Principal’s welcomeI’d like to thank you for taking the time to let me introduce Chelsea Independent College to you. In the eleven years since I started work here, I have seen us grow into a leading day and boarding college with a very distinctive and friendly ethos. I’m sure that after reading this prospectus, you will get a sense of how special Chelsea is too.

We get great results, but our aims stretch beyond this. We prize the growth in confidence and curiosity of our students. Our small class sizes facilitate collaborative lessons with students learning their way around their subjects at the same time as they grow as people. We are informal, and flexible, but we put students’ welfare first. Every year, we see how this ‘mindfulness’ leads to lifted hearts and lifted results. We are serious about past paper tests—every week!—so that students can learn from their correct and their incorrect answers. That, alongside our excellent teaching, is at the heart of our A-Level and GCSE strategy.

Chelsea offers a diverse environment. About two-thirds of our students are international, drawn from over forty different countries, and it is truly a pleasure to see people from this country and elsewhere working and socialising together. Some of our students are day pupils, some are boarders; both thrive in our vibrant and welcoming modern buildings. Some are here for high school terms, some for one year, some for two; all are treated in the same way and taught how to develop their strengths and happiness. Our staff are highly qualified in their field, and often, in other professional areas too—we are as much a refuge of barristers, architects, neuroscientists, world-class artists and mathematicians as we are of teaching excellence.

It all combines to make Chelsea Independent College one of the best in London. I hope that, via this prospectus, you will see a little of our enthusiasm, and that it will encourage you to visit us to see what we can do.

Our approach

At Chelsea Independent College our priority is to understand

what motivates and inspires our students. We work in partnership

with them to ensure they achieve their full potential.

We have a strong focus on maximising our students’ performance and academic results. We also help them to understand the full range of university opportunities and to secure their place on their chosen degree.

We achieve this by providing• A specifically tailored teaching programme• A dedicated personal tutor for every student• Small classes; an interactive and engaging

learning environment; individual focus and monitoring of students’ academic progress

• Academic profiling, including Durham University’s ALIS performance predictors

• Regular exam practice with detailed feedback and advice on how to successfully prepare for final examinations, enabling students to express the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the required examination format to maximise the grades achieved.

Examination Practice PapersOur system of Examination Practice Papers (EPPs) gives students the opportunity to sit frequent practice exams using questions from past and practice papers. This regular experience of sitting exams builds confidence and an understanding of the exam process and requirements as well as being crucial to ensuring success in the end-of-year exams. It also offers teachers a chance to keep track of their students’ performance, and to identify any areas which need to be revisited.

Tutor NotesWe believe that time in the classroom should be spent exploring the subject area to gain a true insight and synoptic understanding of the current syllabus. We seek to give students the skills and tools to be able to solve problems as well as preparing them fully for their public examinations.

Students are provided with a full, comprehensive and concise set of notes for each of their subjects throughout the year which correspond to examination specifications that guide students through their learning journey. Our focus is very much on learning. Time in the classroom is focused on active engagement, exploration of the subject area and developing the skills required to succeed. Tutor notes provide our students with an accurate source of information which can be used for reference during the lesson, to read ahead, revisit and revise from.

The regular exam practice and monthly reports push you, so you always want to do better than the last time.

University placement

There are many factors that influence

a student’s success in securing a place

at a leading university.

Whilst proven academic ability is crucial and students must meet the minimum academic and linguistic requirements, universities also look for students who display genuine passion for their chosen subject, a strong desire to learn, who demonstrate great personal maturity and will add to the academic community at their chosen university. At Chelsea Independent College, we prepare students for both academic success and to meet their ambition to gain entry into a top degree course.

We achieve this by providing students with guidance at every stage of their degree and university selection and application. One-to-one UCAS advisory sessions, exceptional teaching and specialist training programmes put students in the best possible position for entry into their desired university, leaving nothing to chance. The College works to maintain close relationships with admissions tutors at many leading universities to understand the qualities they are looking for, and to ensure we know important indicators such as the application-to-place ratios for different universities and degree programmes. For students invited to interview, we provide in-depth interview training including voice projection, body language, background reading and mock interviews with academics from leading universities.

Guidance and support for UCAS preparationWe are proud of our outstanding track record when it comes to helping our students get into the most competitive and respected degree programmes in the country. Our dedicated tutors are on hand to provide expert knowledge, guidance and support with the complex process of making a successful UCAS application. Increasingly this is about much more than just academic grades as universities use a basket of measures in their decision making. The number of early offers is also growing, often driven by good AS-Level results.

Successful UCAS applications need to demonstrate• Exceptional results and predictions,

potentially including GCSE and AS results• Strong performance in specialist assessments

e.g. TSA, UKCAT, BMAT, LNAT and other universities’ own tests

• A clear, concise, convincing and relevant personal statement

• A profound interest in your chosen subject• Relevant experience in non-academic activities

in the workplace and community and understanding of how this improves your skills and knowledge in relation to your chosen degree and profession

• Positive and expertly written references

We will also discuss your chosen subjects and confirm your course timetable the following day.

Your College Education: Each student is assigned a personal tutor. Your tutor will monitor your academic progress and together you will agree your academic goals. Students and tutors meet on a weekly basis giving plenty of opportunity to discuss any issues or concerns. We have an ‘open door’ policy in our staff room, where students are able to find and ask subject teachers specific questions at any time.

The college is welcoming so you don’t need to worry about making new friends. I really like the atmosphere and the international community. You are given independence, which prepares you well for university life.

A British education

A British education aims to inspire and support

you to develop your knowledge and skills, to be

creative and to ensure you achieve your best.

English is the world’s global language with 1 billion speakers and the official language of more than 70 countries. By studying with native speakers you will develop a command of the language that will open doors for you after university. GCSEs and A-Levels are UK universities’ preferred preparation for higher education and have global recognition.

Entrance to the UK's leading universities is about more than just grades. Students need comprehensive support in all aspects of the selection, application and assessment procedures from people who really understand the system and are able to help students fulfil their potential. Statistics show that application to acceptance rates can be over three times higher for those students who have prepared at a UK independent school compared to those applying from overseas.

London – the world’s favourite academic destinationLondon is the number one student city in the English speaking world with more than 400,000 students. There are 40 higher education institutions including 22 universities, 18 feature in the QS World University Rankings with four in the top 40; this is more than any other city. They offer 30,000 degree courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, from accountancy to zoology. Private schools in London have been recognised as the world’s best.

GCSE – Your first step to a university education. These important qualifications provide you with the opportunity to explore and experiment a range of subject areas and inform your decisions on which subjects to study at A-Level and university. Assessment is by coursework and formal examination. You will study 6-8 subjects plus Physical Education, PSHE, Exam Practice and Personal Tutor Sessions depending on the length of your course and your personal study plan.

A-Level – Internationally recognised, academically unmatched A-Levels are the world’s gold standard of university entrance qualifications and are accepted globally. The UK’s elite universities recognise that A-Levels provide an unmatched depth of subject knowledge and the highest grades will provide the option to apply to the very best institutions. Assessment is by coursework and formal examination with students studying 3 or 4 subjects. Where appropriate, our students will be given the opportunity to sit AS Levels in their first year of study, providing external assessment of student performance and enabling students to take advantage of universities’ early acceptance opportunities.

International Foundation YearThe International Foundation Year has been developed specifically to prepare international students for degree entry. You will follow a subject-specific pathway and study 3 related academic subjects plus Academic English. On successful completion of the International Foundation Year our students are guaranteed at least two offers and one place on a respected UK university degree.

Teaching

Academic life at Chelsea Independent College is truly inspiring.

Our goal is to combine an excitement about learning with success in

examinations so that we inspire students for further study at university.

Chelsea Independent College focuses on helping every student to achieve their potential. For some students this might mean a highly academic course of study, whilst for others their preference is for fashion, art or media. The key is to provide students with the support and guidance they need to achieve their own goals.

Our teachers are specialists in their subjects and many are public examiners or published authors. All are experts in their field. Every tutor will do their utmost to help their students enjoy their classes and achieve the highest results possible. There are weekly tests, and plenty of homework, so that what is discussed in class is consolidated through assessment and personal study.

Our students’ ultimate aim is to gain a place on a degree at a university of their choice. We have a dedicated team of staff that give specialist university entrance guidance. Underpinning our academic programme is an exceptional level of pastoral support. We believe this plays an important part in helping our students achieve individual success.

Chelsea Independent College works on the basis of mutual respect between staff and students. We spend a great deal of time getting to know our students and in nurturing them, whatever their particular needs might be.

The department has had fantastic results over

the years. In terms of the teaching, there are

two different ways that you can teach at A-level.

Some people like to teach students to memorize

the rules and the patterns, but what we try to do

here is to teach understanding so that students

know what is happening behind all of the equations.

This has proven to be a very successful method.

University focus is very much

at the centre of this college.

When students arrive in their

AS year, straight away they

are brought into the application

process. We’re visited by major

universities from around the

country who come and

talk to our students about

the UCAS process.

Many of our students go on to art foundation

courses at prestigious universities, but we also

have students who go on to study a wide

variety of degrees such as Architecture,

Animation and Film Studies.

We train our students to think laterally and

to express themselves clearly. We encourage

them to engage with the world and to think

about things, and that’s really what top

universities want.

Chelsea has a relaxed working and learning

environment. The class sizes are small so

students build close relationships with their

teachers. They approach us with a number

of topics whether they are academic or pastoral.

2016DESTINATIONS INCLUDEMy favourite lesson is Further Maths because

the subject is more theory based than normal mathematics; this means that you can really develop an interest in the subject outside of what is required for your exams.

The college was very helpful during the university application process, correcting drafts, giving me advice and generally helping me write my personal statement. The tutors also encouraged me to go to various open days for top ranking universities and see which course and city would suit me best.

I am Head of the Student Council. This is a group of students that have been elected by each class to come together and organise a range of different events for the college. For example, we organised a pink day at the college to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

I really enjoy the extra-curricular activities. I am striker for the college football team, and we won the league for the second time running in two years which is great!

The small class sizes here really benefit me. At my previous school, I was in a class of 30 students and it was easy to get distracted. This is quite reflective in my results: I did really well here with my GCSEs, left to go to a different school and my grades dropped, so I returned to Chelsea. I am already doing better than I was last year and have a greater understanding of my subjects. My psychology teacher is excellent. I really like his teaching style: if you don’t understand something, instead of getting frustrated, he thinks of a different way to explain it.

One of the best things about studying at Chelsea Independent College is the exam preparation. We sit regular exam practice papers under exam conditions.

My favourite subject is Sociology because the teaching I have from Luis is probably the best teaching I’ve ever had. The class size is only ten people compared to the class of thirty people at my previous school, which makes learning much easier. The class is such a social forum so that we learn from the debates we have and from other people rather than just learning from a book.

Andrew PorterA-Levels: AAB

Sam Tudor-TaylorA-LevelsMy favourite subject at college

is Art because, unlike many other subjects, it allows students to fully express themselves. Also it is one of the subjects that my university requires to allow me access to the course I want to study.

I have applied to a number of different universities in the UK to study architecture and I am hoping to achieve a place at The Architectural Association School of Architecture for my degree.

I am really enjoying my time at Chelsea. The environment here is so much better than at my previous school. I was at an all girls’ school which was very strict and had a very regimented teaching style, whereas at Chelsea you are treated as an adult and given a lot more independence. This really helps me with my learning as I am given the freedom to work in the way that suits me best, but know that I always have the support of my teachers. The college facilities are very good; the science labs have everything that you could ever need.

Gurkiran KalsiA-Levels

I really like the environment at Chelsea. It is very different to most secondary schools as it takes more of a university style approach to learning, where you are very much supported but also trusted to get on with your own studies.

The class sizes are a lot smaller than they were at my previous school so you get a lot more individual help. If I ever need any extra support outside of class, I can ask my teachers to help me during my lunch breaks or after school, and they are always happy to do so.

Chelsea has an individual approach with small class sizes, a great focus on academic studies and a very cosy atmosphere. No uniform and calling teachers by their first names helped me feel at home here.

I received a lot of support and guidance from all teachers, including the Head of Sixth Form who helped me with my university choices and UCAS application. Weekly meetings with my personal tutor helped me to stay on top of my schoolwork and keep up to date about college events.

A-Levels are the most highly regarded qualifications by universities in the UK and are recognised by institutions world-wide. Chelsea Independent College, with its outstanding A-Level results year upon year, is the ideal place for you to embark on your sixth-form career.

At Chelsea Independent College, we aim to provide excellence in education in a supportive and collaborative environment. We pride ourselves on our unmatched understanding of the ongoing curriculum and assessment developments, particularly the reforms introduced from September 2015 to ensure that our teaching remains first-class.

Guidance on subject choiceWe offer a broad range of A-Level subjects and professional guidance on suitable study plans to meet our students’ aims and objectives. AcademicEnglish

A high level of English is required to achieve top exam results and for entry to university in the UK. It also allows you to enjoy more social activities, make friends and understand UK culture.

As an international student attending Chelsea Independent College alongside British students, we aim to develop your language ability to near native levels so that you have the opportunity to flourish in both an academic and social context.

You must be able to demonstrate a level of English appropriate to your academic programme in order to commence your studies. Before you begin your chosen academic course, you will sit an English language assessment (unless you already possess a recognised English language qualification at the appropriate level). A-Level applicants who require further support and development will be guided to our 3-term Pre A-Level programme.

Complement and support your academic studyAt Chelsea Independent College we believe it is important that you study English alongside your academic subjects and not in isolation. Learning a language to the standard required by the most prestigious universities takes time and cannot be rushed. If required, you will receive 5 hours of English tuition every week throughout your studies. These lessons will also cover revision and exam techniques to help you succeed in your IELTS examination.

Pre A-Level ProgrammeThese programmes provide students with the opportunity to develop their Academic English ahead of their full time academic studies. Students are given support in communication and academic language, helped to work on their study skills, and have the opportunity to adapt to studying in the UK. This pathway programme also allows for students to learn in the context of subject-based lessons, rather than just EFL ones.

Highly qualified teachersThroughout the course, you will be taught by professional and fully-qualified teachers who have extensive experience of teaching English to international students and preparing them for IELTS examinations.

A complete language programmeIn addition to developing language systems (vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation) you will develop your Academic English in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. You will receive daily homework and sit regular tests to assess your progress and identify areas for further development.

An immersive approachYou will be encouraged to read widely, listen to English-speaking media and, of course, speak English as much as possible inside and outside the class. You may be given the opportunity to join academic classes in a range of subject areas. You will take part in trips, activities and social events and there will be visits by guest speakers.

I would recommend the English programme because it will help you to learn everything else. In my last school we just watched the lessons, but here we discuss topics in class with the teachers.

Medicalcourses

Oxbridge

Applying to medical school in the UK is extremely competitive with only 40% of candidates gaining places every year and the statistics can be even more challenging for international students. Many students who are rejected have excellent grades and compelling personal statements, so what’s the secret in putting in a successful application and winning one of those most coveted places?

Chelsea Independent College knows that it pays to be thoroughly prepared. From presenting a compelling personal statement, impressing at interview to advice on finding work placement opportunities, our Medical Programme aims to cover everything prospective students need to know to secure their place at medical school.

The academic focus at Chelsea is one of its most defining features of our Medical Programme. Tutors teach exactly to the syllabus and train all our potential Medical, Dental and Veterinary students with practice on and forensic analysis of past papers. Each student is monitored very closely to ensure they have in depth understanding of all the topics and question formats so that they achieve the A*/A grades they require for entry to Medical and Dental courses at University.

The college also offers UKCAT and BMAT training courses during half term in the autumn term. These cover essential elements of the tests, like logic and verbal reasoning, and offer training in writing essays on ethical issues.

Guest Speaker events provide an invaluable chance to hear from top practitioners in the medical field and are offered alongside medical interview practice.

Over 30,000 students apply to Oxford and Cambridge every year. The admissions process can be daunting and with an average of five students competing for every place, there is no guarantee of success even for the brightest.

These elite universities seek the most able and best qualified students from every background and every part of the world. Admissions decisions are based on students’ ability, commitment and their potential to achieve. The undergraduate degree courses offered by these universities are highly academic and are not necessarily appropriate for all students as they rely on a high degree of self-study.

Interviews for undergraduate places are just one part of a very rigorous selection process, where academic ability and potential are assessed through a range of measures: at least two interviews; aptitude tests; written work; predicted grades; attained grades; and references.

Oxbridge entry is a highly competitive process, and students will be given an honest appraisal of their chances of success. Whilst all students who wish to apply will be considered, it is important to appreciate that the application process is fiercely competitive.

If you are identified as having the potential to succeed at this highest academic level, our tutors will ensure you are thoroughly mentored to maximise your chances of success. All staff involved in this programme are experts on Oxbridge preparation and are highly qualified subject specialists.

Students on the Chelsea Medical Programme are also given a great deal of guidance and support when writing a personal statement, choosing the right medical school, and identifying related work experience. Students have a dedicated Medical tutor, developing their scientific reasoning, medical knowledge and ethical debating skills. Our staff assist students over each hurdle of getting into medical school. This includes UCAS, interview training, keeping up to date in current affairs in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary, and BMAT or UKCAT courses.

Our outstanding record of success in getting our students into medical school is testament to the effectiveness of our Medical Programme.

I have applied for medical schools. The application process can be complicated as there is an interview as well as the entrance exam. The College has helped me practice both to make me more confident. It was good to become comfortable in the interview environment before the real thing.

Easter revision

courses

Academic Summer

Easter is a crucial period for many students. It is at this time, with examinations in sight, that they often need the most support. An Easter Revision course helps to give students an improved subject knowledge and the confidence that they need to achieve their full academic potential in the ensuing summer examinations.

The Chelsea Easter Revision course provides a systematic approach to revision which, in turn, gives students the motivation and support that they need.

The Objectives Our Easter Revision courses are designed to improve a student’s performance by focusing on five key aspects of exam preparation: • Consolidating knowledge and understanding • Planning a successful approach to revision • Developing and sustaining confidence • Employing effective examination technique • Working out a personal revision programme

for the run-up to the exams

All students receive an outline of the specification they are studying and a full set of examination papers with accompanying model answers. Throughout the course students will be set examination questions. Examination questions are marked with tutor commentary on how improvements can be made. Each course culminates in an examination session.

The Academic Summer Courses at Chelsea Independent College offer you the opportunity to explore your favourite subjects in more depth, improve your English and gain an insight into your chosen career field. You will experience what it is like to study at one of the UK’s leading independent colleges, where our expert teachers will assess your potential and advise you on your options for the future.

You will be taught in small groups in a relaxed and collaborative environment, meet leading professionals and take part in interactive workshops and seminars.

At the same time you will have fun exploring this great and most international of cities and visit some of London’s incredible cultural and commercial attractions with other students from around the world.

• Art & Design • Business & Finance• Engineering & IT• Law, Politics & International Relations• Medicine

Study OptionsStudents can study an individual AS, A2 or GCSE subject intensively for 20 hours per week during either the mornings or afternoons. If you wish to combine two subjects or revise for a full A level (AS & A2) you will study for 40 hours per week during both the mornings and afternoons.

The Chelsea summer school is extremely good! I really enjoyed both activities and studies. I would be really glad to come here again next year.

I really enjoyed the Politics lessons. We learnt about many different beliefs and ideologies from a variety of perspectives. The visit to the Old Bailey was a real highlight.

I would never have achieved my GCSE grades without my revision course at Chelsea. The teachers focused on the key topics I needed help with and worked with me to improve my exam technique.
