reetings! I hope that you’ve enjoyed a wonderful summer vacation, it’s hard

to believe that it has come to an end already. I feel like it was just yesterday

that we were saying goodbye to the transfer students and graduating class of

2018! I’m very excited to welcome all new and returning staff, students and

parents to the 2018-2019 school year. I’m very proud to be returning to Saint Paul

American School (SPAS) for my sixth year. SPAS is a culturally rich, progressive, and

successful program as demonstrated by our 10-year anniversary last year. It’s an

exciting time to be a part of the SPAS family and I’m motivated to serve the

students, staff, and stakeholders of our school and overall community once again.

As we enter a new school year, I still have the same high expectations for our

students. I encourage each and every one of you to be the very best that you can

be and maximize your own potential. My challenge to you this year is simple:

“make a choice.” Every choice you make in your life becomes a part of who you

are. There are many activities and opportunities at SPAS for you to choose from.

Whichever you choose to do, I hope that you have a chance to hone your skills and

become a well-rounded, academically successful young person who’s eager to

make positive contributions to the greater community as a whole.

While you’ve been away from the campus, the administrative teams and teachers have been working tirelessly to prepare for the upcoming school year. As the students have arrived at school the past few days, I’m sure they’ve already noticed that we’ve upgraded and opened the gymnasium, put a small set of bleachers on the track so that spectators are comfortable while watching athletic events, and made other facility improvements throughout the campus. Additionally, we’ve been working closely with Principal Ma and the administrative team from Second High School attached to Beijing Normal University to increase collaboration and alignment of all programs on campus. We hope that our focus on continuous school improvement and management structure will allow for a more positive experience for all students in all programs here on campus – ONE SCHOOL, ONE DREAM. We ask for your trust, patience, and support as we create more supervised activities and academic opportunities without compromising the overall safety of the students. Thank you for your continued support and I wish you all a

very successful year ahead! Notable changes are explained on the following page:

1. Homeroom & Reassessment/Independent Practice: All students will be asked to report to school

and return to the dormitory at the same times. Therefore, students will have a 15-minute, teacher supervised homeroom starting at 7:45am and ending at 8:00am. All students will be placed in homerooms based on their houses, similar to Harry Potter, to receive daily announcements, maintain classrooms, and ensure that kids and facilities are prepared for learning. At the end of the day, students will have designated times for re-assessment and independent practice during their off-periods (either G/H). Students can sign up for G and H classes, take on leadership opportunities such as Teaching Assistants, Peer-Tutors, or volunteer around the campus if they choose to do so. All teachers will have office hours from 2:30pm-4:00pm and students can use this opportunity to receive any assistance that they may need. There will also be teacher-led, subject specific help four days a week.

2. Off-Campus Passes: To ensure the safety of your student, off-campus passes will be restricted to students that have demonstrated good behavior on campus. Demonstrated positive behavior on campus implies that students are ready to be members of society outside of the campus. A list is generated monthly and is only applicable to High School students.

3. Life Enrichment: Life Enrichment is a new evening activity held from 7pm-8:25pm and is supervised by a Campus Life Assistant. Students that sign up for Life Enrichment can go to the grocery store, bank, or even get their hair cut! Signup forms can be found in the Dean of Students office.

4. Athletics and Activities: All athletics and off-campus activities will run from 7:00pm-8:15pm

Monday-Friday and are supervised by a Campus Life Assistant. The main off-campus activities for students are Life Enrichment and Fitness. Life Enrichment provides students to go to the grocery store, bank, and get something to eat off campus with CLA staff. Students can sign up for Life Enrichment in the Dean of Students office, but please understand that there is a limited number of students allowed to sign up per day. The Fitness activity is an opportunity for students to purchase a membership with a local gym, non-affiliated with SPAS or Second High School. Athletics will have practice two nights a week.

5. Fitness: The fitness activity is a supervised off campus event in which students will be taken to a local gym. Students that enroll in the fitness class are responsible for the purchase and maintenance of the membership and are required to follow all safety precautions as set forth by the off campus facility.

6. Dormitory Management: The progressive disciplinary policy that’s been implemented the last few years has been updated. All dormitory students will follow a new point system that promotes student responsibility and holds them accountable for their decisions. We hope that students build positive relationships with their roommates, floor mates, and all members of the dormitory living environment.

7. STEM Clubs: All STEM clubs will start after the October Holiday due to our CAPS Trips and Sports Day celebration preparations.
