December 2008

Dear Friends of Tiger Band,Thanks to excellent recruitment efforts this year, the Princeton Band has attracted a large class of 2012

and many new sophomore members. At half-time of this fall’s home football game against Lehigh, the Band was over 70 members strong; and for the first time in recent memory, the Band needed two buses for the last football trip of the season. Enthusiasm continues to grow as we head into the winter, as the Band will be cheering on the men’s hockey team as they look to repeat their ECAC championship season of a year ago.

The Band’s steady growth in recent years is an exciting challenge for the Friends of Tiger Band. It is wonderful to see young Princetonians in such numbers joining the ranks of (in my humble opinion) the most spirited student group at Princeton. Of course, the cost of running the Band increases as the Band gets bigger, as new jackets, hats, and instruments will be needed to accommodate the new members. In addition, we expect transportation costs (the largest single item in the budget) to jump tremendously if two buses will be required on a regular basis. Your contributions make all of this possible, and will fuel the continued growth of the PUB in the years to come. Thank you for your support!

Band Grows with New Recruits

Dear Friends,Many of you are likely aware of the incidents

that occurred during the PUB’s visit to The Citadel in September. As one of a handful of Band alumni present for the trip, I’d like to share my account.

The Princeton Band put on a show at the Citadel of which Princetonians everywhere should be proud. I am not referring to the half-time performance, which could not be heard. However, even with the drumline drowned out, the Band marched to Going Back, scrambled cheerfully, and stayed upbeat. Later on, dozens of cadets infiltrated the Princeton stands and surrounded the Band, shouting obscenities. Band members cheered “Let’s Go Princeton” for several minutes straight until the cadets were escorted out. In the face of animosity, the Band put on a stunning display of patience, calm and maturity, earning applause from the Princeton fans.

Maturity? The Princeton Band? Before this trip, I would have been hesitant to link those two concepts. I have never been so proud of the Princeton Band as I was that weekend. Many Princeton administrators were present and were also impressed by the Band’s behavior. We are grateful for the University’s continued support, and it was especially heartening to see the support from PUB alumni and friends in the pages of the PAW.

In the end, the trip was a huge success. Even after the game, spirits were high, and the whole episode turned into a bonding experience that has already earned its place in PUB lore.
