We have already been down to McCown’s and have plans to go down to Jim Bainter’s this winter. We are taking our annual Anniversary Horseshoe Trip in mid-January up to Omaha, Nebraska. They run a doubles tournament on Saturday and singles on Sunday. The doubles is “bring your own partner,” so that will be fitting for an anniversary trip. We will see how that goes; Vic and I don’t make the best pitching partners! We did not receive an official bid for our 2020 State Tourna- ment. Lebanon has shown an interest in hosting us again. The Officers will hold the Winter Meeting in Lebanon to discuss this matter and other horseshoe business. I don’t know anybody who wouldn’t want to pitch there again, but if this comes to fruition, the one thing we will need is lots of set-up and tear down help. If you are willing to help with anything, let us know and we will put you on the “list.” As I mentioned, the MOHPA Officers will be meeting in Leba- non on February 16 for our annual Winter Meeting. This is a full week earlier than last year, when it seemed like we rolled in from the World Tournament, went right to the State Fair, and then right to the State Tournament. Monroe had a good venue for pitching, and the local Cajun food was great. I am looking forward to going back just for the vittles! The entry form appears on page 17 of this issue of Shoe Biz, and information about Monroe, hotels, camping, and of course the entry forms, can also be found online. Last month, I updated my e-mail list. It sure seems like I deleted more inactive and invalid e-mail addresses than I added new ones, so we all need to be recruiting and inviting new members to our horseshoe association. This time of the year would be a good time to invite someone to ride along with you to an indoor tournament. I am sure very few people in Missouri even know that we have indoor tournaments going on. I was reading the October issue of Shoe Biz; it was refreshing to read the articles of a couple of our new members of our officer team with their fresh perspective and new ideas for us to increase membership. By the time this comes out, we will know how our Kansas City Chiefs have done. At least in the first round. That is exactly what I wrote last year, and we know how that turned out. Let’s hope for one more win to get to the Big Game this year! See ya on the indoor warm winter courts. Prez Reportby Ron Highley, President MOHPA

Hey all, Happy New Year to Everybody from the MOHPA Prez Family. Seems like it should not be 2020 already. With the whole farming year running behind schedule, harvest and wheat plant-ing was behind like the rest of the year. I just got the last of my equipment cleaned up and tucked away in the shed over the Christmas break.

With farming done until spring, I am ready for pitching on the indoor courts.

We did not receive an official bid for our 2020 State Tourna-ment. If you are willing to help with anything, let us know and we will put you on the “list.”

As I mentioned, the MOHPA Officers will be meeting in Leba-non on February 16 for our annual Winter Meeting. If you have any horseshoe-related issues to discuss, please contact me or any of your MOHPA Officers. The Officer Team only gets together

twice a year, and most of our horseshoe business is done by phone or e-mail.

The World Tournament this year is in a repeat location—Monroe, Louisiana—from July 13 to 25. Harvesters Food Benefit Tournamentby Dee McIntire

Don Harris Arena hosted the 10th Annual Harvesters Food Benefit Tournament on December 7, 2019. There were 48 pitchers, includ-ing six Juniors. Shoe Biz DeadlinesThe magic number is “9”:January 9May 9October 9

From the Editorby Laura Johnson

Winter is here. As I sit down to write this, the rain is falling and will soon turn to snow. We’re hoping it won’t be much, but only Mother Nature knows for sure. The Chiefs will be playing the Texans on Sunday in the playoffs, with a high of 36 degrees. We’ll be cheering them on from our cozy living room. Of course, by the time you read this, we’ll all know the outcome. Go Chiefs!

Our Christmas was fabulous and tiring, as usual. Keith and I have six kids of our own and seven grandkids. Add in the spouses and boyfriend, and just like that, we have a family of 18. My job is the shopping, and Keith’s is to have a job to pay for all my shop-ping. Together, we make it happen, and as you can imagine, we have a great Family Christmas with gifts, food, family games, and don’t forget, pictures. I hope you all had a wonderful, fun-filled, family Christmas too!

New Year’s came in with a boom, bang, pow. At least we were safe in our bed with a roof over our heads. Hoping for a safe and happy year to come for my family and all of my horseshoe friends.

With this new year, I’ve been thinking about our ups and downs in horseshoes. When you have a few subpar games of horseshoes, what do you do? Maybe you feel like you have had a lot of pathetic games lately; do you quit? I ask this because I have witnessed a few people who have commented on how bad they were pitching and said that they were going to take 6 months off. I know they think they will allow their high percentage events to drop off the scale and that they’ll be allowed to come back with a lower aver-age. Now, with a lower average, they have a better chance to win. But is it worth what you are missing out on? Is this really what it’s all about? I’m guessing they don’t feel the same about horseshoe pitching as I do. I admit that the first thing I look at after a game is my percentage, but it’s not the only reason I’m pitching. If I took 6 months off, I would be losing so much more than pitching shoes. I have to say that the fellowship of horseshoe pitchers is a big part of our sport. Coming together for a recreational sport is a time to treasure and is good for the soul. Horseshoe pitching is

also a lot more exercise than sitting on the couch in front of the TV. You aren’t going to get any better at anything by not doing it. If you are continuously losing ground in your pitching, don’t stay home. Instead, I suggest asking for advice from a higher percent-age pitcher. We all know who they are. Get some input from more than one person, and see what works for you. You’ll miss out on a lot more than pitching if you aren’t going to your horseshoe club or tournaments. You never know, you might be missed too.

Though no one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.

I hope that your holiday season was very enjoyable and that you are ready for a new year and a new decade. We’re going to have another run at the “Roaring Twenties.” I hope that this will be a great time for all.

My first 2 months have been busy with renewals. I am learning how to use new tools and remembering old tools that I used when I worked. I have found this new job to be very interesting and enjoy-able. I have met new people, and most everyone has been excited for me and supportive. My goal is to be available, open to positive change, and attentive to the needs of the MOHPA. As you would expect, I am still learning and continue to meet new challenges. I hosted my first tournament this past weekend, the Don Harris Memorial at the Don Harris Arena in Liberty. It was a very good experience for me and a very competitive tournament. We had entries from four other states and from other areas of Missouri.

Membership: I would like to stress the importance of recruiting new members. I know that we are always talking about the dwin-dling membership numbers. Let’s turn that around. What can we do to increase membership? Recruit a friend or family member. I believe that we are all as a group capable of finding new and in-novative ways to do this. As of December 31, 2019, we have 338 renewals for 2020. According to Jim’s column from last February, this is down from 427.

Eshoe: (www.nhpa-eshoe.com): In a change for our organization,

we will no longer be sending ID cards. Any member can go to this website or go to the NHPA website, scroll down, and click on Eshoe to renew your NHPA/MOHPA membership and print your mem-bership card. Eshoe stats are updated through NatStats. Tournament and League Directors, after downloading the new HSMaster version from the NHPA website, can import data directly from the Eshoe data base into their HSMaster data base. Profiles will no longer be sent out because this option has been eliminated.

Shoe Biz: The printing of Shoe Biz is the MOHPA’s largest ex-pense. The cost of editing, printing, and mailing Shoe Biz costs the MOHPA $7 of the $11 of each member’s yearly dues. Each edition is available via e-mail and on the MOHPA website. Contact me to change your Shoe Biz subscription to online only.

Another 18 angels have earned their wings, presented for the top three places in each class at the 19th Annual Holly Marie Memorial Mixed Open at the Don Harris Arena in Liberty, MO, on November 2.

This is a 100% proceeds-generated tournament, and the rest of the proceeds are then donated to a cause that Stephanie and I choose fitting in remembrance of Holly. This year we chose to have all proceeds go to the Host of the 2020 Missouri State Tournament.

The angel count is now at 342; look to see if you can find them on the courts at your next tournament.

The High Over Average awards—“Wings of Achievement”—were won by Jessica Wilson (2.40%; morning session) and Erika Myler (6.54%; afternoon session).

Two interesting things about these two winners: both are past Junior Girls State Champions who are now pitching in the Women’s Division, and Erika Myler is now a 2-time winner of this award. (The first to do this.)

The contributions for this year’s tournament totaled $526.50; the tote board now stands at $10,657.60.

Class A: 1st place, Stan Griggs, 72.1% (3 angels); 2nd place, Victoria Highley, 58.1% (5 angels); and 3rd place, Gregg Craven (30 ft), 54.6% (11 angels).

Class B: 1st place, Audra Craven, 43.9% (7 angels); 2nd place, Jim Newboles (KS; 30 ft), 42.5% (1 angel); and 3rd place, Laura Johnson, 48.4% (5 angels).

19th Annual Holly Marie Memorial

Class C: 1st place, Erika Myler, 45.6% (5 angels); 2nd place, Johnna Bales, 36.4% (5 angels); and 3rd place, Ron Highly, 40.0% (4 angels).

Class D: 1st place, Mike Young, 33.2% (1 angel); 2nd place, Jessica Wilson, 33.2% (2 angels); and 3rd place, Keith Johnson, 26.8% (3 angels).

Class E: 1st place, Bob Bloss Jr., 25.6% (5 angels); 2nd place, Sandra Couch, 21.7% (5 angels); and 3rd place, Larry Anderson (30 ft), 18.1% (7 angels).

Class F: 1st place, Mark Kiser, 17.2% (1 angel); 2nd place, Mark Miller, 10.8% (2 angels); and 3rd place, Rhilynde Myler (Cadet), 7.2% (1 angel).

Last ShoeL. Glen Enloe

November 26, 1947 – October 21, 2019

By Laura Johnson

Glen Enloe was a member of the Independence Horse-shoe Club in 2017 and 2018. In 2018, he pitched an aver-age of 35 points, and his high ringer % was 16%. Glen won 17½ of his 26 games for the season. He and his partner, Sandra Couch, placed 2nd in the league. Glen carried his pickup stick in what looked like a leather gun holster. One evening, we were talking about the foster children he and his wife had at home, and how they loved them and the time they spent together, but getting out to pitch was a nice break. As I began collecting information for this Last Shoe article, I realized how little we knew about this cowboy writer.

Glen lived in Independence, where he passed away Monday, October 21, 2019, at 71 years of age. He was born November 26, 1947, in Independence, Missouri, to Leslie “Emil” and Matilda “June” Enloe. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1966 and from Central Missouri State in 1970 with a degree in graphic arts, and then continued in the Master’s program at Wichita State. Glen worked in the graphic arts and copywriting fields until his retirement. He was an avid artist and poet, penning numerous cowboy poems and Western novels.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia “Pattie”; daughter, Amanda June Rucker (husband Marvin); son, Nicholas Devin (wife, Amanda); son, Philip Daniel (wife, Jana); grandchildren, Rayna and Chloe Rucker and Sylvia Hope Enloe; foster grand-children, Jayson and Christian; two brothers, Darin and Mike, and half-brother, Donald. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gary, and his infant grandson, Felix James Enloe.

I found a great little article about Glen. He was a native of Independence (the Queen City of the Trails), with deep family roots in rural central Missouri. He lived in a Civil War–era home as a child and raised his own livestock, and he attributed his love of the West to his father’s rural background and part-time edge-of-town farming and to growing up with a love of the silver screen cowboys. He was a rural real estate advertising writer with a Bachelor of Science degree in commercial art and postgraduate work in creative writing. He authored nine books of cowboy poetry, two books of free verse, and a nonfiction book set in the Old West. He did leather tooling and was a guest columnist for the Kansas City Star. His poem hung in the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City and appeared in American Cowboy Magazine. He was a member of the Missouri Cowboy Poets’ Association and presented poems at the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo, Echoes of the Trails, and other venues and received nominations for a Pushcart Prize and from the Academy of Western Artists.

I’m glad to have known Glen, but as usual when someone passes, I wish I had had more time to get to know him. I’ll close with a poem Glen wrote in 2002…

The Last RoundupI’m headin’ fer the last roundup,But it be a long way from here,My time on this ol’ ranchCan’t be much more than a year.

My wife done met her maker‘Bout thirty years ago,And I jest been a roamin’On the wild plains to and fro.

But when my time is upAnd my new gal kicks me far,I’ll be headin’ fer the Last Roundup,It’s my kind of honky tonk bar.

Jesse Ray DowellMay 7, 1952 – December 27, 2019

By Jim Kinney, Jr.

Jesse Ray Dowell, passed away Friday, December 27, 2019, at Barnes-Jewish Hos-pital in St. Louis at age 67. Jesse was born May 7, 1952, in Buffalo, Missouri. He loved boxing, fishing, ar-rowhead hunting, pool, and especially horseshoes.

Jesse was a member of the MOHPA for more than 18 years. Jesse strived to get better every time he pitched in a tournament. He won quite a few tournaments over the years, and when I pitched against him, he would never let up, no matter how he was feeling or how his day was going. Jesse always had a kind and refreshing attitude that made everyone around him feel welcome to be in the same room. For quite a few years we would know that Jesse was going to be at the same horseshoe tournament, if it was in the southern part of Missouri, because Jesse was passionate about throwing horseshoes and being around other pitchers.

Jesse was a member of the Buffalo VFW along with everything else. Jesse served in the US Navy and worked at Bolivar Insurance until he could not work anymore. He never gave up trying to do the things he loved.

Jesse was a man of few words, but you always knew by talking to him that he loved his family. He leaves behind his wife of 29 years, Shirley Dowell, three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Jesse came from a big family, with four sisters and four brothers. This made him the man he was.

Jesse will be missed by many people in the horseshoe world, his friends, and his family. He has left a legacy no one will forget. I know if Jesse has the last word, he will always be throwing that shoe for the ringer in the sky. May you rest in peace.

Julia M. JaegerDecember 14, 1931 – November 3, 2019

By Jeanette Claas

Julia Jaeger of St. Charles County, Missouri died No-vember 3, 2019, at age 87 of complications of a stroke she suffered several months ago.

Julia was raised in Mos-cow Mills and spent her entire life in St. Charles County. She graduated from Wentzville High School in 1949 and began working at age 13 to help support her mother and herself. She met her husband, Calvin (Cal), when he returned from World War II, on a blind date while she was still in high school. It must have been love at first sight, as they married on June 1, 1948. Cal loved to play baseball, and the couple started their honeymoon at Sportsman Park to see the St. Louis Cardinals. Eventually, they would have two daughters, Susan and Carol, and would later enjoy two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

It was this blind date that brought Julia into the sport of horse-shoes. After marrying Cal, she found herself keeping score for Cal and many other horseshoe pitchers throughout the years. He taught her everything he knew about horseshoes, and she became a familiar face to all. In 1998, Julia received a Longtime Scorekeepers Award from the MOHPA. Julia holds the distinction of being the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club’s only lifetime member who had never pitched a shoe; she was an “Honorary Lifetime Member.” She was a member of the NHPA for 17 years.

Julia had her share of trouble with cancer throughout her lifetime and fought this disease for more than 40 years, but this lady fought hard and overcame many obstacles. Doctors discovered Julia had adenoid cancer in 1976, when surgery and treatments were much harder. After an 8-hour surgery, Julia was left with a disfigured face and had difficulty speaking. Then came breast cancer in 2001 and again in 2011. Before her 80th birthday, Julia fell and broke her hip, but as with all her other ailments, she faced these challenges and moved on.

Cal retired from the Sand Company in 1991, and Julia retired from K-Mart in 1994. Cal began pitching horseshoes in 1964 and pitched in many leagues and was a charter member of the New Melle Horseshoe Club. After retiring, they had a 5th wheeler that they used for camping trips and tournaments. And travel they

did, to many horseshoe tournaments, including local, state, and national tournaments.

In 2009, Cal and Julia sold their home and most of their belong-ings at an auction and moved into a villa. In January 2011, Cal suddenly had a heart attack, and Julia was left to spend the rest of her life without him, but she carried on. Julia kept up her member-ship with the QRHC. She was in charge of recruiting scorekeepers for the Six Pac Tournaments, which required 32 scorekeepers for the 2-day event. It took some time to find people to volunteer, but she succeeded. Julia was a tiny lady, but one who didn’t like to take “no” for an answer. She continued to do this each year up until a few years ago.

For all the time Julia spent on the phone organizing the thing a horseshoe pitcher needs most—a good scorekeeper—we thank her. She was always very generous with contributions to the prize money. Susan, her daughter says, “She was one of the hardest working women; she always enjoyed doing things for others.” Many horseshoe pitchers can verify that statement.

She was an avid quilter and spent many hours doing quilt-ing at her church or at home. Julia was laid to rest alongside her husband, Cal, in the church cemetery. We will always remember Julia, who was a lady with a strong determination that got her through this world. She touched many lives along the way and left us with many good memories. She may be gone, but she will never be forgotten.

Dennis G. FlakeAugust 13, 1951 – December 26, 2019

By Jeanette Claas

Dennis Flake of Jonesburg, Missouri, died suddenly at 68 years of age at his home December 26, 2019, likely of a heart attack. When he didn’t respond to his wife on the cell phone, she went looking for him on their farm. She found him col-lapsed, in the barn, inside his truck.

Dennis was born and raised in Warrenton, Mis-souri. During his lifetime he dealt in real estate, cut lumber, and retired from the Binkley Manufacturing Company in 1994. He later moved from Warrenton to Jonesburg. While living there he and his wife, Rita, bred and raised Camelot Paint horses.

Mick Gillette was a good friend of Dennis’s and encouraged him to pitch shoes at the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club. Dennis was a member of QRHC for 4 years and pitched on the Men’s Wednesday night league. He pitched horseshoes with his two brothers “forever,” as his wife remembers. In the summertime, Dennis also pitched with a group of guys in Jonesburg in a non-sanctioned league. He pitched some shoes at the New Melle Horseshoe Club and with the Warren/St. Charles County Traveling League. Dennis was a

Bill Altschul and David Hattie took 1st place this summer, Johnna Bales and Becky Carter took 2nd place, and Frank Hunt and Bruce Greenfield took 3rd place. The League’s High Game Over Average was won by Johnna Bales, who pitched 30 points over her average. High Game-Points was won by Al Gwinn with 106 points, followed closely by Johnna Bales with 105. High Average-Points this year went to Al Gwinn with 89 points. Our Most Improved pitcher was Justin Gilmore. The Sportsmanship Award went to Al Gwinn, and the Rookie of the Year was Billie Sullivan.

At the end of the summer League Tournament, Class A 1st place went to Laura Johnson, 2nd to Ray Phelps, and 3rd to Keith Johnson. Class B 1st place went to Bill Altschul, 2nd to Pierce Warren, and 3rd to David Hattie. The League Tournament Grand Champion this summer was Laura Johnson.

We have several Missouri State Champions in our midst: Mi-chael Gillespie (Men’s Class D), Laura Johnson (Women’s Class A), Savanna Johnson (Women’s Class B), and Madisen Gwinn (Junior Girls). Pulling out respectable 3rd place finishes were Keith Johnson (Men’s Class E) and Pierce Warren (Men’s Class I).

Our new officers beginning January 2020 are President, Bill Altschul; Vice President/Tournament Director, Keith Johnson; Secretary/Treasurer, Nancy Gunter; Statistician/League Director, Sandra Couch; Groundskeeper, Dennis Bailey; and Tournament Refreshment Chairperson, Pam Bailey.

Capital City Horseshoe Clubby Mel Bruemmer

This year will be very busy for the CCHC. We’ll be hosting seven tournaments and sponsoring three leagues. Three of the tournaments will be very special events. The Ron Hassler Memorial Cancer Benefit tournament on May 23 will feature a very special format and a festival atmosphere. The new and improved Big Money Tournament on July 25 will surely be very exciting. The Park Stars Benefit, supporting the J. C. Parks Special Olympic Athletes, will be held September 27.

The club will host Friday fun night for the Park Stars, who really put the fun in horseshoe pitching on these evenings. We will also have the pleasure of teaching horseshoes at several youth camps during the summer. High school gym classes are also scheduled to learn the game at Washington Park.

Wrapping up the news for 2019, our fall league ended with Mel Bruemmer 1st, Leon Wolken 2nd, Jim Wheeler 3rd, and Steve Johnson 4th among the 17 participants. Our Club Championship Tournament was held in conjunction with our end-of-year picnic; congratulations go to our 2020 Club Champion, Eileen Reeves.

Come see us on our courts in Washington Park during the upcoming outdoor season. We always have horseshoes going on in Jefferson City.

Peculiar Lions Park Horseshoe Clubby Victoria Highley

Over the winter, several “Peculiar Pitchers” made the rounds to the indoor courts for tournaments. The Highley gang made our annual winter trip going to the Good Luck Courts in Bucyrus! Ron and I are headed to Omaha, Nebraska, for our An-niversary Weekend, where we will pitch in both doubles and singles tournaments. Jim Kinney Jr. is headed to North Dakota for Dakota Winter Magic, which is a 4-in-1 tournament of singles and doubles in one weekend! Our fellow travelers include George Chichura, Michael Bowman, Michael Gillespie, Warren Highley, Leroy Leabo, John Michaels, Memo Ramirez and Clint Sloan. Three Juniors/Cadets—Warren, Memo, and Addi—participated in the Santa Claus kids-only tournament at Liberty. This was Addisyn Goddard’s first tournament pitching at the official distance of 20 foot. She didn’t win a game or even get a ringer, and she shed more than a few tears at the beginning…but she made it through with her mom, Paige, walking with her every step of the way and a big cheering section as well! Sure made this Nana proud!

With spring and outdoor pitching just around the corner, make sure to come see us at our three tournaments: the Peculiar Mem-bers Memorial Open on May 23, the MOHPA Club/Team Benefit tournament on June 6 (see article on page 9 of this issue of Shoe Biz), and the ‘Tween the States Open at Peculiar on August 22. Call tournament director Paige Highley-Goddard at 816-739-0920 or Victoria Highley at 816-665-7042.

Quail Ridge Horseshoe Clubby Melanie Zerr

After a busy 2 years of hosting the State Tour-nament, things have gotten back to normal around here. We hosted the NHPA Sanctioned League Tournament on October 5 and 6. Each team included three players who had played in a sanctioned league during the past year. Quail Ridge had four teams entered, and a team from Arkansas won the championship!

Our Octoberfest Tourney, directed by Terri Loeffler, had six classes and a day full of ringers! Champions were Cathy Boyer (Class F), Andy Zerr (Class E), Don Gillette (Class D), Jeff Baldwin (Class C), Tim Henderson (Class B), and Melanie Zerr (Class A).

Jim and Carol Howard’s Fall Team Tournament was another full event! With 14 teams and several new players pitching, a fun time was had by all! 3rd place went to the team of Frank Garcia, Brandon Riley, Mark Wilkweitz, and Robert Riley (14.5 wins); 2nd place went to Angie Davis, Jill Knobbe, Rose Buehler, Norm Pierce,

Lonnie Nasalroad, Carol Compton, and Chuck Gleason (15 wins); and 1st place went to Justin Narup, Marty Willis, Tim Henderson, Tom Ray, and Ralph Thurman (20 wins)!

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, our Turkey Trot tourney, directed by Ralph Hummel, kept the ringers coming, with eight classes pitching. Our class champions included Rick Simpson (Class H), Mary Beeson (Class G), Gary Bailey (Class F), Brady Fox (Class E), Tom Ray (Class D), Paul Baehl (Class C), Tim Henderson (Class B), and Melanie Zerr (Class A).

December rolled in the Christmas Cheer with our Jingle Bell Rock Open under the direction of Gaylord Compton. Seven classes pitched, and the champions were Pat Heathman (Class G), Mike Guillaume (Class F), Rich Shackleford (Class E), Terri Loeffler (Class D), Donna Becher (Class C), Brady Fox (Class B), and Mela-nie Zerr (Class A). Our Club President, Bobby Schwent, pitched his best tournament ever, with a 55.9%! Congratulations to all!

Mark Snead ran two Youth Tournaments in November and December! Sadie Wolken (Class A) and Daniel Skirvin (Class B) were Champions for the November tourney, and Macy Zerr (Class A) and Dominic Skirvin (Class B) were the December Champi-ons! Congrats to all 10 players who participated in one of the two tournaments! If you know of any young pitchers who might be interested, we have our next Youth Tournament in February! Get them signed up!

With a storm that came in, our Monday Night Mixed League did not finish the first half of the season until January 6. More im-portantly, we didn’t have our potluck Christmas dinner until after the Holidays! Gathering with our horseshoe family is always a great time and a reminder that the sport is more than wins and losses; it’s about the moments that become memories! Happy Ringers and Good Luck to all on the Courts in 2020!

Liberty Horseshoe Clubby Dee McIntire

Happy New Year! We’re excited about our new leagues starting the second week of January and all the great tournaments we will have in 2020! Our first tournament of the year was the annual Don Harris Memorial Open, which is set up with a 40-ft Championship Class. People traveled to Liberty from far and wide to participate, includ-ing four from Wisconsin; four from Jefferson City, MO; two from Kansas; one from Nebraska; one from Bucyrus, MO; and one from Springfield, MO. What a great turnout! We even had six Juniors participate. The Tournament Champion in the 40-ft Only A Class was one of Missouri’s own, Michael Bowman, and second place went to Cole Pearson of Nebraska. In Class A (mixed) Mel Bruem-mer (Jeff City) took first, and Ray Plute (Warrensburg, MO) took second. Class B was won by Ray Gronskinsky, and Bob Kingamen took second; both came down from Wisconsin. Class C was won by Michael Gillespie, and Larry Collette of Kansas took second. Class D was won by Tim Fox; Class E was won by Hannah Johnson; and Class F was won by one of our Juniors, Marshall Morgan. It was really great to see so many fresh faces.

A Juniors-Only tournament was held in the arena during the Christmas break. Class C: 1st Nico Balistreri (his very first tourna-ment); 2nd Adrianna Furner (her first tournament at 30 ft); 3rd

Justin Furner; 4th Brett Furner; and 5th Addisyn Goddard (her very first tournament). Class B: 1st Marshall Morgan; 2nd Eli DeLaCruz; 3rd June Johnson (high ringer %, 16.25%; watch out, she may be moving up in classes!); 4th Annabelle Gray; 5th Lauren Furner. Class A: 1st Brady Fox (with a whopping 54.4%!); 2nd Memo Ramirez; 3rd Warren Highley; 4th Zane Morgan; 5th Trent Morgan. Everyone had a great time. Thanks to Elizabeth Furner for putting together and running this Junior’s Only tournament. It’s so much fun to have these tournaments, as reflected by Addisyn’s comment, “I lost all my games,” but said with a big smile!

Our Fall leagues finished the first week of December. The Mon-day morning Liberty League consisted of 14 teams and 28 players. The Champions were Brady Craven and Larry Anderson (28 wins); 2nd place went to Mike Crouch and Mark Miller (26 wins); and 3rd place went to Al Gwinn and Darrell Pulliam (22 wins). High aver-age went to Bob Booe with 102-point average, and most improved was Wayne Maggard, with a 19-point increase in his average.

The Tuesday night Liberty League had 24 pitchers in six teams. League Champions were Audra Craven, Bob Bloss Jr., Jessica Wil-son, and Hannah Johnson (41 wins). 2nd place: Savanna Johnson, Bob Mullin, Anthony Ridder, and Scott Engelmann (39.5 wins). 3rd place: Gregg Craven, Keith Johnson, Denise Bloss, and Milee Bloss (36.5 wins). High average went to Gregg Craven, with a point average of 103. Most improved went to Eli DeLaCruz, who improved her point average by 15.

The Thursday night Heart of America League had 32 pitchers and 16 teams. League Champions were Elwyn Cooper and Skip Fitzgerald. Denise Haye had the high league average with 98 points and a high point game of 121, winning her a 70% patch!

As with any large group of people, we’ve had our share of people out sick, etc. Victor Ferrera had a brain tumor removed and is doing well. He plans to return to the courts for League play. Nick DiRaimo had a hernia removed and is back at the courts support-ing Angie in her pitching. Dennis Bales is back on the courts after his hernia surgery.

We welcome everyone to come out and enjoy a League or Tour-nament at Harris Arena in Liberty. Check your Shoe Biz for a list of upcoming tournaments and give us a call! Happy Pitching!

Don’t throw me away!Keep me for future reference. I am full of useful information.

member of the NHPA/MOHPA for 6 years.Dennis also enjoyed farming, bailing hay, gardening, fishing,

going to auctions, growing tomatoes, and playing guitar, at which he was very good. He owned three guitars and could play all kinds of music. Dennis was a large man, 6 foot 6, and always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say. He never met a stranger and was sometimes known as the “gentle giant.”

Dennis is survived by his wife, Rita, a son, a daughter, and a stepson; three sisters, two brothers, and seven grandchildren. Den-nis was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Jonesburg Lions Club, and the Montgomery County Water Board.

Dennis will be sadly missed on the horseshoe courts at QRHC and by all who knew him.

Ralph PieperJanuary 14, 1931 – November 24, 2019

By Jeanette Claas

Ralph Pieper of O’Fallon died November 24, 2019, at 88 years of age at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Charles. He suffered a series of strokes within several weeks before his death.

Ralph pitched horseshoes for a long time, but he didn’t join the NHPA until 1999, when he and his wife, Joan, pitched with the New Melle Horseshoe Jack & Jill League. In 2004, he joined the Men’s Wednesday night league and earned the distinction of be-ing on the winning team six times in eight years (2004, ‘05, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10, ’11, and ’13). He received a 50% game patch and a MOHPA 10-year membership patch. Ralph also pitched in the Thursday morning day league. Ralph was a Lifetime Member of the Quail Ridge Horseshoe Club and was a member of NHPA/MOHPA for 13 years. Ralph was also active with the Knights of Columbus horseshoe pitchers for over 12 years, participating in league play and in state tournaments.

Ralph was a member of Company B, Military Police, Missouri National Guard. He served 20 years in the National Guard, retiring as a Major and transferring to the United States Army Reserve, where he served another 7 years before retiring in 1978. Ralph was a past Commander of the American Legion Post #388 in O’Fallon. He spent one day a month at Jefferson Barracks serving as a Funeral Honor Guard. Ralph also served as a volunteer fireman for the city of O’Fallon for 27 years.

He is the father of two children and grandfather of five. He and his wife, Joan, had been married since 1952 and enjoyed 62 years together before she passed away. They enjoyed traveling together throughout the years. Ralph built many homes in St. Charles County as a general contractor and owned the Pieper Cabinet Company in O’Fallon for 25 years.

Ralph lived life to its fullest, living independently until the time of his death. Of fine character, Ralph served his family, his community and country well, and the QRHC is very proud of him.

Last Shoe, from page 5 Ralph is survived by his two sons, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, St. Philippine Duchesne Assembly 4th Degree, O’Fallon Knights of Columbus Council #2269, American Legion Post #338, and the O’Fallon Historical Society. Ralph was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Connie Lou TrautweinMarch 19, 1937 – October 19, 2019

By Helen Velasquez and Dee McIntire

Connie Trautwein was born in Clay Center, Kansas, to Wayne and Fern Trautwein. She attended school in the Clay County Communi-ty schools and graduated in 1955. After suffering a stroke, she died October 19, 2019, at 82 years of age.

Connie had quite a varied working career. Sometime after graduating high school, she moved to Redondo Beach, California, where she eventually became Vice President of Data Processing at the headquarters of Teleflora (owned by none other than Raymond Burr, aka Perry Mason). She moved to Show Low, Arizona, in 1978, where she and her friend Helen Velasquez bought a small business called Hub Liquor. She became active in the local Chamber of Commerce, where her winning personality and positive influence in the community won her many honors.

Most long-time pitchers will remember Connie as always laugh-ing or smiling. Connie began her pitching career with her Dad, Wayne Trautwein, her sister, Sharon Armstrong, and her brother-in-law, Kent Armstrong. Connie loved pitching horseshoes because it gave her the opportunity to be around a lot of great people.

While living in Arizona, she resumed her pitching career with her friend Helen Velasquez. To help promote horseshoes more in the community, she organized and ran a tournament called “The Wayne Trautwein Tournament” in honor of her father. Connie moved back to Missouri in 2006 and continued her pitching career with the Heart of America Horseshoe Club, the Liberty Club, and in many tournaments.

Connie enjoyed fun and laughter and was well known for her infectious laugh. If there was an opportunity for a prank, she was 100% committed to pulling it off. She was always there to help those in need and was admired by all who knew her. If Connie was given the chance to say anything to her family and friends, she would say “Enjoy life, it’s too short, so love one another and keep on laughing...”

Team World 2020 - Let’s Go!by Mel Bruemmer

Why not? You are into horseshoes. Come enjoy 3 days filled with great horseshoe pitching and fun evenings with old and new friends.

Team World 2020 will be held May 15 to 17 in Beloit, Wisconsin. The Beloit Horseshoe Club does an unbelievable job of running this big event. The town of Beloit will welcome you with the great hospitality it is known for. You will have a horseshoe experience like no other. Players are placed on teams of 4 to 5 pitchers. The tournament consists of singles games of 40 shoes in a round-robin format against each team in the tournament. Missouri had 7 teams last year, and our goal is to have 7 again in 2020.

If you would like to be included on a team or need more informa-tion, contact Mel Bruemmer (573-821-6350 or e-mail [email protected]). Additional information is also available at www.whpa-horseshoes.com/team-world. Team World is the most fun you can have in Horseshoes. Let’s Go!

You might be familiar with the name Erika Bowman (or Erika Myler), because she was our Junior Girls State Champion in 2005 and again in 2006, but do you know Rhilynde?

Rhilynde Myler is 11 years old and in the 5th grade. She has been pitching with her mother, Erika, for 3 years now, and her favorite part about pitching horseshoes is the ringers (of course!) Rhilynde pitched in four tournaments last year, averaging 7.97%. Her tournament high was 9.16%, which she pitched in the Independence Spring Open last May. She pitched in the Holly Marie Tournament last November and placed 3rd in her class with a 7.2 ringer percentage. A year ago, in 2018, she received a “Wings of Achievement” award, at the Holly Marie Tournament, for pitching highest over average in the morning session.

Aside from horseshoes, Rhilynde likes basketball, Star Wars, and The Avengers! When Rhilynde grows up, she wants to own her own restaurant or be an artist. She really looks up to her mom, so who knows, maybe someday we’ll see both Erika and Rhilynde’s names on the same Junior Girls Championship trophy!

Franklin County Fairby Kathy Narup

Update on the Franklin County Fair in Union, MO: The four added courts are being completed, bringing our total to eight horseshoe courts. I want to thank all the men and women who make this happen and those who come out to play at the fair. You honestly don’t know how much it means to me to have everyone come out and tell me what a good tournament I run and how far some of you come to play. We have such a good time, and I cannot wait. It seems like forever, but it is only 5 months away. I am already working on getting things ready to go! I am always looking for new people to come join us. Having the beer stand available at the pits is so much fun. It’s a lot of work, but I wouldn’t change a thing. The Fair will run from June 11 to 14, and I will be posting pitching times as soon as possible. I hope you all can make it another fantastic year for us! Thanks again.

Hassler Memorial Cancer Benefitby Mel Bruemmer

The Capital City Horseshoe Club will host the Ron Hassler Memo-rial Cancer Benefit Tournament on May 23 at 1 pm. All proceeds will go to the Relay for Life team “Street Walkers for a Cause.” We will join the team members of the “Street Walkers” to produce a horseshoe festival at the Washington Park Horseshoe Complex in Jefferson City.

We will be playing this tournament the way our Hall of Fame member Ron Hassler would have wanted it to be: 40-ft and 30-ft players will be in separate classes, all classes will play to 40 points, and there will be no handicaps. Come ready to have a great time and help us raise much-needed funds to fight cancer. Call or text Mel Bruemmer at 573-821-6350 or e-mail at [email protected].

There is a 28-player maximum, so reserve your spot as soon as possible. Anyone who would like to help by judging or keeping score is also welcome.

Regional Director’s Cornerby Denise Haye

This is my first article as your newly appointed NHPA Regional Director. (My ten-ure as Publicity Director was short lived!) I’d like to thank Donna Bastel for her 10 years of dedicated service in this position. She has done an outstanding job, and I hope to continue her great work. I know from other experiences that when you hold a position for so long, things just become “natural” and you do them without much thought, but it’s difficult to remember all the nuances when transitioning to a new person. Donna has made the transition pretty seamless with her detailed documentation and organization, and she’s assured me that she’ll be there if I have questions. Thanks Donna! I ask everyone for their patience and support during this transition.

One of the things I’m noticing as I begin my own method of organization is the various methods of requesting tournament sanctioning and certification and the information being provided. I’d like to make this a more standardized approach so that I won’t have to call and send text messages or e-mails to gather all the pertinent information. I certainly don’t want to make “assumptions” about what you want or publish incorrect information on the web or Shoe Biz. As a minimum, the following information is needed: Tournament Name, Location, Contact Person/Email/Phone, and # of Class Patches. Please specify the type of patch: Tournament Champion, Class Champion, Team Champion, and/or Doubles Champion. I will be sending out a templated format soon.

It will be my goal for the next couple of years to visit each of your respective court locations. This will give me the opportunity to learn where your courts are located and to get to know you better. I look forward to working with our Zone and Tournament Directors and to meeting you on the courts! Happy Pitching in 2020, and don’t forget to invite and recruit your friends/ family/ neighbors to join us! My contact info is Denise Haye, 816-674-9411; 1811 SE Hillside Ct, Oak Grove, MO 64075.

2020 Membership ApplicationMissouri Horseshoe Pitchers AssociationNational Horseshoe Pitchers Association

The NHPA membership is a combined membership in your state and national horseshoe pitching associations. This membership entitles you to participate in NHPA-sanctioned play throughout the United States and much of Canada, wherever you meet the entry requirements for the event. You must pay your dues through the state charter where you maintain legal residence as determined by voting, tax, and/or drivers license laws. Dues are based on the calendar year. New members may pay next year’s dues after October 1 of the current year and will be eligible to participate in sanctioned events the final 3 months of the current year, as well as all of the next year.

As a member of the Missouri Charter, you will receive Shoe Biz three times a year free of charge. This will keep you informed of events within our state. Our statistician will be recording your pitching stats from all sanctioned events and will be forwarding these stats to the NHPA stats headquarters, called NatStats. These stats are updated weekly and can be accessed through either the NHPA or the MOHPA websites. To make all of this possible, your NHPA membership ID will have six digits followed by two decimals. The two decimals represent the calendar year. Your number will remain with you as long as you continue to maintain your membership.

Renew your membership electronically at www.nhpa-eshoe.com or fill in all information on the form below that applies to you and mail the application and total amount of dues to the MOHPA Secretary/Treasurer (address below). Please make checks payable to: MOHPA.
