FAX Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph’s College, Last Sunday saw the celebration of our third Youth Mass for the year. It was so nice to see a large number of staff and students come together to celebrate the Eucharist on a rather cold and overcast Sunday evening. I strongly recommend that as a family, you earmark these Sundays (the last one of each month except in the holidays) as a time to come together in community with those from our parish schools. The words of Pope Francis will hopefully influence more members of our SJC community to be involved: “Every celebration of the Eucharist is a ray of light of the unsetting sun that is the Risen Jesus Christ. To participate in Mass, especially on Sunday, means entering in the victory of the Risen, being illuminated by his light, warmed by his warmth.” YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP CAMP Our Year 11 students are lucky enough to be attending their Leadership Camp next week at Moogerah Dam. I know the area well having dabbled in the field of outdoor education during my university years. All the best to our students and I thank all families for financially supporting the College to ensure this important event is a success. ELECTIVE FEES We understand that choosing to send your child to St Joseph’s College comes with a substantial financial commitment. We thank families for making this commitment and for contacting the Parish Office if problems arise. Elective fees, however, are billed by the College and are in addition to school fees. Please be aware that the payment of elective fees, which commence from Year 9, is a compulsory payment. These bills are emailed in the first half of Term 1 and failure to pay these will unfortunately result in students being rendered ineligible to attend excursions, trips, sporting events or other such activities. The following is an extract from the Parish Schools Office Terms and Conditions of Enrolment: 9. Families are reminded that students may be ineligible to attend trips/excursion (overseas and domestic) unless fees are paid in full or a satisfactory arrangement established with the Parish School Office prior to the application to attend the trip. This includes fees owing direct to the school. It was brought to our attention this year that some of the emails did not reach families due to a number of reasons. We will ensure that from next year, a follow- up text will also be sent alerting families that the elective fees have been sent. UNIFORM - JUMPERS

We have seen a major improvement in the wearing of school jumpers in the last two weeks. I thank students and families for supporting this. The only acceptable jumpers to be worn are the College maroon woollen jumper, our College spray jacket or for your Year 12 students, the senior jersey. Regardless of any College trips students may have attended and, as part of the trip, purchased a jumper bearing the College’s logo, they are not acceptable at school. We have a large number of donated jumpers in stock for those who currently are finding it difficult to purchase a jumper. If your child is in this situation, could you please contact the relevant Year Coordinator and they will organise to get a jumper to the student.

SJC PARENT GROUP A fortnight (no, NOT Fortnite; I know it is big but you won’t find me speaking about it) ago, our SJC Parent Group met for the second time this year and were presented to by Kirra Pendergast. Kirra provided a wealth of insight into the benefits and pitfalls of our digital world. She has very generously shared her resources and these will be included in our newsletters. If your child is in Year 8, 9 or 10, please ask them about the presentation. Kirra will be back to present to our Year 7 students in the near future. Monday 18 June will see our second meeting for the term. This will be held in the staff common room and commence at 6:30pm. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAM As mentioned previously, our College is working through a programme this year that examines culture and looks to make improvements where required. Part of this programme involves the election of a School Improvement Team comprising of seven staff members (including myself). This group will gather the voice of staff, students and parents, as well as analyse data and anecdotal evidence to identify key areas of improvement. We wish them all the best and look forward to see the results of their efforts across the next twelve months.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL This Friday, 8 June, we will be holding our Annual Athletics Carnival. Please note that attendance at this event is compulsory. Ms Parker, our Sports Coordinator, has a programme of events for the day that will include ‘something for everyone’, no matter what your level of skill may be. Please note that in the event of rain, we will have normal lessons from Day 5 of the timetable. As is normal practice in the event of a student’s absence, parents/ caregivers are to respond promptly to the SMS and no later than 3:00pm that day. Where no response - or an inadequate response - is received, the absence will be deemed an unjustified absence and will appear that way on the student’s attendance record.

STAFF SPIRITUALITY DAY – TUESDAY 12 JUNE A reminder that Tuesday of next week, 12 June, is a pupil-free day as all staff will be attending a spirituality day off-campus. Classes will resume on Wednesday. Kind regards Mr Scott Thomson ([email protected])

“ “

Mark 12:28-34

One of the scribes came near and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher; you have truly said that ‘he is one, and besides him there is no other’; and ‘to love him with all the heart, and with all the under-standing, and with all the strength,’ and ‘to love one’s neighbour as oneself,’—this is much more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” After that no one dared to ask him any question.

I, too, often ask myself, what is the first commandment of all? Which is the most important of my many obligations? Today, like the scribe, I ask Jesus to enlighten me with the answer to this vital question. I allow myself to be impressed by Jesus’ clear answer: love. It is the most important thing I can ever do; it includes all my duties and all the commandments.

Jesus tells me to love others as I love myself Do I feel called to love myself as I am? Or do I feel guilty when I try to do so, feeling that I am being selfish? Jesus seems to imply the contrary; I will not be able to love others unless I love myself.

Forgiveness as Spiritual Practice

Even when we understand that forgiveness is essential to our health and happiness, it’s still a challenge to forgive. My friend Rachael admits that, even after accepting an apology, she often continues to hold onto the injury and negative feelings.

“It is very difficult for me to forgive, and I’m not happy or proud about that,” Rachael says. “I completely believe that forgiveness is the best way to go. But apparently, my head knows things my heart cannot accomplish.” Rachael understands forgiveness as a spiritual practice: “We’re supposed to forgive one another ‘seventy times seven,’ and that is just the beginning of how much God forgives us. We need to offer that soul-clearing forgiveness to others.”

You know how difficult feats look simple when professionals perform them? Think of Olympic figure skaters leaping and gliding over the ice, or Yo-Yo Ma playing the cello. They’re so graceful, so joyful. Bur what we never see is how many times the skaters have fallen or how many times a much less experienced Yo-Yo Ma messed up.

Like so many spiritual practices, we have to work at forgiveness to get better at it. -Jennifer Gram, Wholehearted Living

Your heart is a muscle and needs exercise to help keep it fit. Similarly, our spiritual life needs us to exercise an ‘open heart’ attitude to others. To have a forgiving heart is to know true peace. Conversely, to harden your heart against someone else is to harden your heart to God’s message given to us by Jesus: And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love (1 Corinthians 13:13). If someone seeks your forgiveness, give it to them freely because the cost to you both is too great. It doesn’t mean you’re a doormat, rather, it shows a heart open to God. It also means that you can move past that event and that you can live in peace too. And if you can’t easily imagine forgiving someone else, why would you think that you yourself haven’t been forgiven when you needed to be? God already has. A little while ago, Year 12 travelled out to Tyalgum Ridge Retreat to go on Year 12 retreat. We had a great view of Mount Warning and over three days we did single, partner and group activities that allowed us to become closer to our peers and teachers and gain a deeper understanding of what makes us who they are. We were able to do a number of activities including a flying fox, a scenic walk up the mountain to see a waterfall and visiting the many animals that were on the property. There were many laughs and we were grateful to have the chance to spend some time away from school with our friends. Year 12 also got to further explore our theme for this year of ‘Live Life to the Full’, and we have come back from Retreat rested and ready to enjoy our last few months of school. On behalf of everyone in Year 12 we would like to say thank you to Mr McDermott and Mrs Joseph who did a lot of behind the scenes work to make Retreat happen for us, as well as Mr Davoren our Year Coordinator who provides us with constant support, and also to all the other staff members who came along to retreat and made it a great experience for us all. Thank you. Chloe Dunemann Year 12

As part of our digital imaging unit we have been learning to use Photoshop to manipulate existing images into something new and creative. The assessment task was to create a Cartoon Poster using images of their favourite cartoon characters as well as an image of themselves. We have also learned about Colour Depth, Pixels, Bitmap images and how to calculate the file size of an image. I've been really impressed with how hard the class has worked so far this year, and I hope you enjoy looking at some of their work. Mr Dean Robinson Industrial Technology Multimedia Teacher

FRENCH NEWS - LANGUAGE PERFECT 2018

Each year, we enrol our Language students into this online competition, held from Monday 21-31 May. In class and at home, students have revised and expanded their vocabulary, created sentences and answered nearly 500,000 questions. We have achieved the highest status of ELITE level (more than 10,000 points) for two students who have been in a constant challenge since the start (Leevan is in Year 8 and Tanesha is in Year 10). They along with all students are gaining insights into the patterns and structures of the French language as well as revising their own spelling in English and the intercultural inferences between other languages such as Spanish, German, Italian and even Latin. We are the Lismore Diocesan Champions and the scoresheet has our school in the top 5 in NSW and well placed globally. Bravo and Congratulations to all! All Year 9 and Year 10 French elective students have reached certificate rewards. Certificates for Credit, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Emerald and Elite will arrive when printed in New Zealand and will be presented to those great achievers. SJC ALL STARS!

Earlier in the year, the current Year 12 students who accelerated in 2 Unit Mathematics or 2 Unit Biology last year, celebrated with a Pizza Lunch after their successful completion of their subject. The acceleration process starts when students are in Year 9 where they complete both Year 9 and Year 10 coursework in that year. They then study a Year 11 subject whilst in Year 10 and the processes completes with students sitting their HSC exam in their accelerated subject whilst in Year 11. This is an awesome achievement and we are proud of all our accelerated students. Mr Matt Hall Leader of Learning - Science

THIS FRIDAY, 8 JUNE 2018

On 22 May, twenty-one students from SJC travelled to McAuley College in Grafton to represent the College in the Diocesan Cross Country. It was a beautiful day out, however, this did not make things easier for those competing when out on the tough course. The course saw students running through the undulating paddocks of a neighbouring property, dodging mountains of cow poo and a mob of kangaroos that weren’t to be deterred by the multitudes of students running through their territory!

Students were faced with an exceptional calibre of competitors from other schools across the Diocese, and all rose to the challenge. Congratulations to Hayden Pirlo in Year 8 who came 5th and now proceeds to NSWCCC in Sydney later this term.

Well done to both the boys and girls Soccer teams who travelled to Coffs Harbour on Tuesday 29 May for the Lismore Diocesan Soccer Carnival. Despite an early 4:00am start and a four-hour bus trip, students arrived enthusiastic and ready to play. Both teams produced a mixed bag of results, however in true SJC style, consistently displayed sportsmanship and a ‘never give up’ attitude. Well done guys!

Congratulations to Sam Clohesy (Year 9) who was selected in the Queensland Under-16 state representative squad that will travel to Sydney next weekend for the NAB Under-16 National Championships.

The team was selected following the State Under-16 Championships played at Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex from April 29 to May 7 and a final hit-out against the Brisbane Lions Under-17 Academy team on May 30. Overall, it was an encouraging and exciting start for the side but made selection into the state team an even harder task.

The squad will travel to Sydney next weekend to play against Tasmania, and will continue to train over the next few weeks before a final 23 players will be announced for the round two and three games of the NAB National U16 Championships on the Gold Coast in early July.

Do you ever find yourself procrastinating?

You mean to start work on an assignment, but you just keep putting it off until it ends up being a mad rush the night before it is due. The Overcoming Procrastination unit at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au looks at the reasons why students procrastinate and what techniques they can try to overcome this common problem. Setting work targets with rewards at the end of each completed step is a well-known strategy, but an example of a less commonly known technique is the ‘two-fer’ concept. For this technique you have two tasks, one you don’t mind doing and one you have been procrastinating about. Decide on a set period of time that you will work for. During this time, if you have any trouble working on one task or reach a point where you have a bit of a mental blank, you should then switch to the other task and alternate between them. Of course it is better to focus solely on one task but if this isn’t working by alternating between two tasks at least you are being productive for the whole period of time and forcing yourself to do some work on the less favoured task. You might also like to visit the Assignment Skills unit at www.studyskillshandbook. com.au for some more ideas on approaching assignments. Our school’s subscription details are:

Headspace has collaborated with Netflix to develop supporting resources and discussion guides for young people, parents and schools which were made available upon the show’s launch (Friday, May 18). Headspace has created a blog post on the Headspace website which provides young people and parents with information including:

tips for discussing the show safely,

points to consider before watching the show.

questions to help start a conversation You can access the blog post here: https://headspace.org.au/news/the-launch-of-13-reasons-why-season-2/ Further to this, eheadspace will be holding group chat sessions for young people on Thursday May 24 from 7-8pm AEST and Sunday May 27 from 7-8pm AEST. You can access the group chat sessions here: https://www.eheadspace.org.au/get-help/eheadspace-group-chat-session/ Finally, we would like to inform you that a range of measures have been put in place with Netflix to assist with safely launching Season 2 of the series. This includes:

A designated webpage www.13reasonswhy.info/ where resources and help seeking information will be provided.

Inclusion of warnings and help-seeking information before, and at the end, of each episode of the show. The end frame directs users back to www.13reasonswhy.info/

On the webpage you will find: - Videos - One will feature the cast of the show (coming out of character) to

address issues depicted in the show, and the other features Australian young people talking about the importance of reaching out to family and friends and seeking help on mental health issues.

- Resources – Tailored discussion guides for young people, parents and schools - Help seeking information - Detailed help seeking information for young people.

It is important to note that 13 Reasons Why, Season 2 is rated MA15+ in Australia, therefore the resources have been developed for secondary schools, parents and secondary school aged young people. The resources are designed to promote help seeking and support having conversations with an individual young person and are not intended to be used for large groups or for classroom lessons. Please contact your local Headspace site if you require any further support.

13 Reasons Why was one of the most talked about series streamed on Netflix Australia last year, quickly cementing itself as a cult hit—especially with young people. It comes as no surprise, as young people find it easy to connect with a compelling and suspenseful story. We need to be aware that popular media portrayal of these complex issues can be taken out of context and may pose risks for young people that are vulnerable, impulsive, or have been experiencing issues with mental health and distress. For these reasons, it is important that young people are not only aware of serious issues such as self-harm and suicide, but also that parents check in and keep the lines of communication open. It is no secret that the release of 13 Reasons Why sparked concerns from mental health experts in Australia, and around the globe. If you haven’t had a chance to watch the series yourself, the story centres on a female teenage suicide and her “13 reasons” for doing so. Headspace do an excellent job at explaining why these portrayals can cause serious impact on vulnerable young people—extensive exposure to this type of content in popular media can not only lead to a potential contagion effect but can also cause desensitisation to the severity and finality of suicide. It was these concerns that propelled me to reach out to Netflix last year in Washington, D.C. to open up a conversation about the crucial role we can all play in creating a safe and supportive environment for young people, especially those that are vulnerable. Being new territory for Netflix, I was encouraged to see their team jump on board and collaborate with leading Australian mental health organisations Headspace and Everymind, to develop support materials for young people to access once season 2 of 13 Reasons Why airs in Australia. Should negative emotions be triggered, by either viewing the series or negative conversations at school, work, or within the media, the resources offer guidance and support to young people, detailing where to go for help and actions that can be taken. With Season 2 of 13 Reasons Why now on Netflix Australia, we encourage parents, carers and teachers to have a look at the resources, available at http://www.13reasonswhy.info, familiarise yourself with them and share them with your children and anyone else within your community. It is important that we, as parents, carers and educators, are engaged with our children and keep the lines of communication open. Even if your child is unlikely to watch the show, they might be able to offer support to a friend at school that they may be worried about. While there is no panacea for protecting young people from harmful online content, as the national coordinating online safety body, we will continue our efforts to engage and encourage industry to offer better safety approaches and safeguards to protect our young people. When it comes to mental health, Australia is truly world-leading. For Australians in need of psychological support, help with online issues such as exposure to harmful online content, there are a range of mental health services and online safety organisations that can assist. Contact ReachOut, Kids Helpline, Lifeline or visit our Online Wellbeing Directory for guidance and support. Julie Inman Grant - eSafety Commissioner
