PRESIDENT'S PIECE Gwyn Williams
Hullo from the President
Hopefully, you all came through the earthquake OK. Apparently, just a single breakage at the rooms, which is pretty amazing given all the pots sitting on racks all over the place. I was walking on the beach at the time of the quake. The whole beach swayed. Disconcerting.
By the time you read this, the anagama kiln will probably be getting loaded. The firing takes five days and nights. Check out our Facebook page for photos of last year‟s firing.
There‟s a lot more happening in August apart from the anagama. The Tuesday evening pottery class starts early August and run for 8 weeks. There‟s a pit firing and then a big pottery sale at the rooms. August 17 and 18th. Cash and carry. Tell your friends.
September brings our annual exhibition. You have to be a member to enter, so make sure your subscription is up-to-date. (Renewal forms will be sent out with the Exhibition entry forms.) The exhibition will again be held at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts. It will open on the 13th and run until the 23rd. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful exhibition space. Many thanks to the director Warren Feeney and the Academy staff for making this possible.
And thanks to the hardworking team of exhibition organisers (if anyone wants to help out, get in touch).
Then in October, there‟s our Annual General Meeting. All members are welcome to attend this. It‟s a chance to have a say. It will again be preceded by the Potters Olympics, which last year was hilariously good fun.
There‟s a notice later in the newsletter about the AGM. A few people are stepping down from the committee or retiring from their positions. One is me. Time to give someone else a go at the presidency. We will also need to elect a new treasurer, with Janine Collier, who has done a wonderful job, off to the USA. And we‟ll probably need a vice-president as well.
So now‟s your chance! If you‟ve been itching to sit on the committee and help decide how the club is run, then put yourself forward. The club is always keen to get new people involved. Some of the current committee have been around for a long time, and they are very keen to pass on their knowledge and to give someone else a go. Get in touch with me or another committee member if you want to talk about it.

Note: The main rooms will be closed while the selection is going on - that is Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 September. (The glaze room will be available.)

Making and entering your best pots
Help distribute leaflets
Attend the opening
Help mind the exhibition. This is a great chance to have a good look at the pots and also the associated artworks in the Academy exhibition running alongside ours
Please Note: If you enter pots in the exhibition you are expected to also take a turn at minding it. So, when you bring in your pots on Sunday, 15 August you will asked which day you will be available for the roster.

All WPA members are invited to attend the club‟s AGM. The meeting will be preceded by the Potters‟ Olympics (more info on this closer to the time).

A couple of notes about the election
The officers of the Association shall be a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.
In addition there shall be a further six elected members who together with the immediate past president (ex-officio) shall comprise the Committee (WPA Rule 9).
Nominations of officers or of members of the Committee may be made at, or before the Annual Meeting, but no person shall be nominated unless he or she is either present in person, or has consented in writing to stand for the position (WPA Rule 13).

CONTAMINATION OF CLUB GLAZES
When you‟re using the club glazes could you please take great care not to get colours straying into the wrong buckets. It has been very hard to keep a clear glazes clear over that last few batches as they quickly turned into a milky white, or now the latest bucket of clear mixed up by Matthew has turned into a cream. Well perhaps someone wanted a cream but this not the way to achieve it! Matthew is about to mix up another bucket of clear. Please respect the fact that a lot of volunteer time and club resources is taken up by glaze making and take more care in the glazing room.
Also please take care that glazes that you purchase do not contain lead. If you really must use them, please do not apply them at WPA so that we can keep the lead out of our glaze recycling.

A reminder for all potters to make yourselves available to support our fund raiser in any or all of the following ways:

Circulate leaflets from the box in the rooms

PIT FIRING SATURDAY 10 AUGUST 2013
Starts at 10am with construction of the kiln
Bring along: Several „bisque-fired‟ clay forms for the firing (large and small pieces), and food to share for lunch. Dry kindling always welcome.
Cost: The cost is minimal - $10 per person to cover materials.
Tutor: Francesca Costa has facilitated many workshops in this process; both at Auckland Studio Potters, and Wellington Potters Assn. Please contact Francesca on 027 678 6006 to confirm your attendance and for any queries regarding preparation for this firing. See you there!

APPLICATIONS FOR POTTER-IN-RESIDENCE FOR 2014-15
Wellington Potters‟ Association (WPA) invites applications for the position of Potter-in-Residence. The position is open to potters/ceramists at solo exhibition level. The potter-in-residence will have use of a designated mezzanine studio space. Applicants may apply to occupy the studio for a term of either one or two years.
The potter-in-residence will not be expected to pay for use of the studio but will be required to:
be in residence for an average of 20 hours per week and for at least 40 weeks during each 12 month period of the appointment;
oversee the use of the kilns and take responsibility for weekly club firings;
be available during attendance at the rooms as an educational resource for WPA members;
be fluent in English;
pay all costs of the production of his/her work;
donate two weekend educational sessions in his or her area of specialty to WPA each year;
be or become a member of WPA and participate in club activities.
If you wish to apply for the position, please include the following in your application:
a CV and brief biography;
an overview of what you hope to achieve during your term as potter-in-residence;
an overview of the contribution you would make to WPA during your term as potter-in-residence;
an overview of what you could cover in the weekend educational sessions;
photos of your work.

WPA will offer the successful applicant use of the studio at 130 Grant Road, Wellington for either one or two years, at its discretion. The period of use will run from 1 January to 31 December 2014 or from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2015. There is no automatic right of renewal. If a two-year term is approved, a review will be conducted on or about the anniversary of the appointment. The outcome of that review will determine whether the appointment will continue for the second year.
If a person is appointed, the appointment will be made by not later than 31 October 2013. WPA will enter into a formal agreement with any appointee.

ANOTHER PAYMENT OPTION FOR CLAY PURCHASES AND KILN FIRINGS NOW AVAILABLE
You will have noticed we‟ve made some changes to kiln firing slips (including colours!) and there is a new “Banking Slip” (yellow). To make your life a little easier, we have started trialling internet banking payments from members for purchases of clay or kiln firing fees. Of course we will still accept cash and cheques.
The kiln firing slips (club firing is a green slip, private firing blue) now include a box to tick when you intend to pay by internet banking. The yellow slip is your reminder note for you to take away with you of what you owe, what it was for (e.g. kiln fees, clay) and WPA bank account details. Hopefully the slips are self-explanatory.
To make sure we are completing our accounts correctly, and so we can allocate funds accurately, we will need you to tell us a few things when you do your internet banking payment. In the “Particulars” box, we will need to know your name and in the “Code” box we will need to know what you are paying for (eg kiln fees, clay). Use the “Reference” box too if you need more room to explain.
We appreciate people paying promptly and in full. We‟ll be reconciling regularly and if you are tardy in your payment don‟t be surprised if you get a phone call or e-mail from me as a reminder. We may remove the internet banking option if we have to chase too many late payments.
