Seeking Donations PLEASE! If anyone is able to donate some ‘sheep manure’ to help rejuvenate the gardens around the school and

6 small bales of hay to help in the construction of a potato garden at the Secondary campus it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact either of the School Offices on 67821266 or 67821104 if you are able to assist.

Message from the P&C Once again BCS along with the P&C are hosting the Zone Cross Country (Monday, May 27). This will be a major fundraiser for the P&C and we are appealing to all families to support either by way of volunteering time to help in the canteen on the day or alternatively cooking slices or cakes to sell with tea and coffee. This is the third year the P&C have provided the canteen with very positive feedback about how YUMMY our cooking is. Thanks to your wonderful support we hope to carry on with the same standard as we have for the last two years. All monies raised are channelled directly back into the school to continue to provide resources to create a great learning and play environment for your children. If you can help in any way please contact Kelly Phillips on 67821313, myself on 67821848 or either School Office on 67821266 or 67821104. Thank you for your support. Rhonda Phillips

UNE Open Day On Friday May 3 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 attended the University of New England’s Open Day in Armidale. The day started with tours around the Colleges where they had the opportunity to look around the rooms and hear about the extensive range of activities and functions featured at each college. The tour guides won the students over with free food, music and games. Students then went to the University where there were stalls set up. There was something for everyone with information and activities on all different types of careers available at the University. It was a great day overall and a

fantastic chance for the students to taste what Uni life may be like.

Today We’re Alive On Tuesday, May 7, Stage 6 English students attended a live performance of the play, Today We’re Alive at the Playhouse Hotel. This performance was funded by the New England Region in order to provide a live theatre experience for rural and remote students. Not only did the performance meet syllabus requirements to include Aboriginal content, it also provided material for the Year 12 students’ Area of Study, ‘Belonging’. Feedback from the students has been positive and they are now keen to visit the Myall Creek Memorial later in the year.

Britany Hughson’s School Based Traineeship Year 11 student, Britany Hughson has recently started her School Based Traineeship with the Barraba Pre-School as part of her Higher School Certificate study. Britany will work at the preschool under the supervision of the preschool teacher, Mrs Susan Chand, each Monday and Thursday during school term. Britany’s training will be delivered by New England TAFE. Her teacher will be based in Moree and classes will be conducted on-line. A School Based Traineeship is the equivalent of 4 units of Preliminary HSC study (or two subjects), which means that Britany can drop two subjects which contribute least to her future study and career pathways. At the conclusion of 2014 Britany will have earned a Higher School Certificate, Certificate III in Children’s Services and a Certificate of Proficiency recognizing the workplace learning that Britany will have completed. In addition, Britany will have completed Certificate II in Hospitality which is a new Stage 6 innovation at Barraba Central School. Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are a great way for students to experience the world of work, to enhance their employment prospects and, in the case of trainees like Britany, to earn as they learn. Pictured from left: Ed Princic (School Based Traineeship Coordinator), Judy Campbell (VET Coordinator), Britany Hughson, Karen Hughson (mother), Emily Bowden (Preschool President), Susi Bell (Regional SBAT Coordinator),Melissa Abra (TAFE), Alison Dundon (State Training Services/Apprenticeship Centre) and Susan Chand (Preschool Teacher).

Captains Visit to Sydney Last Wednesday our Secondary School Captains, Emma Brodbeck and Jackson Faulkner, travelled to Sydney with other school captains from the region to meet local MLA Kevin Anderson at Parliament House. Here they listened to politicians speak and were able to ask questions at the end of the talk. They also sat in on a very interesting debate. They then met the State Governor Marie Bashir at Government House.

Governor Bashir spoke about how she became Governor and what her role entails. Emma and Jackson were then able to have a look around the gardens and have a sneak look at a couple of rooms in the beautiful homestead. Thank you to both Emma and Jackson for representing our school at this very prestigious event.

Secondary Cross Country Barraba Central School held their annual Cross
