Home Learning - Year 2This is a very good website for people who have a computer to hand. Week 2 is fractions and it is very comprehensive with an excellent explanation for fractions and some work to complete. Please let me know what you think and if it was useful.

Here is useful links for games with fractions and symmetry https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/3-5-years/countinghttps://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/fractions-and-decimalshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z3rbg82https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching

1 Do you know what the word symmetrical means?

Talk to your adult about what it means?

Look around your house and see if you can find objects or patterns that are symmetrical.

2 Do you remember what a fraction is? Talk to your adult about what you know.

A fraction is an equal part of a whole and the parts have to be exactly the same.

Mathematical talk● What is the

whole? ● What are the

parts?● How many parts

is the object/quantity split into? Are the parts equal? How do you know?

● Do equal parts always look the same?

● Is there more than one way to split the object/quantity

I have written a number sentence using the equal sign

½ = ¼ I then realised I was wrong! I experimented with a piece of paper and then realised I was wrong. Can you use a piece of paper and find out how I knew?

into equal parts?

3 Can you make some

playdough? Here is a very simple recipe that you can follow with your adult. You will need8 tbsp plain flour 2 tbsp table salt 60ml warm waterfood colouring 1 tbsp vegetable oil

With your playdough can you divide it into fractions?

Try dividing it into halves, quarters, thirds.

What other fractions can you make?

We can find fractions of amounts too.

Have a go at these.

½ of 8 ½ of 20

Can you make your own? What does the number have to be, an odd or even number? Can 15 be divided by 2? What would happen?

Now try ¼ - How many parts are we dividing the

Method1. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl mix together the water, a few drops of food colouring and the oil. 2. Pour the coloured water into the flour mix and bring together with a spoon. 3. Dust a work surface with a little flour and turn out the dough. Knead together for a few minutes to form a smooth, pliable dough. If you want a more intense colour you can work in a few extra drops of food colouring. 4. Store in a plastic sandwich bag (squeeze out the air) in the fridge to keep it fresh.

whole into?

¼ of 12 ¼ of 16

Can you make your own?

Now can we try ⅓ .

What are we dividing the whole into?

⅓ of 9

⅓ of 15

Now make your own.

You can try finding ¾ of amounts? You could try ⅔ of your amounts. Have a go at ²/₄ what do you notice?

During the WW1 people would communicate using Morse code. It was

See the Morse Code below

You could write your name using the Morse code or write a message to someone. Then try tapping it out to someone you live with and see if they can hear the sound, write it

During the war when there were German airplanes flying over Great Britain people would shelter in something called an Anderson Shelter in case a bomb was dropped. This kept them safe. Here is a picture of one. It was buried in the ground and covered with grass to disguise it. It had to be very strong! The other photo is what it would look like inside and sometimes lots of families shared the space.

also used in WW2 by the Navy because using a radio meant that their enemies could hear their messages which would not be a good idea! Someone would write the message and the operator would tap the message to make noises for the dots and the dashes. A famous message is S.O.S..._ _ _ …This meant you were in trouble. You have used codes before? Do you remember who used to use them to write his diary?

down and understand what you said. Can you think what might be the best material to

make an Anderson shelter?

Can you make an Anderson Shelter of your own? You could design it first and label what materials you are going to use. Remember it has to be strong! Do you still have your playdough? Maybe you could use this for something?

If you can’t make one can you draw one and explain how you might make it?
