Have you ever experienced a performance that would leave a mark in your life for a long time? Have you ever felt immense energy �owing from a stage towards the audience? If you answered YES, then you've

probably heard of INMATE.

INMATE is a 5-piece creative power engine that is not afraid to push the limits. Strong guitars, striking rhythm section and powerful vocals place the band among modern new age metal groups. Creative and hard working band members developed their musical identity and style, adding a modern approach to

the metal genre. The group is known for their �rm pose and relentless persistence on stage and else-where.

From the very moment they get to the stage, INMATE radiates such charisma and power that attracts the attention of anyone present. This is not only because the music they make is so perfected but also

because anyone can feel the chemistry between all �ve members.

The highlights of their career so far, were where INMATE supported Dark Tranquillity in Zagreb and Vienna on their “Where Death Is Most Alive” tour. In addition, their �rst performances in Germany in

2010 left behind strong impressions, as well as their appearance at the Rock The Lake Festival in Austria, where Caliban acted as headliner. The most recent highlight was performing at the EasterBang festival in Austria as support for Neaera and the story continues with their upcoming shows with Brujeria and at

Metalcamp and Metalfest.

'FREE AT LAST' represents a view of matters and possible solutions for the state of apathy, devotion to life and salvation of a man against himself and against the world. While �nding our ways through life, espe-

cially at those moments where one �nds oneself at a crossroad, one has to stop, think things over and look inside of himself - sometimes it is not about society, politicians or the world around us. Often our prob-

lems start within ourselves!

“Slovenia seems to be a new metal Valhalla. Of course they have the awesome festival Metalcamp, but also a lot of upcoming bands hail from this country. One of them being Avven, a folk metal group that reviewer Sam wrote about a while ago. Inmate is another example, formed by fellow countrymen. I don’t know what metal musicians from this country do that makes them deliver strong (debut) albums, but it certainly works. Free At Last is the first record of Inmate (released in May 2012) and they’ve done a nice job.”

“Slowenien scheint wie das neue MetalValhalla zu sein. Es gibt natűrlich das tolle Metalcamp Festival, aber auch viele aufkommende Bands kommen aus diesem Land. V upanju, da bomo studijskega nadalje-vanja deležni prej kot prvenca ter da bodo naslednjič v studio vstopili s še večjo mero avtohtonih samoniklih idej, lahko prvemu dejanju le nazdravimo, skupini pa želimo še več zdravih, polnih in brezkompromisnih idej ter plodnih sodelovanj! Inmate so tokrat spodbudili prepričanje, da so dobra in svetla presenečenja možna tudi na tej strani Alp, upajmo pa, da je kaj moči ostalo tudi za nadaljnji glasbeni maraton. Inmate has proved that they are mature enough to conquer the world and that the world stages are much more to them than just a periodic destination for vacation or carrying out teenage ambitions. If dreams of most bands die away in contact with reality, I am certain that with these Styrian toilers of metal, the fire of desire will burn higher, stronger and louder than ever. We hope to get the next sequel from studio sooner than debut album and that their next visit to the studio has even more autochthonous and original ideas. “Perhaps the band sees the release of their album as 'at last', however from a perspective of a listener it came in the nick of time. It radiates optimal maturity with completion of every little detail. They are mature enough for the world scene where they have quite a few soul mates but in their own homeland are with their concept a welcome rarity. The album is a commendable product which proves that by uniting the brutal and melodic, heterogeneity can lead to homogeneity.”

Das Band ist reif genug für die Weltszene, wo es einige Seelenfreunde haben, doch in ihrem eigenen Land sind sie mit ihrem Konzept eine willkommene Selten-heit. Das Album ist ein lobenswertes Produkt, dass mit dem Verbinden vom Brutalen und Melodischen beweist, dass aus der Hetero-genität die Homogenität entstehen kann.”

Die maßgeblichen Einflüsse der INMATE-Musikanten sind schnell ausgemacht: nach dem knapp einminütigen Intro ‘Inmate’ geht die Reise schnurstracks in Richtung Göteborg. Die Slowenen können und wollen wohl auch gar nicht leugnen, daß sie die eine oder andere IN FLAMES-, DARK TRANQUILITY- und SOILWORK-Platte im Schrank stehen haben. Derbe Parts wechseln sich mit hochmelodischen Elementen ab und erinnern somit zwangsläufig des Öfteren an Anders Fridén und Konsorten. Vom stumpfen Plagiat sind INMATE allerdings ein ganzes Stück weit entfernt. Trotz der angesprochenen Paral-lelen, schafft es das Quintett hier und da eigene Duftmarken zu setzen, die das Dargebo-tene angenehm auflockern. Die involvierten Mucker sind zwar augenscheinlich noch recht jung, gehen das Unternehmen jedoch erfreulich professionell an, so daß ‘Free At Last’ in der Endabrechnung ein in sich stimmiges Debütalbum geworden ist. Hinter der hierzulande noch rechtunbekannten Band Inmate verbergen sich fünf Herren aus Slowenien, die eineMischung aus Melodic Death und Modern Metal zocken. Die Tatsache, dass das Quintett schon seit einigen Jahren zusammen auf der Bühne steht, zahlt sich aus, denn für eine Erstveröffentlichung ist auf FREE AT LAST einiges geboten: Prägend für den Sound von Inmate sind die verspielten Gitarrenmelodien und der beschwingte, flotte Schlagzeugrhythmus. Außerdem lebt die Band von der typischen Melo Death-Mischung aus Growling und einer Prise Klargesang, die in Stücken wie dem spannungsgeladenen ‘Without Warning’ und dem folgenden ‘Written In Blood’ besonders gut zur Geltung kommt. Auch die Kracher ‘Angels’ und ‘Lost In Words’ sind gut hörbare Lieder, die Spaß machen, nur leider den Ohrwurmcharakter etwas vermissen lassen. Abgesehen von der mangelnden Abwechslung, ist das auch das größte Problem des Albums: Die Songs klingen gut, bleiben aber nicht allzu lange im Kopf. Insgesamt bieten Inmate keine großen Überraschungen, die Slowenen präsentieren sich auf FREE AT LAST jedoch als handwerklich ansehnliche, eingespielte Truppe mit ordentlichem Debüt. (Katrin Riedl)
