREN T, CHRIS, NATASHA, NORMAN, OLIVIA, JOSEPH, VARUN, ALYANOUR, AHMED, JAY, NICHOLAS, KONO, DYLAN, JACK, MUSTAFA, KARRAR, ALEX, CHIARA, CEYHAN, KARLEENA, TAMARA, MIRNA, KIBARIL, ALEISHA, KALEB, KHALED, KIYAN, EREN S, and RAHMATULLAH the best of luck for PreCal next year. We have seen them grow into mature young adults who are now ready for this exciting new chapter in their learning journey. On behalf of all Secondary staff I would like to thank all of our parents for their ongoing support throughout the year. To achieve the best outcomes for our young adults there needs to be an ongoing partnership between HVS, our students and their parents. We all know that the teenage years can be quite a turbulent period, and by us working together certainly assists this journey for them. Enjoy the summer holidays everyone Laurel Britton

S2-Kellie

S2 has had a great end to the year. Everyone is busily preparing for the art exhibition and we have made lots of different items. S2 have mastered making cup cakes and made 60 vanilla cupcakes!!!! Students have also made reindeer food and chocolate covered wishing stones. What a hype of activity. Everyday something is different!!!! It has been really hard not to eat all the lovely treats we have been making. Everyone is looking forward to have a very long rest on the holidays and some students are also looking forward to Christmas as well.

S1-Georgina

What an amazing run S1 has had in its final last weeks of Term 4. Along with S2, S1 went on an excursion to the Chinese Museum and look forward to joining S6 in our City Experience excursion later in the term. Throughout Term 4 we have been participating in the Hume Valley Market Program. Initially creating a design for the new and improved banner, S1 later transferred to the cooking pro-gram. In this, we have been cooking up a storm every Friday. S1 has even been trialling their talents at the checkout. In Term 4 we were honoured to host the annual Hume Valley Performance and weren’t we spoilt! The level of talent, passion, and hard work by the organisers really paid off as this year’s performance was the best yet! Within S1 we had both Ollie and Jordan kill it on the drums, Bailey lent his voice to a drama performance, and Noah impressed us all with his amaz-ing dancing skills. Term 4 also was host to the Hume Valley Awards, where teach-ers and leading class honour those students who have led by example and displayed the School’s values – Respect, Respon-sibility, and Resilience. Well done to all our students, those who achieved awards and those who just missed out. You all did exceptionally well. I would like to congratulate Cameron on being the recipient for S1. Well Done! It has been a fantastic year. Thank you to S1 for making it so memorable.

S3-Eva S3 read some interesting articles about how we ALL need to wear seatbelts in the car. The article is described as ‘compare and contrast’. The author kept asking us would we rather ‘die or live’ ? The whole class said we want to LIVE. The whole class discussed what would happen if we didn’t wear our seatbelts, even though we would move side to side , it wouldn’t be fun if our injuries were very serious. Please remember, it doesn’t matter whose car you sit in , you must always put your seatbelt one even if it’s uncomfortable.

S6 –Kai Throughout term 4 S6 has been researching, designing and working with the primaries to building a number of Insect hotels to go up around the school. These hotels have been designed to improve the biodiversity of insects within our school grounds. S6 has decided to focus on attracting pollinators such as native stingless bees, the blue bandit bee and a number of species of butterflies. We can’t wait to see who and what moves into our new hotels.

S4-Jas Singh What a year in S4! It’s been such a positive Term 4, full of laughter and learning. S4 students have come far this year and can be proud of the effort they have put into their study and gaining new experiences. We have made many happy memories together and done lots of im-portant growing up, which is sometimes difficult but always worthwhile. Our Literacy program focused on consolidating the skills learnt throughout the year and developing a love for reading. We read the book Gallipo-li together as a class. Everyone looked forward to these reading sessions and they generated a lot of critical questions and understanding of humanity. For Numera-cy, we have been focusing on practical money maths and mental calculation of change for when we go to the shops. S4 has had a few lovely weeks in the garden for our Market Enterprise program with S1 and S6. We are loving getting out there and doing some work with our hands. As the teacher of this exceptional crew in S4, I considered myself blessed to be a part of my student’s lives. Looking forward to watching you all grow into in-dependent and happy young women and men!

S5-Zoe The end of the year is so near now! S5 demonstrated very respectful and responsible behaviour on their excursion into the CBD and are looking forward to visiting the Chinese Museum on another excursion. In S5 with Literacy, we have been focusing on animals and writing tasks that allow us to reflect on endan-gered species in Australia. In Maths, we have been enhancing our money skills as well as using clocks to work out time. The students miss having Bahar in the classroom, but have been working super hard and are proud of the work they have produced to show her on her return.

Pre-CAL

PreCAL Report

It has been a busy and wonderful year for PreCAL! The students have had many amazing op-portunities and have grown up and matured in the process. We have covered a wide range of different learning experiences to prepare them for the future beyond school including: work placements, driver’s education, career planning, and vocational studies to name a few. Work placements have exposed students to industry specific skills in areas of hospitality, retail, horticulture, animal care, and warehousing. Through weekly rotations in these areas, students have gained an insight into the workforce and have grown in confidence and inde-pendence. Students have developed a multitude of new skills thanks to their enthusiasm and eagerness to participate in workshops covering visual and performing arts, cooking, physical education, and information technology. The variety of workshops have given students a taste of possible future pathways in their areas of interest. All of the students’ achievements have culminated in an end of year celebration through their PreCAL graduation. The day was a huge success - students were presented with certificates and attended an amazing luncheon at the Watergardens Hotel International Buffet. The PreCAL program in its second year has continued to prosper. This is evidenced in the level of maturity and skills they have gained, and the young adults they are becoming. This has been possible not only due to the cooperation of the students, but also in thanks to the team-work, support and collaboration of all PreCAL staff.

What a busy and amazing year we have had at VCAL. Early in the year students, staff and parents participated in dance lessons in prepara-tion for the Debutante Ball. The night of the ball is one that will live long in many of our memories, with the students performances exceeding all expectations. Our students have all participated in Vocational Educational Training (VET) courses choosing courses that match their interests outside of school and vocational path-ways. VET studies included courses in Horticulture, Printing and Graphic Arts, Crea-tive Industries, Sport and Recreation, and Hair and Beauty. Creative Industries produced, practiced and performed a play “Not Filthy Your Hon-our” with students from Printing and Graphic Arts supporting their efforts using Pho-toShop to produce flyers, posters and the play program. Our students produced a vid-eo that was entered into the national competition “Focus on Ability”. Many hundreds of entries are submitted to this competition and our group of students were placed fourth! Once again a group of students and teachers went to the annual Queensland Educational Tour and this proved to be a wonderful experience for our students. Our Year 12 Graduation proved to be a wonderful celebration of the end of the stu-dents secondary schooling, with multi-media presentations and a special farewell song that pulled on everyone’s heart strings. All of our Year 12 students have an individual pathway for 2020. This is organised through the year starting with a Careers Expo in Term One, followed by a series of conversations and visits to post-school providers by the students, parents and Kathy, our Vocational Practitioner. Amazing work everyone, enjoy the break!

Skateboarding What a great term with the skate crew.

For our last session our instructor,

Richard brought down a broken board

which needed replacing. A couple of

students enjoyed working on this

together and put on some new off road

wheels. They then all got to have a go

riding the skateboard down the grass

hill and around the skate park.

Equine Therapy This term has seen the students really

develop their skills and confidence

when handling the horses. Our last

week saw almost everyone have a go

riding Jim the horse. We were also

spoilt by Candlebark’s resident chef,

Joe who surprised us with dessert on

our visit. The students won’t be for-

getting about their special experiences

and friends made any time soon.

STEM Students have enjoyed Term 4 STEM exploring the theme of natural disasters. Student have simulated tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and land-slides in their endeavour to understand some the most destructive forces on Earth.

Woodwork Students from Primary to Secondary have worked tirelessly on their woodwork projects this term. The Pri-mary students have created miniature bookshelves and the Middles and Secondaries constructed bespoke birdhouses. Excellent work!!! Nic Galt

Community Connections

In term 4 students have participated in soccer at A league club Western United’s training facility which was a big hit for two weeks. The last three weeks of interschool sport for 2019 sees stu-dents heading down to Riverside golf club in Ascot Vale to try our hand at golf. We will be attempting the driving range, mini golf and even the chipping green. Another great term for everyone involved in interschool sports. Well done to every student that has partici-pated across a range of sports in 2019

Interschool Sport

Personal training Term 4 at Red team personal training has again been a huge hit with all students involved. Students have been given the opportunity to compete against each other in a range of challenges including using the rower, skier, bike, bench press and pulldown machine. Every student continued to strive to beat their personal bests from week to week which is fantastic to see. Congratulations to every student who has participated in community connections for 2019. Well done.

Dance

Physical Education

Well, here we are at the end of Term 4, 2019. What a year it has been for the students who participated in Dance and Drama! Firstly, a big congratulations to the students who performed at this year’s end of year con-cert! A great deal of time and effort went into preparing each performance for the concert, and it was amazing to see the confidence and happiness students expressed whilst they performed each item. And of course, a HUGE thank you also goes out to the families who supported each of their star performers in the weeks/days leading up to and on the day of the concert – without an audience there is no such thing as a performance, so thank YOU! Secondly, It is with some sadness that I announce to you I won’t be returning to Hume Valley School in 2020. And although it is the right decision for me to move on, I have genuinely loved being a part of each and every students’ journey this year. It has been truly rewarding for me to develop relationships with students that are built on trust, collaboration and our school’s value of respect. By utilising the playful practices of Dance and Drama, we have worked together to turn apprehension into confidence and joy over the course of the year. I ultimately leave Hume Valley School with many happy memories I will cherish always. Finally, it never ceased to amaze me the capacity your children have for taking responsibility for their learning and their willingness to practice resilience, even on days when they really had to dig deep to do so. So many students here at Hume Valley School love to dance, act and play. If your child is one of them, I would absolute-ly encourage you to help them find ways to always be creatively involved in their communities. Until next time, take care of yourselves and the people you love. Amy Clarke

Media & Deisgn

Now that tennis has finished up, Junior stu-

dents have been enjoying learning and partici-

pating in new minor games. We have been

focusing on following the game rules and

working together with our team members.

Their favourite so far has been run the gaunt-

let and scooter races.

Student this semester have enjoyed getting back to

the basics of photography in Term 3. They took ad-

vantage of the early spring flowering to take some

amazing photographs of the local flora of the

school. Their amazing results were shown in the Art

Show this term, an exhibit that showcased the best

of the students’ achievements. In term 4 we turned

our attention to the internet, developing web pages

for students to create their own blogs. Students up-

dated these blogs each week with posts expressing

their interests and views on a range of topics, from

reviews of films to plans for the upcoming holidays.

The students have done fantastically this year with

Music

Once again the concerts this year were a great success. It was wonderful watching our students performing onthe stage and showing their talents. They have been practicing their items with enthusiasm and patience. Juniors 1 and 2 played percussion instruments along with the music and J 3 and 4 surprised us with their amaz-ing singing “Moana” and “Watermelon” songs. Juniors 5, 6, 7 and 8 cheered the audience with their cool dance moves, “Penguin”, “Hip Hop Little Bunnies”, “Banana Boogies” and “Chicken dance” were fun to watch! Primaries 1, 3 and 4 played percussion instruments to “Rock You” and “Cool Beats” songs. Liam, Kevin and No-ah from P3 sang “I like to Swing” song along with instruments. P 2 and 5 showed off their acting skills with “Andie’s Coming” and “Kids on The Stage” acts. The concert was concluded with the “Here comes the Sun” song sung by the choir. Lots of amazing items were performed at the middles and secondaries concert. M 1, 2 and 3 danced along with “Dance Monkey”, “Waka Waka” and “Senorita” songs. Martina was so brave to sing solo to the audience. Well done Martina!!! A special thank you goes to M6 for practicing and performing their own dance “We are All In This Together”, the performance was a great success! So many drummers from secondary section were show-ing off their skills, well done Ben, Ollie, PJ, Natasha and Jordan for playing drums on the stage. Dance class real-ly impressed the audience with the “Sky Full of Stars” and “Everybody Dance Now” dances. Noah was a super star with the pom poms. The choir concluded the concert with the “Hallelujah” and “This is Me” songs. Big thank you to our wonderful MCs Natasha and Corey who presented every item. Natasha Rakhlin

What an exciting term it has been in

Homecrafts! Students have learnt how to

prepare lots of recipes such as: Tacos, Cream

mushroom pasta, San Cho Bao, Sushi sand-

wiches, tuna pasta, vegetable face crackers,

fruit salad, burgers, etc. Through this process

they have developed skills to identify healthy

food options as well as cutting vegetables,

preparing ingredients and equipment and

being safe in the kitchen. Students have also

utilised our School Garden to learn how fresh

fruit, vegetables and herbs grow as well as

harvesting these to include in our recipes. Well

done to all students showing resilience at try-

ing new foods as well as responsibility by being

safe in the kitchen and always respectful to

peers and adults.

It was a fantastic night had by all and I look forward to seeing everyone in 2020. Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year! Visual Arts Teacher Larnaye Smith
