PrinciPal’s Message

The month of November has been a reflective one, with the marking of our Remembrance Day ceremony. Thanks to all who attended this solemn event and to our staff and students who were very well-prepared to lead us through the ceremony.

November also featured our parent/guardian-teacher conferences and interviews. We would like to thank the parents and guardians who attended our interview and conference evening. Please rest assured that conversations around student learning can and should continue throughout the year with school staff, whether in person, or through notes and electronic messages. Research proves that parents and guardians who are involved in their children’s education help to secure student success at school. We value your support and interest in working together as partners in your children’s education.

Another area in which we seek your support is our student drop-off and pick-up before and after school hours. Please note that there is no staff supervision prior to 8:30 am, so please do not drop off your children to the school yard prior to that time as there is no one watching them. For those of you who drive and drop, please use our Kiss N Ride on Sixth Street in the mornings. The student drop-off is staffed beginning at 8:30 am. It is a safer option than dropping children off by car on Seventh street, as that is where our busses are entering the bus loop.

In other news, our annual Book Fair was a great success which has resulted in monies raised for our library to purchase collaborative furniture and more books! Looking ahead, we are eagerly anticipating our annual holiday festivities which include our Food Drive from December 3rd to 14th and our daily assemblies during the mornings of the last week of school.

Thanks to School council for their involvement in our upcoming Trinket Sale from December 17th to December 19th.

Have a great month of December!

We appreciate the commitment of all who volunteer at our school.

This school year, we are implementing a new online Volunteer

Portal. SCDSB Community Apps (http://

communityapps.scdsb.on.ca) is a new online portal that allows

you to begin the process for volunteering at our school. Here is

some information to share as we’ve been receiving some

questions:

Only NEW volunteers or those who received a letter in June

Idindicating you require an updated Criminal Background Check

Vulnerable Sector Screening (5-year renewal) are able to register

as a volunteer on the Community Apps website at this time.

If you’re a current, approved school volunteer, you can still

volunteer at our school for the time being. You should have

recently received a letter with your access code. This code will

allow you to register as a volunteer on the Volunteer Portal

through the Community Apps website.

Volunteering at Mundy’s

No Snowballs Allowed We ask for parental assistance in enforcing the message that throwing snowballs is not allowed. Students have been told that snow stays on the ground. Should a student be throwing snow, you will receive a notice to be signed and future incidents will result in more severe consequences. We appreciate your help in reinforcing this message as it affects the safety of students at school.

Boys Volleyball Mme Buttineau and Mme Cote would like to congratulate the Intermediate Boys Volleyball team on a fantastic season. The boys improved upon their skills and continually tried their best out on the court. They worked hard to improve upon the consistency and accuracy of their serves while also enhancing the power of their hits. The boys demonstrated positive attitudes (even during all those early morning practices!) and were great ambassadors of our school. Great work Cole, Dawson, Thomas, Leaf, Ryan, Everett, Marshall, Francis, Jasper, Ethan and DJ!

Girls Basketball What a season it has been for our Mundy’s Bay girls basket-ball team and it’s not over yet! Not only did we go undefeated in regular season play but the girls won every game at the Area Tournament. We played Tay Shores in the championship game to capture the banner. All season, the girls played with integrity showing sportsmanship and teamwork and we are extremely proud of them! Well done Ellea, Hina, Claire, Kiley, Ashlyn, Bethany, Gracie, Lacey, Islay, Deni, Janessa and Ava! Good luck to our team as they represent the North in the County Tournament next week! Thanks to Thomas and Noah who volunteered throughout the season to score-keep! We would also like to thank Coach Keith Leonard who has helped us this season and has been pivotal in our success this year!

Boys Basketball The intermediate boys' basketball team will be getting underway in December. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside M. Millar's office for any grade 7 & 8 boys interested in playing. Tryouts will take place the weeks of December 10th and 17th and regular season play will begin when we return in January. Make sure to keep an ear out for announcements in December for specific tryout dates and times. A quick note to parents of our new transportation policy; if you are not planning to take your own child to and from games, you must arrange transportation with a school approved volunteer driver. A form will be sent home with players containing details. Any parents interested in joining our volunteer driver list should contact the office ASAP as this process can take some time. Looking forward to another great season

PARENT INFORMATION

Food Drive: The Leadership Council will be running a food drive at Mundy’s Bay from December 3rd-14th. Please donate what you can in order to support families in need during the holidays.

High school information nights for Grade 8 students coming to a school near you! Is your child starting Grade 9 next year? High school Information nights happen this fall and winter. This event gives an overview of what’s new, what to expect, as well as a chance to check out the school and ask questions. Attend our local high school information night to find out what’s offered: Georgian Bay District High School, FEBRUARY 20th at 5:30p.m.

Christmas Assemblies: Once again we will be holding our Christmas Assemblies from December 17-21. Some classes will also be presenting short performances. Please keep your eyes on the upcoming weekly updates from your child’s teacher for further information as the dates approach. We would remind all guests who attend the assemblies that beverages are not allowed in the gym. We also ask that all strollers be left in the front foyer.

Last day of Classes: December 21st.

First Day Back: Just a reminder that the first day back after the holidays is January 7, 2019.

Safe Schools Reporting Tool

The SCDSB has developed a Safe Schools Reporting Tool, which is available on our school website home page, http://mun.scdsb.on.ca, as a Quick Access button.

The Safe Schools Reporting Tool gives students, parents and community members a way to report an incident online – whether it be bullying, drug use, vandalism or otherwise. Students are still encouraged to speak with a trusted, caring adult at school or home about their concerns, but the online form provides another option to those individuals who may not feel comfortable speaking in person.

When an incident is reported, an email will automatically be generated and sent to the principal and vice-principal(s) of that school, and school staff will follow-up.

Student safety and well-being is always our top priority. All members of our school community have the right to be safe and feel safe in our school community. This is one more tool at our disposal to achieve and maintain a positive school climate.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS

Trinket Sale

The trinket sale will take place on December 17-19. We would ask that all students bring a list with their mon-ey in a Ziploc bag. This way their mon-ey will not get lost and the teachers can make sure they select a gift for everyone on their list.

We are still looking for donations for the trinket sale. Please send any donations to the front office. All donations would be greatly appreciated.

The weather is definitely changing so we would like to remind you to send warm coats, hats, mitts (extra mitts) on a daily basis with your children.

Kindergarten registration opens in January

Do you (or someone you know) have a child who was born in 2015? If so, it’s almost time to register them for Kindergarten in the SCDSB! Beginning Jan. 28, 2019, Simcoe County’s public schools will register children for Kindergarten for the 2019-20 school year. New this year, the registration process begins online! Visit https://www.scdsb.on.ca/elementary/planning_for_school/kindergarten for more information.

French Immersion Information Night:

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) offers French Immersion (FI) at select schools throughout Simcoe County beginning in Grade 1. The goal of the FI program is to enable students to communicate in French with a high level of proficiency, enabling them to function with ease in both French and English. Upon graduation from the program, students will communicate in French with confidence in a wide variety of real-life situations. Information sessions take place in January for parents of students in Senior Kindergarten. The information meeting will be held at Mundy’s Bay on January 18 beginning at 6pm.The FI online application form will be available from 9 a.m. on Mon. Jan. 21, until 9 p.m. on Wed. Jan. 23, 2019 at www.scdsb.on.ca under Programs, French as a Second Language. While every effort is made to accommodate all FI applications, available space and staffing will determine how many students can be registered. Applications will be processed in the order they are received electronically. Please contact the school if you do not have Internet access at home or require assistance accessing the online application. Please note that the host sites for FI may change during your child’s time in the program, and your child may need to move schools. This may also include splitting the program between two different sites.

LIBRARY CORNER

Our school has moved to an automated safe arrival system. The first parent/guardian listed in the student file will receive an automated call on days when buses are cancelled if their child isn't at school. The recording will tell you that you do not need to call the school back unless your child should be at school

Winter is just around the corner in Simcoe County, and with it comes the possibility of severe weather, challenging winter driving conditions and possible bus and school event cancellations. All information regarding cancelled buses in Simcoe County is posted on the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium’s bus information website at www.simcoecountyschoolbus.ca. Our school is in the North zone. When buses are cancelled, schools remain open for student learning, unless otherwise noted.

The Consortium and bus operators try to make the decision to cancel school buses before 6 a.m. and make every effort to post announcements before 7 a.m. Inclement weather cancellations are effective for the whole day and buses cancelled in the morning will not run at the end of the day. You can follow the Consortium on Twitter @SCSTC_SchoolBus for bus cancellations and other information. You can also subscribe to receive bus delay notifications here: https://scstc.ca/Subscriptions

For school event cancellations in case of inclement weather, follow our school’s Twitter account @MundysBayPS or listen to your local radio station for event cancellation information.

Did you know that old markers do not have to end up in the landfill? There's a special place

where old markers go to die gracefully! Yes, it's a box in our office at school! When it's full, we'll

send them off to Crayola to be recycled into new markers for next year!! Crayola will take any kind of markers, and any brand. Please send them to school with your children to go into the dead marker coffin on Mrs Cail's desk in the office!!

Candy Cane Sales

Students will have the opportunity to purchase a candy cane gram for their friends and classmates during the last school week of December for a cost of 25 cents each.

Ditch Digital Devices and Plug into Play This winter, swap screen time for play time together. Children need play to learn, grow and be healthy. Unstructured child-led activities, or “free play”, make a world of difference. There are many ways to play together as a family: Get outdoors by taking a winter hike, making a snow-

man, or building a snow fort Make your own musical instruments and move to the

music Play hopscotch, tag, or hide and seek Play dress up together Set up an obstacle course using couch cushions for your

child to navigate Encourage your children to lead the way and experience fun from their perspective! For more tips to keep you and your family healthy this school year, contact Health Connection at 1-877-721-7520 or visit the health unit’s website at www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.

EMPATHY

We strive to understand and appreciate the feelings and actions of others.

A big thank you to all of the families who visited and supported our Enchanted Book Fair last month. It was a huge success! Based upon our sales, we will receive several new titles and resources for our library. Another big shout out to all of the grade 7 and 8

student volunteers who helped decorate and assist students and families with their purchases.

Scent-free environment: Just a friendly reminder that Mundy’s Bay P.S. is a scent free zone. Please do not wear perfume, cologne, aftershave and other fragrances to school.
