Very high performance 5-axis machining centres

KX Five (5-axis) machining centres enjoy the benefits of Hurons expertise in the design and manufacturing of high-speed milling machines. This range of very high performance machines is suited to roughing and finishing work in five simultaneous axes and on five faces and meets all the technical and economic challenges facing engineering companies in the Aeronautics, Automotive, Medical and Energy sectors with regard to reducing process times and cutting manufacturing costs. Performance levels in roughing, finishing and precision work enable the toughest productivity targets to be met in terms of machining complex parts, such as injection moulds, aeronautical components or parts used in precision mechanics. The architecture of the K3X 8 Five high-speed 5-axis milling centre consists of a fixed gantry and bed and a 500 mm diameter table that rotates (C-axis, 360°) and tilts (A-axis, -30°/+180°) and can take up to 250 kg. It is therefore capable of machining in five continuous axes on five faces. As the table on this new generation “8 Five” is inclined in a 55° plane (instead of 45°), negative machining angles of up to -20° can be reached. Consequently, the angle of the spindle axis in relation to the table ranges from 0 to 110° compared with 90° for the previous generation. The combination of dynamics and precision on this machine results in the production of very high quality surface finishes. With its standard spindle reaching a speed of 24,000 rpm with a torque of 40 Nm for 25 kW, it has a high maximum chip-forming capacity. This milling centre also offers the advantage of great accessibility with good visibility of the work area. Heavy workpieces can easily be lowered from above the machine thanks to the generous openings in the enclosure.

Power, Speed and Precision... for more than one application! To fulfil the expectations of the most demanding customers, Huron has developed the MX line of multifunctional milling centres. These highly flexible centres can, in a single setup, perform the most complex machining operations in five axes and on five faces, from roughing to finishing, by milling or turning. The MX series is available in several versions. Essential criteria such as excellence in performance, reduced production times, the most compact machine footstep, full machine automation, and optimization of the customers investment by providing an All-in-One machine make this line a must-have in terms of cutting-edge technology. Its high-spec cast-iron moving column structure increases machine rigidity and dampens the vibrations produced by cutting forces in the toughest materials. Rigidity and geometric stability are reinforced by the equal-load ground anchor points. The linear axes are equipped with ballscrews with an expansion compensation system. Low-friction roller bearing shoes are provided for the guideways. Automatic greasing of the ballscrews and shoes reduces cutting fluid contamination considerably. The table is equipped with a torque motor. High locking and holding torque and the rigidity of the design mean that high power can be used for roughing work. The torque motor-powered head is mounted on a 45° plane enabling it to be tilted from -45° to +180°. Excellent spindle characteristics (torque, power and speed) ensure maximum chip-forming capacity on roughing, and outstanding precision and machining quality on finishing contours and profiles. The machining vibration monitor ensures safe work for the machine components and the tool. The MX is equipped with a 48-slot tool magazine as standard. This is installed outside the work zone. The machine has a full enclosure for complete protection of the machining zone, the operator and its environment. The door opening provides comfortable access to the table and workpiece. Furthermore the optional palletizer helps reduce idle time by loading/unloading workpieces as a background task. The model shown is the MX 10 MT. This is a milling/turning version which can machine parts weighing up to 2000 kg, with 1200 x 1200 x 1000 mm strokes and a two-position palletizing system with a 1000 mm diameter turning pallet. The table rotates at a speed of 500 rpm with a design offering very high acceleration rates. The milling head is a fork type (optional) with a single axis of rotation. The B-axis, parallel to the Y-axis, can be used to tilt the spindle around a horizontal axis. The axis comprises a torque motor linked directly to the rotating parts to ensure play-free travel and highly accurate positioning.

TurnMill Centre The TMC series is a range of high-technology, high-performance TurnMill Centres. The rigid monoblock 45° slant bed is made from superior quality cast iron to guarantee exceptional rigidity and cutting conditions and very high productivity. According to the finite-element analysis, bed stability is achieved throughout the structure to ensure very high torsional rigidity. Vibration damping helps produce a better surface finish even when machining hard materials. The headstock is made from FG 260 micrograin cast iron and is finned to improve heat dissipation. With its powered 12-tool rotary turret, TMCs can mill, drill and turn in a single adjustment with no additional operations. They permit the combined use of fixed and motor-powered tools with a drilling diameter of 20 mm and an axial length of 125 mm. The machine is equipped as standard with a manually adjustable tailstock with hydraulic quill locking. A programmable automatic tailstock is available as an option. Pneumatic or hydraulic bar feeders ensure continuous production without human intervention and limit downtime. The external workpiece collector facilitates automation and allows the operator to perform other tasks. The automatic tool setting function enables the TMC to be used safely without an operator. As a result, the machine can parameterize precise tool data and even detect tools that are worn or broken in operation.

For quick and easy milling! Years of High Speed Machining experience have resulted in the creation of the SX series – small machines dedicated to the fast machining of mass-produced small parts. The bed/gantry structure with a cross saddle travelling along the three linear axes guarantees a high level of precision and dynamics by limiting the masses in movement which lie outside the work zone. This configuration is perfectly suited to the small and medium-scale production of precision components. Rigidity is ensured even at high speed by the roller guideways on all axes. The sloping wall bed design helps discharge swarf effectively to the conveyor at the rear of the machine. The SX 6 axes travel 500, 400 and 400 mm. A perfectly integrated automatic workpiece changer rotates the work zone in four seconds. The changer has two 650 x 400 mm tables with a dimensional capacity of 375 (D) x 500 (L) x 450 (H) mm and a load capacity of 300 kg for the workpiece. The changer is activated by hydraulic devices for rotation and locking. A Hirth gear coupling guarantees excellent rotational positioning accuracy. This design helps meet productivity requirements by eliminating idle times on workpiece loading and unloading. It can be mounted on a production line or in a machining cell. It can be combined with a workpiece loading/unloading robot interface for continuous, fully automated operation without supervision. The standard version of the SX is equipped with a 16-slot disc-type tool changer with very fast tool change times of the order of 1.5 seconds. The basic 12,000 rpm electrospindle with its 50A HSK attachment is the heart of the machine. The thermal stability of the spindle is perfectly controlled by cooling equipment. Due to its outstanding acceleration, maximum speed is reached within one second, helping to reduce machining time. Space availability is no longer an issue thanks to the small footprint of these machines, making the SX 6 an ideal model for small production shops.

A high performance, ultra-versatile milling concept! The performance and versatility of machine tools make an important contribution to the competitiveness of production companies. Machines in the EX series are capable of performing numerous tasks with highly accurate dynamic positioning and mechanical and thermal stability of the structural components. The technological choices adopted for the EX milling centre range have resulted in a universal machine offering a high chip-forming capacity on the one hand, and high speed machining for surface finishing on the other. These machines are capable of working complex shaped parts in 3, 4 and 5 axes, in light or hard materials, while meeting the stringent demands of mechanical production sectors. Applications range from small complex components to large-sized parts. Based on a highly rigid architecture, the EX 20 P (model shown) is equipped with linear guide rails, encoders and a fast, powerful spindle rotating at 14,000 rpm (25 kW/250 Nm). The chip-forming capacity is very high in even the hardest steels. The EX has a moving column with a fixed table. A rotary table and pendulum work are proposed as options. The axis strokes are 1600 x 800 x 800 mm with a 2000 x 750 mm fixed table supporting a weight of 3500 kg. Various types of head are available to ensure versatility and flexible use. The linear axes reach traversing speeds of 30 m/min and give this machine an extra advantage by allowing the user to work in a single direction and reposition at high speed. The outcome is a better quality surface condition. Capable of performing roughing, semifinishing and finishing work on shaped workpieces, the EX milling centre fulfils the expectations of mould makers and turbine blade manufacturers and is perfectly suited to machining single parts or medium-scale production runs. The requirement and quality criteria surrounding its design and manufacture are precisely those sought by the mould industries and are arousing tremendous interest in the fields of aeronautics and the automotive industry.

The very high level of machining precision combined with a high chip-forming capacity, and the degree of reliability allied with easy maintenance help make the EX the new benchmark in milling centres.

Automated vertical turning! The vertical turning and milling centre, equipped with an automatic workpiece loading system and high-speed electrospindle, is perfectly suited to mass production. With a modular tooling concept, this machine is capable of performing a variety of operations in a single setup, such as turning, milling, drilling, tapping and even grinding. This range can easily replace horizontal single-spindle machines with loading gantries or robots due to its simplicity and small footprint. The inverted chuck architecture, keeping the front space free to accommodate all types of customized tooling, makes this a unique machine. The frame is a robust, single-piece structure to hold all moving and stationary components. Loading and unloading operations are made considerably easier by the automatic workpiece loading feature. A conveyor system comprising 22 plates centres and positions the workpiece below the turning chuck. These centring systems can be adapted on request to the geometry of the workpiece to be machined. The machine is equipped with a 12-station rotary turret. Due to the flexibility of the turret, on which all stations are motor-powered, several machining operations can be programmed in a single setup. The mandrel can move in three linear directions. This machine structure opens the door to the machining of all types of geometric shapes and derives maximum benefit from the combined milling and turning opportunities. During machining operations, swarf is removed via a conveyor and deposited directly in a bin positioned at the rear of the machine.
