"The Evolution and Future of Marine Biomedicine at SIO-UCSD" Dr. William Fenical Professor of Oceanography Director of the Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine Scripps Institution of Oceanography UC San Diego Dr. Fenical received his MS from San Jose State University and his PhD from the University of California at Riverside. Determined to blend his love of the ocean with his career, Bill attained an Assistant Research Chemist position at Scripps in 1973. Since that time Bill has studied marine chemical ecology with particular interest in

the role of chemical defense in thwarting predation on vulnerable marine organisms. It is from this re-search, and the resultant discovery of new chemical compounds, that Bill became interested in the medical potential of the oceans. Today his research focuses on the discovery of medicinally valuable compounds derived from marine microorganisms collected locally and tropical locations, as well as extreme environments such as the deep-sea and arctic waters. Lunch is $14.00 for guests and $10.00 for Faculty Club members (purchase required). Lunch buffet starts at 11:30 am and lecture at 12 noon. Coffee and ice tea are provided in the meeting room. A parking permit can be obtained at the front desk. You can be sure of a lively discussion! You do not need to RSVP. Contact Judy Vacquier, [email protected] for more information.

A comprehensive immigration reform bill backed by a bipartisan Senate majority and President Obama is currently causing tremendous controversy. This presentation will examine the political, demographic, and economic origins of immigration reform and the prospects for passage. Drawing on research conducted by UCSD students, we will discuss how current U.S. policies are affecting migration from Mexico to the United States. David FitzGerald is the Associate Professor, Gildred Chair in U.S.-Mexican Relations and Co-Director, Center for Comparative Immigration Studies. He is co-author of Culling the Masses: The Democratic Origins of Racist Immigration Policy in the Americas (Harvard University Press, 2014) and author of A Nation of Emigrants: How Mexico Manages its Migration (University of Cali-fornia Press, 2009). His current project examines asylum policies in comparative perspective.

What’s Next for U.S. Immigration Reform and Border Enforcement?

Programming Algae for Advanced Bio-Manufacturing: Food and Fuel for the 21st Century

Stephen Mayfield Professor of Biology, UC San Diego Director, California Center for Algae Biotechnology John Dove Isaacs Chair of Natural Philosophy Wednesday, April 16, 2014 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. (Continental Breakfast) UC San Diego Faculty Club

Stephen Mayfield is director of the California Center for Algae Biotechnology, and a Co-director of the Food and Fuel for the 21st Century organized research unit at UC San Diego. He is also the John Doves Isaacs Chair of Natural Philosophy in the department of Biology. His research focuses on the molecular genetics of green algae, and on the production of high value recombinant proteins and biofuel molecules using algae as a production platform. Steve received BS degrees in Biochemistry and Plant Biology from Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from UC Berkeley. Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Geneva Switzerland he returned to California as an assistant professor at the Scripps Research Institute, where he remained for 22 years, becoming the Associate Dean of Biology before joining UC San Diego in 2009. In addition to running his research group and university research centers, Steve also founded Rincon Pharmaceutical in 2005, a company based on the low cost production of human therapeutics using eukaryotic algae as an expression platform, Sapphire Energy in 2007, the worlds largest company developing biofuels in algae and photosynthetic bacteria, and Trion Algae Innovations in 2012, a company developing high value recombinant proteins as animal and human nutraceuticals.

The cost to attend the event is $50 per person (includes continental breakfast and parking). A significant dis-count is available for UC San Diego alumni, faculty, staff and students as well as individuals who purchase
