We are now halfway through the golf season at Avon Valley and it certainly has been a year of challenges. The late opening combined with the coldest spring in years left our early financial results below what our budget had projected. Summer eventually (& fortunately) happened, business picked up and we started to make gains and had pretty much caught up to last year’s numbers- when out of the blue on July 4-5, tropical storm Arthur suddenly hit. We experienced a lot of damage to trees but fortunately, very little to the buildings except loss of a few shingles off the Clubhouse. Dean, his crew and some outside contractors worked long hard hours to get the course opened soon as possible. Special thanks as well to our volunteer members who also helped out, we definitely needed your assistance. We thank everyone for the result, i.e. that we were closed for only 3½ days, much less than some other Clubs. The felled trees are going to have to be replaced and unfortunately this is not covered by our insurance. Extra costs and lost revenue are the way of life at a golf course and we just have to make it up as the year progresses. I am confident with the action plans we have in place and some reliable help from the weather, we can expect to recover from this setback and be on track by mid-August. We held a very successful Junior Invitational here early this month (see pp 10-11) and the players had high praise for the condition of the course. A number of them mentioned it was in as good a shape as any they'd played and better than most. These comments are also echoed by our green fee players, confirming that if we continue to put a high quality product on the market, we'll continue to be successful. Accolades to Brad, Dean and staff for their efforts. We held the Community Hospital event on July 11 th and although the attendance was down slightly the enthusiasm for the conditioning of the course and the comments on the quality of the food reflected well on the day. The organizers of the tournament are confident the numbers will be up for next year’s event. Special thanks to Robert and his staff and especially for the Foundation's volunteers and sponsors for making this year’s tourney a success. The storm has delayed our ability to complete some of the improvement plans outlined here last month but I can assure we'll deliver over time. Till next month, tee them high and let them fly!!! General Manager's Report

As Ross noted in his report, tropical storm Arthur resulted in a fair bit of damage- see pictures of just a part of it on p 12. We lost a number of trees, the most notable being the big "target" spruce on hole 16. It takes a lot of years to grow any tree and it's particularly difficult to lose so many in one day. We also had a lot of broken and hanging limbs that created a safety hazard. I cannot recall a storm of the magnitude hitting at this time year. We want to particularly thank the members who came to help with the clean up- there was a lot of raking to do and your help was greatly appreciated. In addition to our own crew and help from members, we also needed to engage some outside help

with the clean-up. We felt it was money well spent to get the course open in a timely manner. We hired two tree climbers to remove all the safety issues caused by broken and hanging limbs. That notwithstanding, full recognition for the co-operation of our grounds staff, as the entire crew agreed to work long hours on the weekend to help get the course open. Dean in particular made a big sacrifice by pulling out of the NS Amateur to help with the clean-up noting he was in contention for a spot on the team. Financially the club is on pretty solid ground. Revenue is slightly off last year, but expenses are down helping to offset the shortfall. The result is that our year bank balance is slightly better than last year. Hopefully the rest of the season will see good weather. In closing I would like to thank all the staff for their hard work and dedication. I feel very fortunate to have such a great team to work with. I would like to thank the Board for their guidance and support. To all members who have volunteered with our in house events and our two Invitationals thss month, thank you for giving your time to make this a better Club. Finally, as always, my door is always open, so please feel free to drop in. Without input to steer us straight, it's harder to improve.

Survey- the way forward for the Avon Go Round

As indicated in the June 2014 Avon Go Round, there's been discussion as to whether or not there is a need for a monthly May-November newsletter given the Club's other channels of communication (email, the Club's website, Twitter and Facebook accounts). The Board decided to put the question to the membership The upside of having a newsletter is that it captures a monthly record of events which over each season, collectively constitute an annual word-and-picture record of many of the Club's activities (tournaments, weekly series, Fun Nights, status reports, shareholder matters, etc). In print format, they're accessible to members who are not electronically connected- and they're a nice takeaway souvenir for our many outside tournament players and visitors. They're also archived on the website's newsletter and back issues which they can be retrieved and reviewed at will. If we relied solely on our in-season website and social media postings for information, our records would be lost as the posts constantly churn over, are updated, over-written, deleted, buried and forgotten altogether as they fall deeper into the growing queue of new posts- all this as a function of the designed-in transient nature of social media itself. Dollar considerations aren't much of an issue. A few years back, the sales of newsletter ad space was a modest source of revenue for the Club, and even now our diminished ad revenues exceed the cost of printing- noting that printing

costs are lower than in the past because layout is done in-house as opposed to past practice of paying for this. Bottom line, not having it printed might save the roughly $1200 spent annually on printing, but there would be absolutely no additional impact on the time & effort related to producing each issue for electronic distribution. In the long run, we'd probably end up producing photocopies for "off-line" members, and our visitors would no longer have the newsletter as a souvenir. And quite possibly we might see ad revenues fall even further due to reduced distribution. Finally, there's the form and content of the newsletter itself. We don't have a wide range of contributors- just the Director (and Mrs.) Match, the GM, the President and the Director, Publicity for editing, layout, contests, spot pics & fillers. The Pro Shop and a few members contribute updates to the weekly Men's Ladies' & Thursday Seniors website reports which are also used in the newsletter, and there are occasional spot pics/ reports from the Pro Shop & other Directors. All members have a long-standing invitation to contribute (see the 2nd page of each issue and the website Newsletter page)- but other than contest entries, we've received only one contribution of any substance in the past several years. As a consequence of this limited input and the cyclical nature of the Club's activities, it's probably fair to describe the newsletter as having become predictable from month to month. Time for the questions:

To assist in determining future directions for the newsletter, please answer the following questions as applicable:

1) Noting the Club's commitment to continue normal publication for the balance of 2014, in your opinion should the Club continue publication of the Avon Go Round in future years?

YES NO (if "No", please provide rationale)

2) If YES, with what frequency? (currently May- October in print, plus November online-only): options could be every second month, twice a year, once annually, other

3) In your view, what could or should be done to make the Avon Go Round more relevant and interesting?

I am a Member Visitor (Optional) Your name Respond by printing & completing the above questionnaire, then hand it in to the Pro Shop: use an envelope if you wish to remain anonymous. Please reply by September 15, 2014. If you prefer, answer the above questions by that date by sending an email to [email protected]: your identity will not be disclosed and your confidentiality will be maintained. Summary results of this survey will appear in a future issue.

Match (cont) 2014 One Club & Putter Results

The annual One Club & Putter competition sponsored by Gary Nelson of Nelson Law was again this year a popular event, with 22 couples participating. This can come as no surprise, as what's not to enjoy- fun, fellow golfers, family and friends who after nine holes of play celebrated together in the Clubhouse with great food, drinks and enjoying lots of interesting tales of adventures on the course. Lots of prizes, for skill at either golf or winning by draw.

Congrats to Avon Valley member winners Lorraine Purcell and Robert MacPherson with a score of 48.

…and the low Member/ Non-member winners Bill Butler and Catherine MacDonald with a score of 54.

High scorers Russell Allen & Trish Curry after their practice round for next time when they'll win it all!

A good roomful of people

Thanks to our Dining and Pro Shop staff for their great service, and to all members and guests who participated. We hope you had a fun evening and that you can join us for another in August. Look for notices soon on the Avon Valley website and in the Clubhouse. Wayne Northup, Match

Tropical storm Arthur…

… took down tree between #2 forward tee & #8 green

… shortened the willow by #8 bridge

… destroyed a residence behind 13 green

… took down the monumental target tree behind 16

and did much more damage. Could have been worse, but we're already getting past it.

What??? from Where???

How it's played: Each month we print part of a photo (last month's is below) and invite your guess of WHAT is being pictured FROM WHERE on the grounds. The winner of a $5 certificate is then selected by draw from among the acceptable entries- i.e. those that best identify both the what that's being pictured and the from where the pic was taken. The May contest had only one entry…

… and the answer is- What? the 17th green…From where? looking back from

between back of 10th green & 11th tee

The winner of the June contest is Don Maling, congrats- the Pro Shop will be asked to issue your certificate.

At left is the July 2014 pic, taken June 26- you might not normally be looking in this direction, the tractor got my attention that day. Anyway, as always, you can check it out in full colour in the on-line Avon Go Round once posted. The full-size pic measures 5152 x 3864 pixels in the original, from which the 2300 x 1150 pixel contest pic has been cropped, then re-sized (in proportion) as at left.

Have fun... & make sure your entries (see below) are in by the deadline for the next issue i.e. August 15, 2014.

This year marked the 19th year for Hants Community Hospital Golf Fundraiser at Avon Valley. We are proud of our long association with Hants Community Hospital and their Foundation, and of being able to assist in contributing towards the purchase of all the valuable equipment that the Hospital has been able to acquire partially as a result of this annual event. Golf has a proud heritage of raising money for charitable, cultural and sports organizations, all of which goes to making a difference in our communities.
