--Whitney Point's wrestling

team finally joined Jeff Glezen on the top .step at the Walton's Christmas Tournament last night. and tonight at Windsor High it could verv well be John F. Kennedy High of Bellmore, L.l., doing likewise in the steps of Steve Hunte and-or Rich Lubell.

JFK, an also.ran behind fellow-Islander Lindenhurst the last two years at Windsor des· )>ite individual titles each time for Hunte and Lubell. this time enters the semifinals with a 51.-i-point lead .on the field and three more survivors (10) than anyone else.

Canandai~ua is runnerup

both in points And semifinalists, while Vestal joins Lindenhurst a ad Homer as the onlv others in the 15-school field with as manv as 5 survi-

vors.

Consolations and finals begin at 6:l> tonight and JFK coach John Schaffer would love to be as fortunate as Whitney Point's Frank Sn~·der, who already had Walton's Cuneen-Doane Me morial Tourney clinched before the evening card began.

While state-champion Hunte is a strong favorite to become Long Is land's firs t 3-time Windsor champion at 138 (there've been seven in 15

at years, all from here in Section 4), Lubell would have to upset another state titleholder, Dan Hunt of West Genesee, to win at 119. (Twin Dan Lubell , a one-time champ, is top·seeded at 145. )

Glezen became onlv the third 3-timer in the Walton tourney's shorter history, and, being a junior like the Luhells, he can surpass Walton grad Harold Neale and Delhi 's Don Jones by repeating next year - when most of his team· mates also will return.

Top seeds won at Walton in eve r~· class except 119, a breakthrough by third-seeded Whitney Pointer Rick Wade,

and a general upheaval at 177 where the top-seeded 1-Z of Dan Sturdevant and Alan Robinson were pinned in the semis. Sturdevant-stuaner Marty Klucka of Catholic Central was in turn pinned by Hancock's Ernie McEirov in

• the final.

The tourney's dual Outstanding Wrestler Awards went to Glazen for the six upper weights and to Jeff La· Vare of Harpursvme, who pinned his three opponents in a combined time of 5 minutes illld 35 seconds.

While the Susquenango As· sociation rode high at Walton (Susquehanna Valley having been even-money 'in pre-tourney forecasts ). the Sus five schools at Windsor didn't have that kind in the two opening·

.. day rounds. They go into the semis with a combined 9 survivors, not as many as JFK's personal cluster, even though three still are top-seeded: Chenango Forks' Tim Jenks (155) and Dale Schmidt and· Sidney's Ken Doi (105).

1\tost prominent Sus losses along the way were second· seeded Forksers Alan Lynch, victim of a JFK boy's late ' '5-point play," and Fred Trumbach, and low third seeds: Jim Cole and John Mazzarella of Sidney. Greg Macomber of Deposit and teammate Dennis Decker, the latter simply not showing up for the tourney.

Only top seed beaten during the da\' was East Rocbestt.•r

Though Windsor in a ll likelihood wlll not be the site next year. athletic di rector Dean Gmnlhcr predicts that the tourney will not die - Ithaca High is one . rhool interested in taking it O\'Cr and Guinther plans to find if B1:1oome County Vetera ns Arena ma nager Charley Thcokas is interested.

One s~tator boping loudly that this isn't the end was Os· wego State coach Jim Howard. who while at Windsor began it in l!l>i - when. as he wi. trully recalled last night.· he sent out 26 invitations in hopes of fillang a 16-team field. wound up with 2l sending entries and competition goang on ttll 2 a rn. • •
