Principal

Thank you to all the year 7 families who attended the High School transition meeting in week 2, they were very pleased

with the attendance. At present we are administering the year 1 phonics check. The screening will confirm if students are

developing the phonics knowledge they need to be successful in their reading, spelling and writing programs. The

students are asked to read a number or real and pseudo words.

Attached to this week’s newsletter is our second reading comprehension activity, this weeks is ‘Sunflower Plant Life

Cycle’. If you receive your newsletter by email you can pick up a hard copy at the Office. Completed questions are placed

in the comprehension answer box at the Office. I encourage you to support your children in completing the activity to

build their comprehension skills. Remember they may not be able to read the text on their own, you can read it to them,

the important thing is that they have understood what was read to them and can answer questions

about the text. This supports our School Improvement Goal 1.

Our School Improvement Goal 3 focusses on Math and in particular building the concepts to develop

a deep understanding of number. One of the ways we are developing this is through subitising.

What is subitising? Subitising is the ability to instantly recognise the amount of objects in a small

collection without the need to count each object. For example, when a student rolls a dice they can instantly recognise

the number of dots on the face of the dice. Subitising helps build the understanding that numbers can be represented in

multiple ways. There are many ways that we can provide experiences to develop subitising. Some teachers have already

sent home sets of subitising cards for practise, if you would like some subitising flashcards to use at home

with your child/ren they are available at the office. You can also use dice, dominoes or a handful of

counters and ask “How Many?” If you would like more information please see your child’s class teacher and

happy subitising!

Megan and Cheryl Seabrook have been busy preparing for BOOKWEEK in week 5. I thank them for their planning and

preparation so as to foster the importance of reading.

Pie Orders

All Pies will be delivered to the School Hall on Thursday 22nd August. We appreciate the bakery giving us this opportunity

to fundraise. Due to our 2.30pm finish all orders are to be collected from the Hall between 12 and 3pm.

If you are unable to collect your order by 3pm please organise someone to collect on your behalf as the school does not

have refrigeration to store orders.

School Photo Day Tuesday 20th August is school photo day. Students are expected to be dressed in school uniform, no hoodies or SAPSASA windcheaters. Family envelopes are available from the school office. Please take the time to read the relevant information on the MSP Photography payment envelopes and remember these helpful points:

- Don’t seal envelopes inside each other. You can pay for all children in one envelope however each child needs to have their own envelope on photo day.

- Please enclose correct money as no change is given. Cash, cheque and money order only (sorry no credit card accepted)

- Online orders can be made via http://orders.msp.com.au (you will require unique shootkey displayed on each order envelope

Father’s Day Stall Our annual Father’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 30th August. Please contact the school office if you’re able to help out on the day with running the stall or would like to donate some baked goods or gift items. We would really appreciate some volunteers! Student Voice Update Our Student Voice met last week and voted to support the school Grounds Committee with purchasing a new net for the turf and redevelopments of the Harmony Garden. This is a special opportunity for Student Voice to contribute their ideas and be part of projects around the school grounds. We look forward to seeing end results as the school year progresses. Later in term 3, we will be having a ‘Wear Your Footy Colours Day’ (or sports colours) to support the Fight Cancer Foundation; participating students are to bring a gold coin donation. Student Voice members shared the Visible Learning that’s been happening in their classrooms… Room 10 – we have been resilient when learning a new maths topic (fractions) Room 6 – Learning about resilience and being in the ‘Learning Pit’ Room 5 – Showing curiosity about Africa Room 9 – Learning to say ‘hello’ in Spanish and dancing Room 3 – We have to be resilient and problem solve in making our Ninja Warrior courses Room 7 – Acting on feedback in our writing Room 8 – Problem solving in ‘M&M’ maths, graphing data in different ways, decimals and percentages Room 4 – Resilience when making a new place value system in maths, it was challenging Room 12 – In maths, making bundles of 10 and learning ‘teen’ numbers, we collaborated in groups Room 11 – We showed resilience when learning about clocks Room 1 – We have been using lots of different problem solving strategies and resources learning about angles

Room 7 have been curious about different artists and how they engage their audience through a use of colour, space and line. We have studied numerous artists such as James Rizzi, Sandra Silberzweig and Kimmy Cantrell. We were resilient through our planning and changing our design when things didn’t go to plan.

Book Week

Theme: Reading is my secret power

Book week is quickly approaching, classes have begun to explore and read

some of the focus books for 2019. Students are engaging in a variety of

learning and craft activities around this year’s theme ‘Reading is my secret

power’. This year as is tradition, students can come dressed as their

favourite book character on Friday.

*If students are not dressing up, please remember students will still be

required to wear full school uniform.

This year during book week, the school will be hosting a book/board game

sale in the library. All proceeds will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy

Foundation. 14/08/2019. The Library will be open both before and after

school if you are interested.

Books – 50 cents each Board games $1 - $5

Through the week students will have also the opportunity to participate in a lucky dip book draw. All books are brand new

and waiting to be explored. There is a $2 cost for each lucky dip draw.
