A RICH EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE ATTHORNBURY HIGH

Last Friday when I was reflecting on a very busy day withsome of the staff at the school, I was impressed by therange of rich experiences and interesting activities thatstudents at the school are exposed to on almost a dailybasis.

My day started with a discussion with some of ourstudents who had received distinctions (top 10% in thecountry) and credits in the Australian Maths Competition. This competition, although very challenging, provides auseful yard stick against which to measure the quality ofour maths students. (24 student across years 7-12 receivedawards)

During period 1, I visited one of our year 7 classes thatwas doing a workshop with visiting author, Luke CJackson. It was great to see all students engaged in adiscussion about writing and I am sure this activity willhave lots of spin offs for their future writing tasks in class.

I then used our school bus to transport six students fromPreston South PS to ‘Children’s TV’ in the city. The engagement of the students in their learning and their tremendous sense of achievement are the rewards all teachers cherish. Peter Egeberg Principal THORNBURY HIGH STUDENTS WIN THE RACV TRANSMISSION COMPETITION The VCAL creative team continue their amazing progression through the RACV/Channel 7 Transmission Program – a competition whereby students pitch a concept for a Road Safety television advertisement. They started by researching the topic ‘Peer Pressure’ as a Road Safety issue. A PowerPoint presentation was developed to support their impressive Story Board poster. Their ‘Do you follow your mates like sheep?’ concept steered the team into the FINALS!! Our team was one of only 4 metropolitan Melbourne Schools to pitch their concept to the Channel 7 creative production team, the RACV and creative professionals from Melbourne advertising agencies. Congratulations to John Parcevski, Stacey Fuller, Nick Vasiliadis, Gavin Lovelace, Jamie Richey and Jess Liquorish.

My target is to have at least two thirds of our parents attend. As was the case last semester, we mailed the reports home to give all parents the opportunity to digest the teachers’ comments before attending the interviews.

The middle of semester 2 provides a great opportunity for students to refocus in order to achieve their best for term 4 and all parents, regardless of your child’s performance, should make use of this interview time.

The low level of attendance for year 11 is a result of their camp coinciding with the interviews. Also this

time more parents made use of the mid afternoon session and less parents attended in the evening.

If parents have any feedback about the structure or format of these interviews, please don’t hesitate to contact the school. Peter Egeberg

ANITA PROPOSES HUMAN RIGHTS IN PARLIAMENT!! On Monday 10th October, Anita Samardijza [11A] joined former premier John Cain, Equal Opportunity Commissioner Jamie Gardiner and Youth Activist David Mould in a lively parliamentary debate on the issue of whether or not Victoria should introduce a charter of Human Rights. The event was the ‘State Constitutional Convention’, the culmination of a series of regional convention which included State, Private and Catholic schools. Forty-four schools sent students to Parliament House to vote on the issue, which was carried successfully. Anita was the only student to speak on the issue and had to rebut the former

premier! She was fantastic! Taylor Canning and Kagiso Manaka represented the school as delegates and the event was also filmed for ClassTV by PJ Duggan, Nick O’Neill and Samantha Sly. Paul Van Eeden CELEBRATION OF 2005 – INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF SPORT & PHYSICAL EDUCATION At a press launch to introduce the 2005 International Year of Sport and Physical Education, Secretary-General Kofi Annan remarked that ‘Sport is a universal language. At its best it can bring people together, no matter what their origin, background, religious beliefs or economic status. And when young people participate in sports or have access to physical education, they can experience real exhilaration even as they learn the ideals of teamwork and tolerance’. In 2005, staff at THS have focused specifically on the promotion of Sport and Physical Education in the school to increase school-based and out of school participation in sport and physical activity. Our school program is consistent with the mission of ACHPER [Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, which believes that ‘Quality PE and sport programs produce young Australians with skills, understanding and attitudes to participate in a range of active lifestyle pursuits in line with their abilities. Physical educators make a wornderful contribution to the learning of thinking and problem solving skills, working in groups, leadership and communication skills.’

More information about ACHPER is available from their website: www.achper.org.au

Students and staff are excited about the following programs which will be incorporated in the school’s already comprehensive Sport and Physical Education Program in term 4:

Billion Beats Day This is an Australia wide program designed to raise awareness in children and parents of the long term benefits of a more active and healthy lifestyle. It involves students in Australian schools being active for one hour on Friday 21st October. The idea is to have enough Australian children being active during the event so that the total number of heartbeats exceeds 1 billion. Thornbury High staff and students will work together to participate in this event.

Sussan Women’s Fun Run/Walk On Sunday 4th December, the annual Sussan Women’s Fun Run/Walk will be held at the Catani Gardens in St Kilda. Participation in this event aims to promote physical activity in the community and raises funds for the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’. It is an event which

brings together thousands of females of all ages and from all backgrounds. Thornbury High would like to take a ‘team’ approach to the event and encourage staff, students and mothers to participate as part of a Thornbury High School team. In the lead up to the event, PE staff will run training sessions for students and staff interested in improving their fitness. This will include specific lunchtime activities and an after school walking/running group. More information will be available in future newsletters. If you would like more information about this event please contact Physical Education staff or visit www.supersprint.com.au

We are extremely enthusiastic about running these programs in term 4 and look forward to the support of the school community. Sports faculty THS SPORTS STAR PROFILES Beginning in this edition of the THS newsletter, we will be featuring profiles of students who participate in a variety of sports both out of school and within the school sport program.

YEAR 11 GREAT KEPPELL CAMP Twenty eight hours on a bus, six Mc Donald’s stops and a really painful back side… then arriving at Keppell, all our complaints about the bus trip were gone. It was early morning and the sun was shining. You’re on a island with all your friends and you’re feeling the best. It was so relaxing I don’t think anyone wanted to leave. We stayed two days at Keppell After that, we were back on the bus heading south to Surfers Paradise. At Wet n Wild everyone had a heap of fun . We stayed at the best place. We had our own kitchens and bathrooms. The next day was the best day because we went to Dream World. It had the best rides, and if you had any fears about heights, this was the time to face them. I loved it so much, and I was so proud of myself because I went on the Giant Drop. I saw the famous Big Brother house. That night we went to Cavill Avenue where everyone had a ball. We also went to Movieworld. There you really do see characters come to life! The best thing there was the Police Academy show, it made me laugh so much. None of us wanted to leave. This experience will never be forgotten. We left with a smile and great memories of this camp. Renee Vonta 11B

Student & Staff on Wipeout Ride at Dreamworld

After a 28 hour bus ride, we arrived in Yeppoon early Sunday morning where we caught a ferry to Great Keppell Island. We spent 3 days and 2 nights in the beautiful weather of Great Keppell Island, exploring the island, snorkelling, kayaking, playing beach volleyball and on some occasions getting lost. ☺ Everyone enjoyed the time we spent in Keppell. On the 17th we got on another ferry which took us back to the main land. We arrived at the Gold Coast and had a look at the famous surfers’ beach. We ventured to Wet ‘N’ Wild Water World, Dreamworld. and Movie World. Memories that we took

WHAT A TREAT! Students in year seven were visited by a local, published author. Luke C. Jackson wrote ‘Unclaimed’, a detective novel for teenagers. Luke talked with students about the writing process and lively discussions evolved when students were asked for their thoughts about:

• What makes a great mystery story? • Who could be the perfect detective? • Designing the crime • A trail of clues • Opening lines

During the session students were taken through planning stages for writing their own bite-sized mystery stories.

These stories will be written this term and submitted to a panel led by Luke for judging. The prize winning stories will be published on Luke’s website and in the school newsletter. The winning students will receive a

certificate and a copy of Luke’s latest novel Summer’s End’. ‘

Students from years 7 – 12 were invited to meet Luke during lunchtime to listen to a first reading of his new novel and talk about his approach to writing. Many of the students found his ideas interesting and helpful. They had such thoughtful expressions on their faces and had many questions for Luke. It seems we have a few budding authors in our midst!

Luke is a teacher from Distance Education Centre Victoria. He is a member, together with teachers from Thornbury High School, of the Northcote Network Cluster B project focusing on improving teaching and learning in the middle years.

We are grateful for Luke’s time, energy and inspiration! If you are interested in finding out more about Luke visit his website at: www.lukecjackson.com FINALISTS AUSTRALIAN STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL!! The school entered a short documentary into this year’s festival called “Thornbury Tries to Save Nak”. It features Anita Samardijza narrating the story of our attempts to save Nak over footage filmed by Rein Kivivali. This includes the protest outside the Immigration Department, Nak’s last days at School and the bedlam of the airport. The film features a KOOL SKOOL track “Living in Reverse” written by Bailey Smith and performed by Bailey, John Edmonds, Andrew Braidner and the dulcet tones of Madeleine Acosta. The students will be walking the red carpet at Federation Square/ACMI on the 14th October where the winner will be announced! Fingers Crossed!. Paul Van Eeden YEAR 9 & 10 DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS The year 9 & 10 district inter-school tennis competition took place at Banksia Secondary College on Wednesday 14th September. The four district schools competing in the round robin included Northcote HS, Reservoir District SC, Thornbury HS and Mill Park SC. The Thornbury High School team played some very close matches and came in third place overall. The THS team consisted of the following students: Tuan Duong, Reece Chapman, Louis Hill, Jason Forward, and Phillip Hiah. Thornbury HS students worked extremely well as a team and demonstrated excellent behaviour and outstanding sportsmanship on the day. Well done. Vivian Sipsas

REPORT FROM STUDENT WELLBEING COORDINATOR All Year 10’s have now completed their CPR training. Students were all well behaved and appreciated the opportunity of having this training. I would like to thank St John Ambulance for their experienced trainers and Project Rainbow for funding the CPR training. It is wonderful to be the recipient of some generous funding from organisations who provide programs such as this to be accessed by as our students free of charge. St John Ambulance is a worthy organisation that needs to have its services recognised. On Friday 21st October all Year 9 students will be participating in Party Safe Day. It coincides with “A Billion Beats Day” which is celebrating the International Year of Sport and Physical Education. Students will be participating in some physical activities as well as attending informative sessions on drugs and how to party safely. A small cost will be required of each Year 9 student. Peer Support training will take place in early December and all Year 9 students will be trained in Peer Support. Students who wish to be actively involved in Peer Support with our new Year 7’s next year will have an opportunity to express interest in the program. Please encourage your child to consider becoming a Peer Support Leader, as the skills and friendships that develop will no doubt contribute to her/him becoming an active and productive citizen within [and hopefully outside] the school. Finally, the Sussan Women’s Fun Run/ Walk is happening on Sunday 4th December 2005. The cost is $15 for students and you get a T shirt and a show bag. Parents are also encouraged to participate. So, come join the Thornbury High School contingent for this our first Sussan Fun Run/Walk! Please ask your daughter for more details or contact Vivian Sipsas (P.E) or Barbara Carydis on 9458 6125. Don’t forget to read the parenting pages at the end of this newsletter. Till next time, stay healthy! Barbara Carydis ☺ SWC MUSIC NEWS

KOOL SKOOLS CDS are now available from the office for $10. STAFF PROFILE: NICK DEAN

Ah, this is our man of many talents, endless patience and boundless enthusiasm for school music programs. A drummer first and foremost, Nick began learning drums aged 9 from John Seal. He played in various

community bands including Nunawading Brass Band, Heidelberg Youth Orchestra and the Preston Brass Band in which he toured New Zealand and the UK and played at the Edinburgh Festival. He also came first at the National Brass band championships in the Junior Side Drum section.

He studied music at Doncaster High School and completed HSC Percussion before studying for his (Science, note) degree at Monash Uni. A Dip. Ed. followed at La Trobe Uni. Throughout Uni studies he taught percussion and drum kit privately and in schools. On completing his Dip. Ed. he gained government positions teaching in many different schools. He is currently at Doncaster SC where he teaches percussion one day and a rock programme with five rock bands on his other. At Thornbury he teaches

percussion as well as coordinates our busy programme. He has played in a number of rock bands, including “The Committed” a Commitments tribute band, and his original outfit “Mint”, which recorded two CDs and played in many venues around Melbourne, regional Victoria and Sydney. He currently plays in a band with Sean Nihill (our brass teacher) called “Conch”, who will be gigging soon.

Nick’s many interests include a love of travel, which has seen him go overseas and around much of Australia (not to mention Great Keppel a few times!) and is driving his plan to take the band to the USA next January.

VCE BAND The VCE Band (Units 3&4) Group performed successfully on Sunday 9th October at Greensborough TAFE to complete their assessment for this subject. They played pieces to highlight each instrument and have reportedly performed well. Congratulations to this group and thanks to Sean who took them for after school rehearsals during the year.

Students undertaking VCE Units 1&2 will undertake their music assessments during the week of the Year 11 exams. We wish them well for this.

Diana Norton/Nick Dean Music Teachers SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORT Ten of us (4 parent councillors, 3 staff councillors, our principal and 2 community councillors) met in the meeting room at 7pm on Wednesday 17th August.

As required, we received various reports, discussing them and voting via a show of hands. One of council’s most important and arduous tasks is the Finance report which approves all the financial activities of the school. The Thornbury High School council takes spending taxpayer’s money very seriously.

Council continually updates policies or generates new policies. A mobile telephone policy was presented at this meeting. Another major component of the council’s activities is the image of the school within the community. We put much importance on how parents perceive Thornbury High School.

The last item of the meeting was a report by one of our community councillors and a former principal, Howard Kelly. Howard passed on some of his understandings of future Victorian Government education policies, and explained how these policies may impact on Thornbury High School. As a result we have invited the Regional Director to our October Council Meeting. PARENTS & FRIENDS ASSOCIATION Our final meeting for 2005 will be held in late November so there is plenty of time to plan an agenda that interests you! The meeting will be held on Tuesday 29 November from 7 til 8.30pm - put it in your diary now. Let me know what topics you would like to discuss with the Principal and other parents. You can contact me via email or by phone. This will be our Annual General Meeting so we will look back on the year and plan what your association will be doing in 2006. I hope to see you there.
