Dear Families and Friends,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank students, staff, parents and friends for all the wonderful dedicated
work and effort into building this incredible learning community that has Hazelbrook Public School at its very
core.
It has been a very great privilege to have been the leading learner of this school and most of all to have been
part of this staff and parent community. It has been a joy to share in the learning and growth of the beautiful
children at Hazelbrook. They are testament to fabulous teaching and parenting.
I am now in a position to let everyone know that Melinda Williams, the substantive principal, is very excited
about her return to her beautiful school Week 1, Term 3. I know you will all be looking forward to welcoming
Melinda back into the principalship of the school.
Schools are never static places and Hazelbrook has, with the support of the Director for Educational Leadership,
Mrs Jennifer Thomson, engaged in focused successful long term initiatives over the last twelve months. This
has required a great deal of effort and dedication from all staff and they have been brilliant at engaging with and
understanding how the change initiatives in learning benefit staff, students and this school. Mrs Thompson,
Melinda and I have arranged for handover during the first week of next term to accommodate a sharing of
information and current school directions, and facilitate a smooth transition between Principals.
We wish Mr Fergusson the very best and much happiness in his retirement as he enjoys the next phase of his
life journey.
Thank you everyone.
Yours in Education
Ms Emma Jamieson

Non educational Mobile digital device restriction in schools
The NSW Government announced in December 2018 that it intended to restrict the use of mobile digital devices in NSW primary schools in 2019. This announcement was made in response to the key findings and recommendations from the independent review into the non-educational use of mobile devices in NSW schools.
For primary schools the review recommended:
the implementation of a mandatory ‘digital licence’ for all students in NSW
provision of mandatory cyber safety education for students
a review of the adequacy of existing cyber safety education in the curriculum and ICT general capability
provision of better quality and more cyber safety education for teachers, including NESA-registered professional learning
restricted use of smartphones for students in primary school
A pilot program will be implemented in primary schools in term 3, 2019 with full mandatory implementation to occur in all NSW Government primary schools from Day 1, Term 1 2020.
New policy will be developed to address the issues raised in the review of non educational digital devices. Schools will engage their school communities in the transition to new policy requirements.
.Orienteering
On Wednesday the 19th of June some of the stu-
dents with leadership roles went to Castle Hill for
the Sydney West Orienteering Championships.
(Orienteering is map reading to find places which
is timed for competitions).
We left at 8:20am to get there at 9:30am for our
practice. We had to learn how to read the maps
and how to scan the poles at the places. The indi-
vidual races started at 11:00am where we lined up
until it was our turn. Once it was your turn you
scanned the start and then you started. Everyone
put in a very good effort and then we got prepared
for relays. With the relays everyone started at
the same time. The first runners of the 3 people
relay teams went off and did their part. Then they
had to give their scanner to the second runner so
they could do their thing. Then the third. After
that it was time to go home. It was a really fun day
with a couple of students qualifying for state.

Inter School Chess Competition
Last Wednesday 12 students from years 2 to 6 represented Hazelbrook Public School in the Inter School Chess Competition at
Blue Mountains Grammar School. Teams that participated had come from Lithgow PS, Kindlehill School, East Blaxland PS, BMGS
and Wentworth Falls PS. Every person played 7 games of chess on the day and everyone from HPS had at least 1 win! Our teams
placed very well in the overall standings. The team spirit showed by our students was phenomenal. They all played with great
focus and sportsmanship. We all had a great day and a bit of ‘brain hurt’ by the end. We look forward to next year’s competition.

Springwood High School Showcase
What a busy week our talented students have had! Spring-
wood High School, in collaboration with local Public schools,
created an opportunity for students to showcase their amazing
talents.
Monday saw the Senior girl dancers, Band and Senior record-
er down to Springwood for rehearsal before the big double per-
formance on Friday. The matinee performance was attended
by Stage 3 students whose behaviour on the day was a credit
to Hazelbrook Public School and our community.
The night performance was open to parents and families with
the show being a sell out! The students enjoyed performing to
such a large audience and this was obvious in the quality of
the performance.
A huge thank you must go to Mrs Schmidt, Mrs Peen and Mrs
Evans who guided the students to such amazing performanc-
es. We are grateful for your dedication!
