Compulsory Task – An Example

Tessellations in

the real world

Problem Solving Package (PSP)

Application of heuristics using POLYA problem solving strategies

Step 1 (A) : Understand

the Problem

What are you asked to find/solve?

What facts do you have?

What do you know that is not stated

in the problem?

Step 2 (B) : Plan What strategies do you know?

Try a strategy that seems workable

Step 3 (C) : Execute the

Plan

Write out the steps

Think of the big steps first, and then

do the little steps

Step 4 (D) : Review Re-read the question

Did you answer the questions

asked?

Does your answer make sense?

Steps in PSP

Making Suppositions

It means …

•Making assumptions

•Making deductions

•Making guesses

PSP – An Example

There are 8 hamsters and

chickens in a shop. There are 26 legs altogether. How

many hamsters are there?

PSP – An Example

Step 1 : nderstand the problem

Using Polya’s

No. of legs a hamster has: 4

No. of legs a chicken has: 2

Total no. of legs : 26

There are 8 hamsters and chickens in a shop. There are 26 legs altogether. How many

hamsters and chickens are there?

What do I need to find out?

•How many hamsters?

•How many chickens?

Step 2: Plan the strategy to use.

Using Polya’s

There are 8 hamsters and chickens in a shop. There are 26 legs altogether. How many

hamsters and chickens are there?

Draw a comparison model

Draw a part- whole model

Make a supposition

Guess and Check

Working Backwards

Step 3 : Execute your plan.

Using Polya’s

There are 8 hamsters and chickens in a shop. There are 26 legs altogether. How many

hamsters and chickens are there? If all the animals were chickens and each chicken has 2 legs,

Then I have a total of 16 legs. 8 x 2 = 16 I will have 10 extra legs. 26 - 16 = 10 I will redistribute the 10 legs to form hamsters. 10 ÷ 2 = 5

Step 3 : Execute your plan.

Using Polya’s

That means I have…

5 hamster (animals with 4 legs) 3 chickens (animals with 2 legs)

Step 4 : Review your answers.

Using Polya’s

My answer is :

5 hamsters and 3 chickens

My Claim

My answer is correct.

My Evidence

I have written the correct numbers.

My answer makes sense.

Proof:(E.g. Working backwards)

Siti spent $8.35 on a comic book.

This was $3.90 less than the amount she

spent on a storybook.

a) How much did the storybook cost?

b) How much did she spend on both items? $8.35

$8.35 $3.90

C

S ?

(b)

? (a)

47

a) $8.35 + $3.90 = $12.25

The storybook cost $12.25.

Ans: $12.25

b) $12.25 + $8.35 = $20.60

She spent $20.60 on both items.

Ans: $20.60

• A Science Practical Test will be held in term 3 on

the 30th of July 2015.

• The Science Practical comprises 4 stations

where students have to perform a simple task

and complete short-answer questions

• Weighting: 20 marks [5m x 4 stations]

• Marks will be included in the final semestral

assessment

Objectives:

1. To engage students in writing, doing and thinking science beyond the confines of the syllabus.

2. To promote school-parent partnership through the activities which provide opportunities for bonding with your child.

The activities from the young scientist cards have been integrated into school-based worksheets and weekend assignments where appropriate.

Stars [15 stars] earned from completing the activities in the worksheet/weekend assignments will help them to earn the young scientist badge.

Cards to be completed this year are the Young Chemist and Young Physicist

Star earned!

• Scientist in Focus (New*)

• Each term we will focus on: – contributions and character traits of a famous

scientist or

– careers in science related to the topic learnt

• Articles will be printed for the students to read and reflect on the impact of the scientist’s work on society as well as the values role modelled

• Fun activities to follow the articles to enrich the learning of science

• Science Enrichment lesson at the Science

Centre – Light

– Students will be going to the Science Centre

for the enrichment lesson in Term 4

• P4 Camp at LKC Natural History Museum

– Spend a night at the Museum.

– Students will engage in activities based on the

school values to build character, as well as

develop their passion in Science to Learn,

Lead and Make a difference.

Thank You!
