July 2017 Tiger Times

It’s hard to believe that is the end of June already. The school year has gone by quickly and leaves us with many wonderful memories of working and playing hard

together. Throughout the year I have marvelled at the energy and enthusiasm of our staff and students. Brentwood Park is a large school and it is able to offer so

much in the way of educational programs, service opportunities, extra-curricular activities, and leadership. Without the dedication and commitment of our teaching

and support staff, these opportunities would not be possible. Like our students, they have worked hard this year and have earned a much deserved summer

vacation.

As I reflect on the last ten months, I find myself smiling about all the wonderful experiences we have had this school year and know that we had full year of learning,

community service, and just plain fun! The following recounts just some of the year’s highlights:

Our students participated in the district public speaking contest and submitted their writing to the Words writing competition.

44 Grade 4/5 students and 1 Grade 3 student wrote the Abel Math Contest.

51 Grade 6/7 students wrote the Gauss Math Contest.

Our student performing artists performed in Christmas Concerts, Primary Days of Music, Intermediate Choir Festival, and the Festival of Beginning Bands.

We had 43 students perform in our popular Talent Show.

Just over 15,000 books were circulated in and out of the library.

Our students harvested about 1200 potatoes this year.

We welcomed parents and families into the school for Parents-As-Partners conferences, Christmas Concerts, the Hip Hop Concert, Literacy Day,

Grandparents Day, student-led conferences, the Growth Fair, the Volunteer Tea, Multi-cultural lunch, Sports Day and the school picnic.

Our students raised funds for the Terry Fox Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada*

We continue to be one of the only schools in the province that collects food for the local food banks throughout the year.

Our Me to We team of 22 Grade 7 students boosted our Food Bank collection with a special Halloween themed We Scare Hunger campaign, and then followed

up those efforts by collecting 156 coats in the Coats for Kids program (local), raising $760 for the Wenjack Foundation promoting positive Indigenous/Non-

Indigenous relations in Canada (national); and raising $360 for access to clean water in rural Africa (global).

We sent 110 students from Grades 5-7 to Whistler Blackcomb Mountain three times to hone their ski and snowboard skills.

Our student athletes participated in Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track.

Our students went skating and swimming at local community centres and visited our local libraries and art galleries.

We had 23 students in Grades 6 and 7 take on the important role of safety patrollers, helping students and families cross busy Delta Ave.

Our students visited the Vancouver Art Gallery, Science World, Country Farms Pumpkin Patch, Victoria, the Vancouver Aquarium, Playland, Britannia Mine,

Camp Elphinstone, Maplewood Farms, Burnaby Village Heritage Museum, Musqueam Museum, the Seymour Fish Hatchery, Save-On Foods, Evergreen

Cultural Centre, Deer Lake, and hiked the Sea to Summit trail in Squamish.

We enjoyed performances by Duffelbag Theatre and Project Soul.

We welcomed a tennis instructor, a hip-hop instructor, Young Actor’s Project, and Earth Rangers to enrich the school program for our students

We welcomed Kalup and Sam, who worked with all of our students teaching them about Canada’s national game, lacrosse, and then sent a team to represent

Brentwood Park in a district mini-lacrosse tournament.

We participated in the Fresh Fruit and Veggie program which brought grapes, pears, baby carrots, apples, mandarin oranges, mini cucumbers, cherry

tomatoes, and mini peppers to our students and staff.

We hosted after school student programs from Burnaby Parks and Recreation, BYTE Computer Camp, Young Rembrandts and a parent-sponsored Math Club

On behalf of the staff, I would like to thank the parents and families of our Brentwood Park School Community for your exceptional help and support over the past

year. So many of you have given your time, energy, expertise, and financial support to enrich the educational experiences of our students, and we are extremely

grateful. We wish you a happy and relaxing summer with your families. Finally to our students, I wish you a safe and fun-filled summer. Use these next nine

weeks to relax, enjoy your families, and experience new things. Keep reading and stay in touch with friends and loved ones through letters and email. If you can,

CANADA YOUTH ROBOTICS CLUB

Canada Youth Robotics Club is a non-profit organization focusing on STEM education in Canada. We are going to hold two international summer camps that local

students will have STEM classes and participate in STEM events with international students.:

3-Day STEM International Summer Camp, for students in G8 to G12 held at SFU (Burnaby Campus) on July 13-15. There will be 27 students from China visiting Vancouver, and experiencing three different days with local students to learn and complete a STEM project together. For more information, please visit our

website https://www.roboca.org/stem-summer-camp .

Hi-tech Robotics Summer Camp, a two-week camp for students in G2 to G7 held in our West Vancouver campus on July 17-28. There will be 13 students from China visiting Vancouver, and learning robotics and coding with local students. Most interestingly, we will organize students to visit SFU, UBC, H. R. MacMillan

Space Centre, Science World, etc. For more information, please visit our website https://www.roboca.org/robotics-summer-camp.

As sponsored by Math and Science Association of Canada, both summer camps are FREE to students who pass the interview with us. There are only 20 free spots for 3-Day STEM International Summer Camp, and 10 free spots for Hi-tech Robotics Summer Camp. Because of high volume of applications, in order to

How Screen Addition is Hijacking Our Kids

– and How to Break the Trance

By: Nicholas Kardaras, Ph.D. ISBN:9781250097996

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press, New York, NY, August 2016

Electronic devices are finding their way into the hands, hearts and minds of kids at a much young-er age than ever before. As a teacher and mother of 2 school-age children, I have been curious about the impact of screens on the developing brain. Recently, I came across this book at the public library and even when I wasn’t reading it, I was still thinking about the research findings

mentioned in it. It’s an easy read and thought-provoking book!

In the book, Dr. Kardaras identifies that while there are benefits for the use of mobile technology such as smartphones and iPads, there are also some concerns related to the neurochemistry of the developing brain. Have you ever heard of the dopamine effect? Dopamine is the feel-good neurotransmitter that is the most critical element in the addiction process. “…since the brain’s pre-frontal cortex – the brain’s “braking mechanism,” which controls impulsivity isn’t fully developed until well into a person’s twenties, a child simply doesn’t have the neurobiological apparatus to handle that level of stimulation.” This book is packed with studies and examples of how excessive screen time and mental disorders are related– it also provides helpful suggestions on what we can do as parents to reduce the impact of screen time on our kids. I found myself talking to my family at dinner-time about the book as I was reading it and even my children were intrigued by it. I highly

recommend Glow Kids to parents and educators! By S. Krishna
