Term 3, Weeks 9-10

Inaugarul Aboriginal Flag Raising Ceremony at AVPSOn Thursday September 20th Angle Vale PS community were proud to celebrate the inaugural Aboriginal Flag Raising ceremony. In attendance were all of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait students and their families, our SGC reps from each class as well as Leadership staff.

Melissa Babic introduced Jay to open the ceremony with the Kaurna Welcoming. This was followed by Aboriginal students talking about the history of the Aboriginal flag which had been first flown in Victoria Square Adelaide in July 1971. The students involved in this presentation were Jay, Kelsi, Shikira, Chloe, Shaquan, Marlee and Bella.

Lisa Francis was honoured to raise the Aboriginal flag while we sang Jessica Mauboy’s version of I am Australian. This song added emotion to the ceremony, especially when everyone joined in with the chorus “I am, you are, we are Australian” and all eyes were on the flag as it was raised.

Melissa spoke briefly about the process over the last 3 years for this special occasion to eventuate and gave mention of Lisa and Maxine’s contribution to their roles as ACEO and AET in supporting our Aboriginal students’ education.

The SGC reps from every class in the school took information about the Aboriginal flag back to share with their classes, and photos of the ceremony with Jessica Mauboy’s song were shared with all classes as well.

New Aboriginal Mural at Angle Vale Primary SchoolBy now everyone would have seen the new Aboriginal Art Mural on the northern wall of the Acacia building at AVPS.

The SGC instigated and financed this project under the guidance of Jo Sachse, Melissa Babic and Lisa Francis. They discussed the possibility of contacting Scott Rathman from “Rusted Tin Contemporary Art” to implement this project. Scott Rathman was able to paint this the amazing mural in Week 2 of this term.

This beautiful mural reflects the many learning journeys taken to this place of learning, with young and old meeting in the middle and sharing and learning together.

A plaque will be added to the wall to explain the meaning of this mural.

Many thanks to the SGC for their role in instigating this project, and to the talented artist Scott Rathman from “Rusted Tin Contemporary Art” for this amazing mural. This mural has lifted an ordinary wall into a beautiful feature wall.

M1 - PoetryIn M1 we have been learning about Poetry this Term. We have experimented with water colour paints to create a spooooooky haunted house. We then used this as inspiration to write some poems about our haunted houses. These are some snippets of what we created.

Sports Report

C4 Retirement Village Guide Dogs visit

SAPSASA Sports The past three terms have been extremely busy especially for SAPSASA. In Term 1 we had SAPSASA district swimming while during Term 2 we had the Winter Carnival, District Basketball Carnival and Knockout Sports (Netball and Soccer). During this time we have also had students that have represented the Playford District in both Football and Soccer.

Knockout Sports Term 2 saw the beginning of our knockout sport competitions. Students that trialled and that were selected competed in Netball, Boys’ Soccer or Girls’ Soccer. The netball team played very well against Gawler East Primary in the first round at South Gawler Netball Club but were unable to advance to the second round. The boys’ soccer team did a fantastic job but were knocked out early this term in their 4th match against St Columba College while the girls who also played were narrowly knocked out in their second match against John Hartley school.

Results:

Girls’ Netball: Round 1- AVPS defeated by GEPS 10-35

Boys’ Soccer: Round 1- AVPS Year 7’s defeated AVPS Year 6’s Round 2 - AVPS defeated Gawler East Primary School 3-2 Round 3 - AVPS defeated Elizabeth North 4-2 Round 4 - AVPS defeated by St Columba College 1-6

Girls’ Soccer: Round 1- AVPS defeated Gawler East Primary School 4-3 Round 2- AVPS defeated by John Hartley 1-4.

District Sport This year in District Sport we have had 3 students represent Playford at their respective sports. Harry for swimming and football, Shaquan for football and Jaylah for soccer. Congratulations to these students who have represented the District brilliantly and displayed exceptional sporting skill in order to be selected for these teams. Special congratulations must go to Harry for his performance in the district swimming carnival during Term 1. Harry competed in 4 events in total and medalled in all of his individual events. He was even able to record his first Gold at this particular carnival in the 100m freestyle. It was fantastic to see Harry swim and shows the amount of hard work and determination that he puts into his swimming.

Local Sport In local sport we would also like to congratulate Shaquan for winning the association medal for the Angle Vale Owls Football club for the second consecutive year. Shaquan won the under 12’s Division 2 SANFL juniors medal after polling 29 points. Well done Shaquan on another extraordinary achievement in your young football career.

In Term 3 students from C4 (Jess and Mr Mazzaferro’s class) visited the Angle Vale Gardens Retirement Estate. This was a fantastic learning opportunity. Students were given a presentation from The Royal Society for the Blind (RSB) about the role of Guide Dogs in our community.

What students learned: • Guide Dogs are retired after about 20 years • Guide Dogs always walk on a person’s left side • Guide Dogs are welcomed into restaurants and public transport • Guide Dogs are given a special blanket when going to live with a client- the blanket smells like the pup’s mother • Guide Dogs are amazing creatures who help people that are vision impaired

Students were very well behaved and we are welcome to visit the Retirement Village again for future events.

AVPS Family Fun Night StallExpression of Interest Form

DUE FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9th 2018

This form enables community stall holders to express an interest in selling products at the Angle Vale Primary School Family Fun Night. It is not a confirmation until processed and accepted by the Committee. This is to enable a good variety of stalls and to organise the logistics of the event.

Stall holders will be selected on a first come, first served basis provided the products do not cause a conflict of interest with other stall holders, including class stalls.

Potential stall holders will be contacted one week prior to the event. If successful, a $20 payment will be due to the Front Office before the night. All other proceeds may be kept by the stall holder, or if desired, donated to the school.

Please return the completed details to the Front Office no later than Friday, 9th November. We will be in touch with you to confirm by November 15th.

Thank you,

Family Fun Night Committee
