Rise, fall of Valvano Empire fortunately reversedFrom State Sports Information

    andStaff Reports

Perhaps State's 1982-83 nationalchampionship basketball season canbest be described as the rise and fallof the Jim Valvano empire. Forvtunately. for the enthusiasticWolfpack coach and his “team ofdestiny". the chronology was revers-ed.The fall-came first. After‘the early

edition of the Wolfpack jumped outto a 7-1 record and a ranking as highas 12th in the country, State fell uponhard times when leading scorerDereck Whittenburg fell on Virginiaguard Othell Wilson's foot January12 and broke his foot just afterhalftime. He had scored aphenomenal 27 points in the firsthalf.Suddenly. one third of the

isosceles triangle of seniors ThurlBailey. Sidney Lowe and Whitten-burg was missing. When Whitten~burg went out of the lineup. Statewent out of the polls. The Pack lostfive of the next six games. but thosedefeats were to national powersVirginia. North Carolina and Mem-phis State. tough foes even when ateam is full-force.

That stretch of losses started thedoubts. and it marked the first ofmany times State was “down for thecount.” But before such severeadversity claimed the upper hand.the Wolfpack was back on .its feet.winning eight of the next 10 gamesincluding a stunning 70-63 upset ofthird-ranked North CarolinaFebruary 19. That upset may verywell have been the turning point ofthe season.

State won that game withoutWhittenburg. The Wolfpack hadregrouped and reloaded. Lowe andBailey never played better. Thesophomores — Terry Gannon. Loren-zo Charles and Cozell McQueen —matured ahead of schedule, and afreshman. Ernie Myers. Whitten-burg's replacement. contributed 15.1points per game.Gannon. like Whittenburg a bom-

bardier. dazzled the crowds with his“downtown" range, hitting 53 of 90attempts from beyond the three-point line in the ACC's first yearunder the new rules (three-point playand 30—second clock). Charlesanswered the need for a power for-ward who could muscle inside. andMcQueen, averaging only three re-bounds a game before the infamous“football". lifted his average to 7.1.

The Wolfpack was on the rise. andthere was only one thing that couldgive State a greater high — thereturn of Whittenburg. He was backon the hardwood with a healed fifthmetatarsal Feb. 27 at Virginia. butthe rest of his body was less than 70percent. and the Pack fell. 86-75. Butthe team was getting stronger. andfinally. on March 5. State put it alltogether — scoring 130 points (thehighest point production by a col-legiate team this year) against WakeForest to wrap up a tie for thirdplace with Maryland in the AtlanticCoast Conference regular season.

If those points weren't a premoni-tion. then State's next game againstWake should have been. In the firstround of the ACC Tournament inAtlanta. the Wolfpack slipped by theDeacons. 71-70. when Charles canneda pressure free throw with :03 on theclock. State then‘ knocked off No. 5ranked North Carolina again. 91-84 in

overtime. and No. ranked Virginia.81-78. to win the coveted crown.

Bailey, Whittenburg and Lowewere all-ACC Tournament selec-tions. and Lowe. who broke the ACCrecord for most assists in a season(North Carolina‘s National Player-of-the-Year Phil Ford had 753) with 762.was the Most Valuable Player in theACC Tournament. Lowe and Baileywere also named first team all-ACCwith North Carolina's Michael Jor-dan and Sam Perkins and Virginia'sRalph Sampson. But the regular--season honors

were overshadowed by the ACCTournament championship. The lasttime the Wolfpack had won the ACCTournament was in 1974. the sameyear State captured its first NCAANational Championship. But that year. the Pack had its own

twotime National Player-of-the-Yearin David Thompson. the tallestcenter in the country in 7-4 TomBurleson. a point guard who didn'tmiss free throws named MonteTowe, another lightening quickguard named Mo Rivers and a powerforward who would become a majorleaguer for the Baltimore Oriolesnamed Tim Stoddard. With thattalent. those guys were supposed towin it all, and they did.

This year's team was not supposedto be playing basketball in April. Tosay State's trip to the Final Four andeventual national championshipwas expected would be anunderstatement. Whittenburg wasnot “supposed" to return. The doctors pronounced his collegiate careerover the week of January 12 and.when he went out. the sympathycards poured out.

Staff photo by Greg HatemLorenzo Charles wheels high for two over UNLV's Sidney Green In the West Reglonals.Bailey was not “supposed" to out-

shine the consensus all-Americas.His, parents asked him not to playstreet ball during his formative highschool years. preferring instead aculturally rich upbringing that in-cluded playing three musical in-struments instead of playing thehoops with the asphalt contingency. The articulate senior learned themoves and the shots and carried thepoise from his personal life onto thecourt. In the meantime, he becamethe 11th all-time scorer in State'sbasketball history with 1.495 points.Charles was not supposed to

average 11.1 points and 8.3 reboundsin State‘s six games of the NCAATournament. Gannon was not supposed to keep bombing shots fromdowntown when they didn't countthree points anymore. In fact. Lowewas the only one who did what he

was supposed to — he made assistsand he didn't make turnovers. But the “Cardiac Pack" really out-

did itself in the NCAA. transcendingthe wildestexpectations by makinglast-minute miracles seem com-monplace.

0 Beating Pepperdine in doubleovertime. 69-67. Down by six pointswith 70 seconds left in first overtime.McQueen put in a rebound after amissed free throw with :06 left tosend the game into second overtime.Whittenburg hit 8-for-10 free throwsin the second overtime.

0 Beating Nevada-Las Vegas.71-70. UNLV. which had led by 12 inthe second half. led 70-69 and was onthe foul line for a one-and-one with:32 left. Bailey banked in his own re-bound with :04 left on the clock forthe win.

0 Beating Utah. 75-56. A breatheragainst another team that wasn'tsupposed to be where it was._Stateled 68-48 with 2:23 left. Whittenburgscored 27. State shot a phenomenal78.9 percent (15-for-l9l in the secondhalf. 68.3 (28-for-41) for the game.

0 Beating Virginia. 63-62. Virginialed 62-61 and was on the foul line forone shot with :54 left. Charles hitboth ends of a twoshot foul with :03left for the victory and the WestRegional Championship. Whitten‘burg was named MVP.

0 Beating Georgia. 6760. Statecontrolled the tempo against thespeedy Bulldogs to stretch its lead to59-41. Bailey and Whittenburgscored 20 points apiece. and Mc-Queen pulled down 13 rebounds tosend the Pack to the national cham-pionship game.

0 Beating Houston. 54-52. Statetrailed 50-44 with 3:56 left and forcedthe Cougars to the line, where theyconverted just 2-of-5. Lowe and Whit-tenburg connected two bombs apieceas the Pack tied the game. 52-52.Whittenburg’s short 35footer dunk-ed by Charles with :01 left clinched it.The Wolfpack held the Phi SlammaJamma to just one dunk. Lowe.Bailey and Whittenburg were namedall-Tournament.

In all. State had come from behindin seven of its last nine games to win.The newspapers echoed phrases like“tiptoeing along a tightrope." “flir-ting with defeat." “down for- thecount but not out" and “destiny'sdarlings."Heroes were everywhere. Charles‘

free throws and dunk. Lowe's assists.McQueen's tapins. Gannon’s bombs.Bailey's second effort. Whittenburg‘ssecond chance.

It all added up to a death-defyingmarch to the '83 national champion-ship.

this one better than ’74’sFor nine years. the legend of State

basketball centered around nameslike Thompson. Burleson and Towe.“The Championship Year" becamesynonymous with 1974. The hopesand dreams of Wolfpack hoopballerswere epitomized by the glory of thatnational championship.

Since State captured its second na‘tional title. no longer can all that talkcenter around one ,year. The mostprominent names in Wolfpack hoopsthese days are names like Bailey,Lowe and Whittenburg. Most people can remember the

first‘ year State won the title. Someof the people that were associatedwith that team are still around. Twoguys that have been associated withState basketball for a long time arethe Wolfpack Network pair of WallyAusley and Gary Dornburg.

Ausley and Dornburg have beenthrough the lean years as well as the

big ones with the Pack "and Ausley.for one. gives the '83 team the ex-citability check.

“Well. I'm much more excitedabout this one than the last one." saidthe voice of the Wolfpack. “I thinkmost of us expected State to win in’74. I know it was a tough roadbecause we had to win one of thegreat games ever in the (ACCl Tour-nament. Then we were down sevenagainst UCLA in the second over—time and came back and won thatone. There were some excitingmoments, but this ballclub wasn'teven supposed to win in Atlanta. I'mnot even sure we were supposed tohave beaten Wake Forest. This onewas totally different. This one‘s beenmuch more exciting."Dornburg felt the ups and downs

of the Wolfpack throughout the yearas the second championship unfold-ed.

“Wally and I are so close to theteam." Dornburg said. “We travelwith them and live with them and all.We sort of live and breathe basket-ball. When they have up momeqzts.we're high and when they are doi’zn— like Whittenburg's injury cer-tainly this has been a rollercoasterride.“The team was 9‘7‘at one point and

were 1610 going into the finalregular season game. The thoughtswere in everybody's mind. thecoaches and players. wonderingwhether or not they could even getinto the NCAA. They were talkingabout having to win against WakeForest and then looking real goodagainst Carolina. It just started tobuild." ,The downs looked bad at one time

but it was a no big surprise to Dorn-burg to see the developement of thesquad.“When Whittenburg was out the

team was struggling.” Dornburgsaid. “We didn't really know if theywere going to get it together. Wesaw the improvement of Gannon andCharles and Cozell McQuenn whenWhit was out. Even at 16-10. to behonest with you. I really didn't knowif State was going to get in theNCAA. We had a glimmer of hope.We knew we were going to go to theNIT.“Then all of a sudden it started to

build. It was like putting one block ontop of another. With each win theybecame stronger. When they got byPepperdine. I knew they were goingto go a long ways in the Tournament.I really did. I felt that. I didn't haveany idea we would make it here (tothe championship)."

Ausley was not highly optimisticas the Tournament began. but thatall changed.“Oh yea. I thought we were going

to lose." Ausley said. “Seriously, Ithought we would beat Pepperdine.

Then when we got down by six, write.it off. that's the end of it. And abunch of things happened and wewon it and I knew we were going tolose to Las Vegas. We came back andwon that one. Then I thought we'dbeat Utah. 7 7“Then I thought we'd lose to

Virginia. but I wasn't quite so sureabout Virginia. simply because thepsychological effect of the ACC wasthere. The kids would get more jack-ed up against Virginia. If Virginiahad been No. 2 in the nation fromsomewhere else. I don't think theywould have gotten quite as jacked upfor them but. playing against yourown league. I thought 'we'd beatGeorgia and then I really did think .we had a good chance againstHouston because of the contrast instyles."Even that game had its ups and

downs, though.“At the end of the half. I really felt

good." said Ausley. “Dereck andSidney were running past theHouston guys. They weren't gettingany dunks. We weren't shooting well.but then they weren't either. Thenwhen they went up by seven. thereagain, I said this is the end of theseason. I’m not out there playing.Whose to expect that with fiveminutes left in the game and you'redown to the No. 1 team in the nationby seven that you have any reason tocomeback? What are you going to doto comeback? And bang. what happened. Houston decided to sit on it.When they did that. then I startedfeeling good again."Dornburg finds iE-hard to single

out one game as the most exciting inthe stretch.

“It starts with senior day. and thatWake Forest win." he-said. “Thatwas something special. a kind ofmomentum that you had to have going into the Tournament. I would saythe most exciting moments were inthe Pepperdine comeback. Theywere literally buried and dead. Therewas no way that a team could comeback down five" points with 54seconds left. There's no way a teamcan come back from that. And they
