Principal’s Message
Happy New Year to All Argyle Families! I hope that you had a safe and restful holiday. As we head into January and February, things continue to be busy at Argyle. Please read the newspaper and consult the school calendar to ensure you are up to date on the latest events happening at the school. Once again, this year, we will be offering an elective program for the Grade 1-8 students. We had such positive feedback on this program, that we wanted to offer it again. Electives will be held on the four Wednesday afternoons in February (Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27). The Junior/Intermediate (Grade 3-8) students have received a "choice sheet" on which they selected an elective of their choice. Primary students (Grade 1/2) will be involved in different electives each week. There will be a letter coming home to those students explaining what will be happening each week. If you have any questions around electives, please contact the school. Another important event that is happening during the winter months, is Public Speaking, which is always a popular event with the students as it helps students undertake public speaking and gain confidence and self esteem. You will be receiving information about this as well in the near future. As we continue to head into the winter months, we may be faced with more "snow days" on which buses do not run. Please know, that on such days, the school is still open and students are still being offered programming and it is sometimes a great opportunity to get some extra support from staff. Those students who do not attend, may receive school work from their teachers if they wish. Hope that you enjoy a busy January/February! If there are any questions, please contact me. Sincerely, Jim Burrows
Piano Class at Argyle
By Cadence G. - Gr. 8
Piano class is going great so far here at Argyle. Mr. Laframboise is teaching the students
lots, like which notes are which and the correct posture for piano playing, and more
advanced students are learning songs and expression. I’m learning so much from these
lessons and I know others are too! A piano recital for the students is in the making and
may happen sometime in the spring, so watch out for that if you’re interested.

Pick-up at dismissal time:
Thank you for calling the school to inform us of any changes to bus/pick-up details. Please connect with staff, before leaving with your child.
Drop-off during inclement weather:
In rainy or cold (approx. below -21C) weather, students remain indoors before school and during recess. If you drop your child off in the morning and a staff member is not at the drop-off area, that means that all buses have arrived and the person on duty is supervising students in the school. In this case, please report to the office with your child.
Pick-up on an inclement weather day (“Snow Day”):
When you pick up your child, please meet staff and students in the main foyer. Ensure that you have connected with the staff member on duty.
Thank you for your attention to these student pick up and drop off details!
Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Competition
Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019
Students will be competing in the RCL Public Speaking
Competition. All students in Grades 1-8 will be participating. Members of
the Royal Canadian Legion will be judging the speeches. Winners in each
category will be invited to participate in another competition at the Zone
Level.
The schedule for the day is as follows:
9:15-10:20 Grades 1-6
10:20-11:00 Break
11:10-12:40 Grades 7 & 8
Please note: These times are approximate. When a division has
completed their competition, the next division will begin.
Students will have the opportunity to listen to the presentations made by
their classmates. Parents, family members and community members are
invited to attend part of, or all, of our competition. We look forward to
seeing you at Argyle Public School.
We ask that onlookers do not move in and out of the gym while students
are speaking. Thank you for your consideration.
Christmas Activities
By Stacey W. - Gr. 8 Once again, Christmas time was busy at Argyle with many events. First, our Christmas Concert that was held on Dec 18th was another success. Every student participated and there were some great performances. Each class performed a short play in the Gym for the audience. Everyone had a great time.
Once the play had started, Mrs. Booth and some volunteers drew the names of the Christmas Basket Raffle winners. Tickets were one dollar each and they were available for the month of December leading up to the concert. Thanks to all of the people who donated prizes for the baskets. Once the names were drawn, Mrs. Booth put their names on a poster and after the play, people could look to see if they had won. The last week of December, a few days before the concert, we had some fun activities. For example, we had Christmas Centers such as a craft center with Mr. Holotuk, a bingo center with Mrs. Cudmore and lots more. We had a great time in December with the concert, the draw, and the special Christmas activities.
Sports
By Chase W. - Gr. 6
In the beginning of this year, Argyle received some floor hockey goalie equipment, that
was a donation from the Argyle Lion’s Club for the students to use in the gym.
On January 18th the Grade 5 and 6 classes went to Almaguin Highlands
Secondary School for a Volleyball Tournament. We all had fun!
The Grade 6/7/8 class will be playing basketball:
January 30th at Mapleridge
February 25th at Land of Lakes
With the final tournament being at A.H.S.S. on March 7th, 2019.
Tim Horton’s Camp
By Zachary M. - Gr. 8
Once again this year, the Grade 7 students at Argyle are lucky to be invited to the Tim
Hortons Camp. This camp is free for all students and is open to other Grade 7 students
in our area. Thanks to Mr. Brear for accompanying the students on this four day
excursion.
Students take part in leadership activities and cooperative games and meet students from other schools.
They learn about teamwork, compassion and respect. The students get to attend two times in the school
year. The first visit was from Oct. 9-12.
I interviewed Liam Panay, one of the Grade 7 students who attended and he described the experience as
"the most fun I have ever had at school"!! The group will go back to the camp on March 26-29. I am certain
they will have another great time! We are looking forward to hearing about their second visit.
Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Contest
By Lily P. - Gr. 8 On Thursday February seventh Argyle will be holding our annual public speaking. At
nine-fifteen we will start the speeches in the gymnasium. The Legion will be coming to
judge our speeches. If they like it enough, you could win money! The speeches will be
held throughout the day. I spoke to some of my classmates and asked them what they
will be speaking about. Marissa R. is speaking about Trypoohbia, Cadence G. will be
speaking about authorial distance, Tasha R. will tell us about the amazing butterfly effect, with myself
speaking out about the LGBTQ+ community. I hope everyone has a great time speaking and writing their
speeches.
Electives
By Landon H. - Gr. 8
This year we are going to be having our electives again in February. They will be every
Wednesday afternoon. There are many electives that the school is offering, and they are,
swimming at the airbase, downhill skiing and snowboarding at Laurentian Ski Hill, Skidoo
License Course at South Shore, martial arts at South Shore, cooking at Argyle and arts and
crafts at Argyle. We hope that everyone participates in these fun activities and we hope
everyone has fun. Students have filled out choice sheets where they pick the elective that they would like
to participate in. More information to follow, if you have any questions contact Mr. Burrows at the school.
