MATHEMATICS FRAMEWORK
Pupils should be able to:
• Recall specific mathematical facts, concepts, rules and formulae, and to perform straightforward computations. (knowledge)
• Interpret data and use mathematical concepts, rules or formulae and to solve routine or familiarmathematical problems. (comprehension)
• Analyse data and/or apply mathematical concepts, rules and formulae in a complex situation, and to solve unfamiliar problems. (application & analysis)

ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES
USE OF CALCULATORS
CALCULATORS IN PSLE
To align the assessment with the curriculum, calculators will be allowed in one part of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) Mathematics and Foundation Mathematics examinations from 2009.
Use of Calculators in Primary Mathematics
As calculators will be allowed in one part of the examination, there is a need to restructure the examination format into two papers:
- Paper 1 is the non-calculator component to ensure that important computational skills continue to receive emphasis.
- Paper 2 is the component which allows the use of calculators.
The two papers will be taken on the same day with an administrative break between the papers.
Use of Calculators in Primary Mathematics
CALCULATORS IN PSLE
Only calculators that are approved by the Singapore Examinations & Assessment Board (SEAB) will be allowed in the examination.
To maintain continuity from primary to secondary education, these calculators can also be used at the secondary level.

P6 FOUNDATION MATHEMATICS EXAM FORMAT
MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS
- For each question, four options are provided of which only one is the correct answer.
Format of P6 Examination Mathematics / Foundation
Mathematics Paper
1-MARK SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS
- For each question, a candidate has to write his answer in the space provided. Marks are awarded for correct answers. Any unit required in an answer is provided and a candidate has to give his answer in that unit.
Format of P6 Examination Mathematics / Foundation
Mathematics Paper
2-MARK SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS- For each question, a candidate has to write his
answer in the space provided. Marks are awarded as follows:• 2 marks are awarded if the correct answer is
given.• If an incorrect answer is given, 1 mark is awarded
for the correct method or working shown.• Any unit required in an answer is provided and a
candidate has to give his answer in that unit.
Format of P6 Examination Mathematics / Foundation
Mathematics Paper
• STRUCTURED/LONG-ANSWER QUESTIONS
- For each question, a candidate has to show his method of solution (working steps) clearly and write his answer(s) in the space(s) provided.
Format of P6 Examination Mathematics / Foundation
Mathematics Paper
• Hand in assignments punctually.
• Do corrections conscientiously. This gives your child the opportunity to revisit any misconceptions and clarify them.
• Seek clarifications when in doubt.
• Revise what is taught in class daily and practise, practise, practise.
Expectations of pupils
• Show workings for MCQs so that the teacher can monitor your child’s thought processes and provide remediation when necessary.
• Display perseverance in solving a problem.
• Be systematic in presenting solutions to problem sums i.e. number sentences, workings (if no calculator is allowed) and statements to conclude.
Expectations of pupils
“Even the hardest puzzles
have a solution.”
• Practise time management i.e. complete Paper 1 within 40 min (stipulated time is 50 min for Standard Math)
• Use calculator to compute only when the calculator icon is displayed beside the question. We do not want your child to be at a losing end when it comes to Paper 1.
Expectations of pupils
• Monitor your child’s work i.e. ensure all corrections are complete and check before signing.
• Cooperate with the Math teachers and have trust in us… for we all share a common goal, that is to realiseyour child’s potential and make sure he/she does well in Mathematics.
