Introduction

As we continue with online learning due to COVID-19 restrictions, the College continues to invest to

improve the way we deliver online learning to our primary students. To date, we’ve facilitated learning

via Seesaw and throughout Term Three, teachers have been calling students at home to provide

additional assistance and support.

Alhamdulillah we have recently been able to secure sufficient Chromebooks to make them available to

our Year 5 and 6 students. Chromebooks have been successfully utilised by our secondary students for a

few years now. The availability of Chromebooks means we are now ready to introduce live online

lessons via Zoom for Year 5 & 5 students. From Wednesday 2 September, students will join their

classmates and teacher in live classes throughout the day.

This guide has been updated to support students and families to prepare for this significant transition.

Online lessons are new to our primary students and teachers. From our experience with secondary

students, we know the first few days may take some adjusting, but things will quickly settle as we all find

a new sense of routine using different technology.

At the end of the guide, you will find contact details for members of the Academic Leadership Team.

Please get in touch for any further support and clarification. Together, we’ve got this!

Finally, we ask Allah (SWT) to guide and protect our families and community. May we benefit from this

time and gain a renewed perspective of our continued blessings. Ameen.

Communication and Attendance

Communication and Learning Resources

Teaching will be via the Zoom video conferencing platform. Communication and distribution of online

learning materials will be via our existing platform, Seesaw. The fortnightly learning plan will continue to

be uploaded by Sunday evening every week. The plan will include a range of tasks to support our

students’ learning including Zoom, Seesaw activities, online tasks (e.g. Mathletics, Studyladder),

worksheets and activities.

Printed Learning Packs

With the introduction of Zoom lessons, printed learning packs will be discontinued for Year 5 & 6 students from Wednesday 2 September.

Teacher Availability for Communication with Parents

Zoom lessons are similar to classrooms – they will be a forum for direct communication between

teachers and students only. Parents or other members of the household should not attempt to

communicate with teachers during class times.

Seesaw will continue to be used for communication between parents and teachers. Responses to

Seesaw messages will be provided in a timely manner. Teachers are not expected to reply to students or

families outside of hours between 8.45 am and 3 pm.

Student Liaison Calls

Teachers will be communicating directly with students in Zoom classes. Therefore, student liaison calls

will no longer be conducted. Similar to when students are learning face to face, calls may be made to

parents if a student is absent/late or to follow up on any concerns regarding students’ learning or

wellbeing.

Attendance

Schools will continue to mark attendance during online learning. It is expected that students be punctual

and be logged in and ready by 8.45 am for their Quran recitation each morning. We request parents to

ensure that students have a quiet learning space for their lessons.

If a student does not attend the Zoom lessons for more than 2 consecutive days, the form teacher or

another member of staff will contact the parent to follow up on the student.

Feedback on Completed Work

Teachers will continue to provide feedback on completed work. Returning the completed work on

Seesaw also allows us to understand how the student is progressing and what future learning support

each student may require.

Page 5: Primary School (Years 5 & 6) Online Learning Guide For

5

We request that all completed activities/tasks be returned to the teacher via Seesaw for feedback.

Feedback will be provided within 48 hours of the work being returned.

If a student or family is finding it difficult to complete a set task, please contact the teacher. For further

support, please refer to the contact list provided at the end of this guide.

Using Zoom

Links to classes will be distributed to students via Seesaw along with the Timetable.

Links may vary throughout the day due to security and to cater for students working in different groups.

Therefore, students should pay particular attention to ensure that they are clicking on the correct link at

the start of each lesson.

Before commencing, students should follow the instructions below to sign into Zoom on their

Chromebook. Instructions to sign in using a different device are shown later in the guide.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The Zoom app will be installed onto the Chromebook automatically. Please ensure the

Chromebook is connected to the Wi-Fi at home in order for the app to be downloaded.

When signing in, students should select the SSO option, if students sign in with an account

other than their student email address, they will not be able to join the class.

Signing into Zoom

Students should follow the below instructions to log into zoom before clicking on the link in Seesaw.

Managing Screen Time and Online Safety

It is important that students keep a balanced approach to online learning. Time spent using digital

devices should be broken up with physical exercise and offline learning tasks. The mix of activities

provided by teachers in the learning plan should assist families find that right balance.

It is also important that families also consider eSafety and the responsible use of information and

technology. This includes:

The appropriate use of digital platforms (Zoom & Seesaw), privacy and information protection

Respectful online communication

As students will be using the internet and online services more than ever before, we advise both

students and families to be extra vigilant about cyber bullying. Families are also reminded that by law,

children under the age of 13 years cannot have social networking accounts such as Facebook, Kik,

Instagram, Musical.ly, Snapchat, WhatsApp and so on.

We encourage families to refer to the eSafety website (http://www.esafety.gov.au) which contains

information regarding internet safety.

Please refer to the Primary Student laptop agreement form for guidelines on safe usage of laptop.

Student Wellbeing and Care

Times of change can be challenging, and it is important that students remain focussed on what is within

their control. Despite our physical distance, the College continues to remain available to support

students and their families during what may be a disruptive and difficult time. Please contact the form

teacher or contacts at the end of this guide for support or advice. The below are some additional tips to

keep students physically, mentally and spiritually healthy during this time:

Keep consistent with prayers - in the remembrance of Allah (swt), the hearts find rest

Create a positive atmosphere. Smile – it’s a Sunnah!

Do a random act of kindness:

o Help your younger sibling with something

o Help around the house

o Make du’a for someone

Keep active and consistent with physical activity

Keep connected with friends and family

Don’t remain in front of your screen between classes

Eat fruits and vegetables and drink plenty of water

Read or listen to Quran

Memorise a few verses of the Quran each day – even 1 verse a day will be 30 verses by the end

of the month!

Maintain good hand hygiene and wash your hands with soap regularly

Additional Suggestions for Parents/Guardians

The below are some additional suggestions on how parents can best support their child adjust to

learning at home via Zoom.

Establish Routines and Reinforce Expectations

Parents can:

Create a sense of routine. If bedtimes have ‘lapsed’ through the break, get back into similar patterns you would establish during a normal school term

Provide your child a quiet and comfortable study area where distractions are minimal and learning resources are readily available

Let other members of the family be aware of the routine and timetable you’re working to so they can assist

Create a healthy balance between formal learning (e.g. Reading and writing) and initiated learning (e.g. outdoor learning)

Be committed yet flexible. Things may not go to plan, and that’s ok!

Provide your children with healthy snacks and lunch during timetabled break times

Support Your Child’s Learning

Parents can:

Remind your child to attend to all tasks and celebrate their progress

Encourage students to complete the tasks for the day – create a checklist and give positive reinforcement when all the tasks are completed

Support Your Child’s Wellbeing

Parents can:

Communicate any issues or provide feedback to their form teacher – we’re here to help!

Encourage your child to keep connected with family and friends under your supervision

Avoid over exposure to negative news or discussions

Monitor how much time your child spends online and refer to the eSafety website for valuable resources and information to protect your child while online (http://www.esafety.gov.au)

Arrange Family Time

Remember to share quality time as a family. As some examples:

Enjoy a meal together and talk about the day

Offer Salah together

Read the Holy Quran together, reflect on Allah (swt) and His creation

Talk about the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW together

Talk about your children’s interests

Talk about any fears they may have and give them reassurance

Face-time family members (especially grandparents!)
