Pretty Pinterest – Latest Shiny Object or Powerful Business Tool?
Is Pinterest the social media landscape’s latest shiny object? It attracts and distracts people – especially women – as fiercely as the latest must-‐have “bling” does! If you have not yet heard of it – you will. Pinterest is the fastest growing social network, and with over 48 million users it is now the 3rd most popular social media site. Pinterest is a way to share links and information via images associated with them, or to share beautiful, inspiring or funny photos or videos with your friends. The vast majority of Pinterest users are women and the most fascinating statistic is that Pinterest users on average purchase items they discover on the social site at a rate DOUBLE that of Facebook. Shiny object? Or powerful opportunity? If Pinterest users are simply sharing things they like with their friends, how can entrepreneurs use this for business as a marketing tool, without spamming, breaking any rules, or annoying their friends? In this eBook I share with you my core social media principles as well as how-‐to tactics for the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Pinterest user.

Karen Clark’s Core Concepts:
Pinterest CPR As a business owner with various priorities, your goal is to NOT be on social media all day. Your time is best spent seeing and talking to people. Use my Pinterest CPR strategy in about 10 to 15 minutes per day to manage your time. The same principle applies to any social media platform.
CPR = Comment, Post, Reply
This is what to aim for in a consistent routine on your social media platforms. You do not need to perform CPR on a daily basis on each of the platforms, but choose our favorite and be consistent about CPR to get the best results. For Pinterest, once a day or even every other day is fine. C = Comment Find 3 to 5 pins that other people have posted within your news feed, and leave a like or comment. You can also comment on new-‐to-‐you pins by using the Search function. Seek out pin relating to your topic. The idea is to renew awareness of you among your connections as well as make new ones, and to be interactive. Your comments should add something to the conversation whenever possible, so you can begin to build additional connections. Simply find 3 to 5 items of interest that you can comment on. If the people you comment to are your ideal prospects, even better. P = Post The key to posting on social media sites is consistency. With consistency your boards will begin to receive more comments, likes and repins. Pins can be either new material you upload directly, posts from your website or blog, or repins of other’s content you find in your home feed. When you are out on the web and come across a website or blog post your readers may be interested in, use the Pin It button in your browser (get this from Pinterest “goodies”) or find a Pinterest Share button on the site. These allow you to easily post to Pinterest using the image from the site of your choice, add your own caption if you wish and share interesting and relevant information with your audience. R = Reply At the end of the day, or when you have a chance throughout the day, check for any comments you have received on your pins You may be receiving these via email, or you can see them on the left sidebar of the home feed. The idea is that when someone speaks to you, you acknowledge him or her and respond – just like in real life – or keep the

conversation going. This is an opportunity to stand out on Pinterest because many of the larger brands to not interact, so their followers never know if they have been seen. You do not need to reply to every single comment, but at the end of the workday if you respond, those who commented will see that you have checked in, and that you are hands-‐on, and that if they interact on your boards, you will respond. This is very valuable! My goal is to always be the last one to respond in a “thread” of comments.
The 90/10 Rule It used to be that I recommended an 80/20 rule. This rule states that 80% of the items that you post to social media sites or blogs should be helpful, relevant, informative items that your readers can use whether or not that do business with you. Today, social media users are becoming more and more discerning about which businesses they patronize and online, it is easier than ever to unfollow you, hide you, or even report you for spam. You do not want that! So it is important that you make your messaging valuable to your readers. Give them something that will improve their lives in some small way. Teach them something new. Inspire them. If you do this 90% of the time, then 10% of the time when you do post a marketing message that is blatantly offering something for sale, an event, an opt-‐in opportunity, a special offer or encouraging some other transaction, they are MUCH more likely to act on your offer by buying, attending, or better yet – passing your offer on to their own networks. The reason for this is that 90% of the time you are building up trust, and in the business world of today, trust is everything. If they do not trust that their interests are at the heart of your business, they will take their business elsewhere.

PINTEREST HOW-‐TO: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED
BEGINNER
1. In general I do not recommend using a business name for your Pinterest name if you are an individual entrepreneur or microbusiness. Use your boards and pins for branding instead. If you have a small staff or a sales team with members, you will be able to create branded group boards instead of a company account. So use your real name. For larger companies who use company branding throughout other social media sites, you may start a company account instead. They function in the same way as personal accounts, but may have less engagement. People tend to interact more with people! It’s your choice.
2. Research keywords and key phrases and include them in your Pinterest profile About section. If you have not done this yet for your business, try seeking out Google AdWords Keyword Tool and type in your general topic for suggestions of other words and phrases that are popular in the search engines.
3. Rename the default boards to interesting titles, using your keywords when appropriate. Add descriptions to each board describing what people will find, using keywords whenever possible.
4. Add additional boards, of interest to you and your followers. Consider your "ideal customer" persona -‐ what things are they interested in? If your ideal client is on

Pinterest, visit her profile and see what she pins. If you blog, think of the blog categories you usually write about and make boards for those.
5. Click on each one to rearrange boards. You can drag and drop them into place in any order. Since the first 5 boards appear “above the fold” on a computer screen you can move your most popular topics to the top.
6. Include your recognizable headshot photo, not a logo or product picture, in your bio if you are using a personal account. For company accounts, a logo is OK or use the same profile image you are using on other social media accounts. Describe what you do in 160 characters.
7. If you serve a local area, include that info/keywords in your About section to optimize your profile for local searches. Ex: Serving the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
8. Connect your website, Facebook and Twitter but feel free to turn off sharing to Facebook automatically (Link to Timeline), especially if you plan to pin more than 1 or 2 items a day. You will be able to select social media shares manually on each pin.
9. Understand the Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Copyright/Trademark information on Pinterest. You only legally have permission to share photos/videos that you created, unless expressly given permission to share by the publisher. In other words, you are

liable for any infringement on anyone else’s copyright so pin and repin with care.
10. Use the Pin It Button bookmarklet in your browser to easily pin items across the web. Access it here: http://pinterest.com/about/goodies/
11. There are 4 ways to pin items: Upload an image directly, pin while browsing from the web (with your browser’s Pin It button) or by using a website’s embedded Pin It or Share on Pinterest button, or by RE-‐pinning someone else’s pin using the red Pin It button on the item.
12. In all cases, when you pin something, 1) double check that the image leads to the site you wish, or else edit the pin 2) add a description or edit an existing one if needed/desired and 3) make sure it is OK to pin.
13. Use my 90/10 rule when pinning -‐ 90% should NOT be marketing your own products and services, and 10% can. This way people keep following you and repin your items, even your promotional ones, because they trust you!
14. Comment on other people’s pins when you are compelled to – people love getting comments, it makes them feel seen and can start a discussion, just like you’d have if showing a friend a dress you’re thinking about buying, or a recipe you want to try.
15. When you repin someone’s item, that person is notified, either by email if their settings dictate that, or by seeing it in their sidebar. People like to be repinned!
16. When pinning or repinning, add a meaningful caption, ideally keyword-‐rich without keyword padding. The best captions have about 200 characters as they tend to be repinned more often.
©Karen Clark/My Business Presence. Unauthorized duplication or distribution prohibited. All rights reserved. | 707-‐588-‐9290 | mybusinesspresence.com
17. Avoid “flooding” people with several pins on the same topic all at once. Vary the items you pin, or spread them out throughout the day/week so as not to overload people with lots of things on the same topic, such as “everything yellow in the world!” Try using pingraphy.com to schedule pins into the future.
18. Use the Find Friends to add your personal Facebook friends or to invite others by email. If you have an email list for your client base, simply export the list and copy/paste the emails to invite them to follow your Pinterest boards. Check the Find Friends area regularly as more and more connections will be joining Pinterest and can be added. You might also see friend suggestions on the left sidebar of the home page.
19. You can also add people by using Pinterest’s search, or browsing other boards by categories. If someone’s pins are interesting to you, or you like their topic, follow them. Often they will follow you back. Consider cross promoting with someone who serves a similar market but is not a direct competitor.
20. Check the left sidebar on the home page to see who is liking, repining or following you. Clicking on the notice will show you their pin/board (click their name) and you can follow back if you wish.

21. Another way to add people is to click on the Follower count on your Boards profile and see whom you might want to follow back.
22. Try finding interesting people to follow and items to repin at www.repinly.com
©Karen Clark/My Business Presence. Unauthorized duplication or distribution prohibited. All rights reserved. | 707-‐588-‐9290 | mybusinesspresence.com
23. Don’t forget to look for your smart phone’s mobile Pinterest app. This is one of the easiest and quickest ways to browse and repin items.
24. When you repin others’ items, the top 3 who you’ve repinned will show to the right of your bio. Want to support a team member or prospect? Repin their items more and they’ll show up. Want to find someone interesting to follow? Visit someone’s profile and see who his or her top 3 are.
25. If you are pinning a product that can be purchased, include a $ price and a price button will appear on the image, plus the pin will be listed in the public GIFTS category. Whichever price you list first is shown as a banner across the left corner so if you are saying “Was $24, now $18” be sure to change that so the $18 is first, such as “Now $18, was $24” because the $18 will be shown. People might find your item when browsing this fun marketplace! Be sure the pin links to where they can buy it.
26. Adjust your email notifications if you’d prefer to not receive emails for activity on Pinterest, or want emails for only some things. Change this under Settings and next to your email address click Email Settings.
27. Try to pin at least 3x/week to keep your boards fresh and your followers aware of you. Daily is even better!

INTERMEDIATE
1. If you have an email opt-‐in page on your website, such as a free report or other list-‐building presence online, be sure to include an image on that opt-‐in page, and pin that page as one of your pins. This will build your list.
2. If you have a newsletter, find the "view in browser" link, visit it, then pin THAT page -‐ especially if there's a Subscribe button! Do this every time you have an ezine or other email you would like to open up to the public.
3. When you blog, be sure to include a captivating image if you’d like your post pinned. Add a Pinterest/share button widget to your blog to make it easier for readers to share your content on Pinterest.
4. Pin your own blog posts, YouTube or Vimeo videos, articles and web pages, but not all at once and not every day. Spread them out. Be sure to pin from the exact blog post or video link URL, not the main URL or channel.
5. Tag other Pinterest users by using an @ before their Pinterest user name. This will link your caption to them and also alert them they’ve been tagged.
6. When a pin isn’t share-‐worthy or wouldn’t belong on any of your boards, but you like it anyway, click Like anyway. You can find it again in your list of Likes.
7. Add a Pinterest tab app to your Facebook business Page: http://www.woobox.com/pinterest This creates an app on your Facebook Page where people can see your Pinterest posts and follow you on Pinterest.
©Karen Clark/My Business Presence. Unauthorized duplication or distribution prohibited. All rights reserved. | 707-‐588-‐9290 | mybusinesspresence.com
8. Or try Pinvolve which creates a similar app tab, but includes both your recent Pinterest pins as well as your recent visual Facebook Page posts which you can then create Pinterest pins from. http://www.pinvolve.co/product
9. If you have a blog, write a blog post inviting your readers to join you on Pinterest and explaining a little about how it is used, for the newbie’s reading. Also share about your Pinterest in other social media sites, inviting people to join you there as well.

10. If you have older content that you’d like to make visible again, repin it and then delete the original, which freshens it up. I’d say after 4-‐6 months it is Ok to recycle your pins.
11. Create a new board and mark it Secret to save things you’d like to pin later such as seasonal items that are out of season. Then visit your Secret board once in a while to grab content you’ve saved and pin them to the appropriate public board.
12. You can create a Secret Board and invite others such as team members, to use to share training items privately.

ADVANCED
1. Start creating your OWN pins – graphics, photos, or videos. The maximum width is 600 pixels – there is no limit on height and in fact studies show that taller graphics get more attention. See list of other dimensions below.
2. Make sure if you include text in your custom pin that it is large and readable even in the mobile app.
3. Consider adding a watermark or web address to photos/graphics in case someone removes your link when repinning.
4. Add a CTA (Call to Action) to pins where you’re asking them to listen to a call, download a freebie, click here, register now, etc. Adding this in text makes it more compelling.
5. See resources below for graphics/pin creation programs.
6. Create Group Boards to build community and leverage the networks of your friends/team. Create the board on a specific topic, and invite the others to contribute (you will be asked who can contribute when you set up the board). This will give your board more content and increase your exposure.

7. Try and “Pin it to Win It” contest. Outline the rules on a blog post or in an email or Facebook post. Be specific on what you want done and how you will choose the winner. See example from chloe + Isabel below. Example – Have your contacts repin 1 or more pins from a specific board that you’ve titled specifically “Pin It to Win It” and for every repin, they get one entry. You can look at the pins to see who has repinned them, and choose a random winner. Make the prize juicy and valuable to encourage more participation! A single pin is easiest but a choice of multiple pins can increase exposure as people can enter more than once. Consider adding text to your graphic identifying it as a Pin It to Win It entry and/or with branding.
8. If you already like to do contests on your blog or Facebook Page using a service such as Rafflecopter.com, add Follow on Pinterest or Repin Our Pins as additional ways to enter your contests. Ask the entry to include a link to their account or pin as proof.
9. Try a Scavenger Hunt contest either on your blog, Facebook or through email. Make a list of 10 questions people can find among your pins/boards and have them repin that pin which answers the question. To be entered in the contest they need to have repined all the items that answer the questions on your list. Have them comment or email you when they’ve done it so you can look for specific repins to verify.
10. Have a Pinterest Party – This is where you, for one day, ask everyone on your Facebook, LinkedIn, Blog etc. (pick one) to share their Pinterest URL in the comments. Then everyone participating agrees to follow and repin something from each other person. Have them click “like” on the poster’s comment when they’ve done it, so they can track which ones they’ve done.
11. Create custom board covers. The top image of each board can be set permanently as one of the pins in your board, or you can upload a NEW pin made specifically to be the cover – set it as the cover once you’ve pinned it. Consider adding some text or branding – but don’t make it too salesy! Just something descriptive using your colors/fonts. The optimum size is 222 x 227

pixels.
12. If you do have your own website/blog be SURE to 1) always include an image on every page and 2) fill in the meta title and alt text for each image – this populates the caption when people pin your site. This way YOU control the keywords/description.

Pinterest Do's and Don'ts
• DO pin a mixture of topics. DON'T pin in big bursts on the same topic -‐ especially about you or your product! This looks like spam.
• DO pin and repin others' content. DON'T pin an item leading to a bad link -‐ test it first to make sure it goes to the exact correct spot.
• DO tag other Pinterest users with the @sign when appropriate. DON'T overdo it and flood your caption with tags.
• DO comment on pins. DON'T be promotional in your comments. Ever!
• DO pin your own blog posts and product pages. DON'T over do it. Remember the 90/10 rule!
• DO pin several items a day if you like. DON'T dump with tons (10+) at a time -‐ space them out. Try using pingraphy.com to schedule posts when needed.
• DO add new boards if needed on the fly. DON'T forget to edit the board's title and description -‐ use good keywords whenever possible!
• DO add pins that depict the lifestyle your product/service provides. DON'T forget that your pins (except secret boards) can be seen by the public and are a reflection of you and your business!
