The year of the plan“It’s a God thing.”

You hear that simple phrase around campus often. It’s

an explanation that students use for things – good

things – that they can’t explain otherwise.

Annual reports, such as this one, are filled with facts

and figures – all of them designed to show how much

God truly has blessed Indiana Wesleyan University. And

the past year has been no exception.

The story of IWU, not just last year but for the past

several years, could easily be summarized with that

four-word phrase, “It’s a God thing.”

This year’s annual report focuses on the University’s

recently drafted strategic plan with its various

initiatives to move IWU forward in the 21st century.

We sense that God was in the midst of that yearlong

planning process. So, whatever happens as a result of

the University’s strategic planning, we can honestly say

it was “a God thing.”

Indiana Wesleyan University, an evangelical Christian comprehensive

university of The Wesleyan Church, was founded in 1920 and is committed

to liberal arts and professional education through undergraduate and

graduate programs.

Indiana Wesleyan is the fastest-growing university in Indiana and

has become the largest independent university in the state in student

headcount. The University also is the largest of the 180 member institutions

in the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.

Traditional students attend classes on Indiana Wesleyan’s 350-acre campus

in Marion, Indiana. Most buildings on Indiana Wesleyan’s main campus

have been built in the last 20 years, so students live and learn in state-of-

the-art residence halls and classrooms.

Indiana Wesleyan offers more than 70 undergraduate majors, and an

increasing number of honors students has led to the creation of an

academically accelerated honors college program for traditional students.

The University has received national attention for its innovative adult

education programs, which began in 1985. IWU recently established the The

Research Center in Adult Learning, which is a joint project with the Council

for Christian Colleges & Universities.

Adult education programs are offered online and at more than 100

locations – including 14 regional campuses – in Indiana, Kentucky and

Ohio. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in business,

nursing, education, ministry and counseling. IWU also offers a doctorate in

organizational leadership.

In the last year, Indiana Wesleyan has received national recognition for

both its quality and affordability. And with employment now exceeding

1,000, the University also has been honored by two organizations as a

best place to work.

Indiana Wesleyan honors Colts Coach Tony Dungy

Tony Dungy, head coach of the Super Bowl Champion Indianapolis Colts, became the fifth person inducted into Indiana Wesleyan University’s Society

of World Changers. He also received an honorary Doctor of Humane letters degree during an all-campus convocation attended by 2,400 students and faculty members.

“To receive this honorary degree, I can’t tell you what it means,” Dungy said. “It’s quite humbling. Not much qualified me as a World Changer. My objective is to develop young men to perform their jobs and to connect with the city of Indianapolis.”

Dr. Henry Smith, IWU President, said Dungy was not honored for his success as a coach or author.

“As intriguing and stellar a career as Tony Dungy has had in sports, both as a professional football player and a coach, today he comes to us as a world changer,” Smith said. “There is no doubt in the minds of those who know him and who have seen him in action that he is a family man of great faith and Christian character.”

In addition to his success as a coach, Dungy also is the author of Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices and Priorities of a Winning Life, which was on The New York Times Best Seller list for several months.

The Society of World Changers recognizes people who use their professions to serve as the salt and light of their generation.

David Wright named IWU’s first provost

Dr. David Wright, a former professor and administrator at Indiana Wesleyan University, returned to the Marion campus to become IWU’s

first provost and chief academic officer. For the last three years, Wright was Dean of the School of

Theology at Azusa Pacific University in Southern California. Previously, he served for 11 years at IWU in a variety of leadership positions, including Vice President for Adult and Graduate Studies.

“I am absolutely convinced that David possesses the gifts, graces and passion to serve with distinction as our Provost and Chief Academic Officer,” said Dr. Henry Smith.

“David is uniquely prepared to provide outstanding leadership for all facets of academics at IWU from adult degree completion, to graduate programs, and to our traditional-aged students. I believe that God has prepared him for this assignment – and he feels led back to his alma mater,” Smith said.

Wright will be a member of IWU’s executive leadership team and will serve as the senior academic administrator for the University’s three academic units.

Wright earned his bachelor’s degree in Christian Ministries from IWU in 1977. He also has a master’s degree in Biblical Studies from George Fox University, Portland, Oregon, and a Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies from the University of Kentucky.

IWU to host adult research CenterIndiana Wesleyan University, which has received national attention for its innovative adult education programs, has been chosen by the Council for Christian Colleges &

Universities as home for an international center to study adult learning. The Research Center in Adult Learning will be a joint effort

between IWU and the Washington, D.C.-based Council, a higher education association of 180 Christian institutions around the world.

A major purpose of the Center is to increase the knowledge base in adult education by establishing a research agenda that engages the academic community in scholarly research.

“The CCCU is proud to partner with our member, Indiana Wesleyan University, a nationally recognized leader in adult education, to establish the Research Center in Adult Learning,” said Dr. Paul R. Corts, CCCU president.

“The research conducted through the Center will broadly benefit all of higher education as our colleges and universities increasingly focus programs and services to serve the adult community’s professional and lifelong learning needs,” he said.

Dr. Henry Smith, IWU President, and Dr. Mike Bonner, IWU’s Vice President for Adult and Graduate Operations, worked with CCCU officials to establish the Center.

Dr. Cynthia Tweedell, who joined IWU 10 years ago, has been named Executive Director of the Center. She has done research and taught online and onsite classes for nearly 30 years and, since 1998, has directed assessment of adult education programs at IWU.

IWU has record enrollment for 21st straight yearA record 15,442 students were enrolled for fall 2008 semester classes at Indiana Wesleyan University’s three colleges. It was the 21st consecutive year that IWU, now

Indiana’s largest private college, had reported a record enrollment. The 2008 numbers represented a 5 percent increase from the

previous year’s total enrollment of 14,756. Enrollment in traditional classes on the Marion campus topped

3,200 for the first time. There were 3,201 students enrolled for fall 2008 semester classes in Marion, compared to 3,050 students a year earlier.

More students also lived on the Marion campus, 2,600 in 2008 compared to 2,382 the previous year.

Over the past decade, the balance of students attending classes on IWU’s Marion campus has shifted steadily from commuter to residential. In 1997, 60 percent of traditional students lived on campus compared to 78 percent this year.

Enrollment in IWU’s adult education programs, which began in 1985, exceeded 11,000 students for the second consecutive year, enrolling 11,402.

IWU Wildcats have record seasonsEight conference championships. Four conference tournament championships. Five national championships.

Indiana Wesleyan University completed one of its finest athletic seasons in 2007-08. The Wildcats captured titles, broke records and placed many student-athletes on All-American lists.

From local dominance to national prominence, IWU continued to establish itself as a top-tier athletic program.

IWU won the Commissioner’s Cup for the seventh consecutive season as the Wildcats proved to be the overall best institution in the Mid-Central College Conference. The Commissioner’s Cup is based on points awarded to member schools for their team standings in each sport.

IWU ran away with the school’s 13th Commissioner’s Cup by winning eight of the 14 conference championships.

Highlighting the conference season were MCC championships by men’s and women’s cross country, golf, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis, volleyball and men’s track and field.

Four regular season champions also repeated as the MCC tournament champions. Men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis and volleyball earned the post-season title.

IWU also won the President’s Cup of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) as the best overall athletic program by winning five national championships – in women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s tennis and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

roTC graduates commissionedThe first two graduates of Indiana Wesleyan University’s Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program were commissioned on graduation day in April, a few hours

before they received their diplomas.Commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army were:• Micah Hoffman, from Chillicothe, Ohio, who graduated with

a B.S. degree in pre-art therapy. She will be a Signal Corps Officer, and her first assignment will be with the Indiana Army National Guard.

• Angelo Soto, from Aurora, Illinois, who graduated with a B.S. degree in psychology. He will be an Infantry Officer, and his first assignment will be with the Indiana Army National Guard.

IWU began its ROTC program three years ago, and about 60 students are currently enrolled. The IWU Department of Military Science has three full-time faculty members.

IWU buildings honor long-time professors

Two buildings on Indiana Wesleyan University’s Marion campus have new names.

IWU’s new Academic Building, which opened in August 2007, was named in honor of Dr. Marjorie Elder. She graduated from IWU in 1945 and began teaching English at the college the same year.

Elder, who still teaches half time, recently completed her 63rd year on the faculty. During her senior year at IWU, she became the first woman elected president of the student body.

Elder Hall houses the Division of Modern Language, Literature and Communication and the Division of Behavioral Sciences. Elder’s office is located in the building.

A women’s residence hall, which opened in 2004 and had been known as New Hall, was named in honor of Dr. Glenn Martin and his wife, Betty.

Glenn Martin, who died in 2004, served as Professor of History and Political Science for nearly 40 years and chaired the Division of Social Sciences for 30 years. Betty Martin worked in the IWU Advancement Department for many years.

Martin Hall provides housing for 210 students.

Construction is under way for Indiana Wesleyan University’s 3,800-seat chapel/auditorium, which is scheduled to open in January 2010. The building will

be the tallest and most significant in IWU history, representing a commitment to the spiritual foundation of the campus.

There will be two levels of seating in the building, with the balcony seats extending all the way to the first floor. Students sitting anywhere in the building will be able to walk to the altar without using a stairway or an elevator.

The new building will be used both as the campus chapel and will provide assembly space for large campus and community events such as graduations, conferences, lecture series and concerts.

Currently, Luckey Arena is the largest gathering space on campus. The arena seats about 2,500 people – for graduations and campus convocations – when folding chairs are placed on the gymnasium floor.

IWU chapel services now are held in the 1,200-seat auditorium of Phillippe Performing Arts Center, which opened in 1996. Initially, the auditorium seated the entire student body in one chapel service, but two services have been held since 1998.

Residential students on IWU’s Marion campus are required to attend chapel services, which are held three days a week during the school year. With almost 2,600 resident students, the two chapel services now are at their capacity.

Survey says IWU a ‘Great college to work for’Indiana Wesleyan University has been named one of America’s “Great Colleges to Work For,” based on a first-ever survey conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

“We are grateful not only for the recognition by The Chronicle of Higher Education, but for the candid survey responses by our employees,” said Neil Rush, IWU Human Resources Director.

“The results help underscore the progress we are making at enhancing the work experience at IWU. But, perhaps more importantly, the results compel us to continually strive for improvement in employment initiatives,” Rush said.

The assessment process was administered by ModernThink LLC, a human-resources consulting firm that has conducted many “Best Places to Work” surveys for various groups. The Chronicle and ModernThink worked with a panel of higher-education experts to design the questionnaires.

The latest award was the second such honor that IWU has received in the past two years. A year ago, the Best Christian Workplaces Institute named IWU one of the three Best Christian Workplaces in the country.

The Chronicle of Higher Education, which is based in Washington, D.C., is the No. 1 source of news and information for college and university faculty members and administrators. The weekly newspaper has about 80,000 subscribers and 350,000 readers.

IWU moves up in U.S. News college rankings

Indiana Wesleyan University was ranked 28th among Midwest Master’s Universities in the 2008 edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” which is published by U.S. News and World Report.

This year’s rankings represent a steady increase for IWU, which was ranked 31st in 2007 and 62nd in 2006.

IWU also was ranked 11th among Midwest Master’s Universities in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” section of the U.S. News report. The formula used to determine which colleges offer the best value relates a school’s academic quality to its overall cost.

The average out-of-pocket cost for IWU students is reduced by significant aid, which takes into account grants based on need that students received. Almost 80 percent of IWU students receive grants based on need.

Master’s universities, according to U.S. News, offer a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. IWU offers master’s degrees in business administration, management, counseling, education, ministry and nursing and one doctoral program in organizational leadership.

There are 574 master’s universities in the United States.

Dr. henry Smith talksrocks, resources and a new strategic plan

I remember reading one time that plans are nothing – planning

is everything,” says Dr. Henry Smith, who envisioned year two

of his presidency as “The Year of Planning.” So, after a transition

period, which saw the end of a previous planning cycle, President

Smith formalized a new strategic planning process with the

engagement of the Strategic Planning Council. This gathering of

faculty, administrators, students, community leaders and board

members met monthly throughout 2007-08, eventually crafting five

strategies, or “big rocks” as they are fondly referred to, which form

the new strategic plan. Faculty, staff, the Board of Trustees and other

University stakeholders have endorsed the strategic plan, which will

guide the University through the years 2008-11.

President Smith recently sat down for a Q&A concerning the strategic

plan. As this interview reveals, more questions and further dialogue

will drive that plan in the year ahead as those “rocks” roll into place at

Indiana Wesleyan University.

Q: The very first strategy speaks to our commitment to the Wesleyan tradition and the University’s spiritual vitality. Why is that essential to IWU?

A: The University was given birth by The Wesleyan Church. It’s important for us to not lose this essential relationship which defines our identity in many ways.

Our spiritual heritage is something we must never take for granted. And, to assure the future of this commitment at IWU, the most important asset are the people who serve here. The staff, faculty and administration must be spirit-filled, “mission fit” employees who are aligned with our essential DNA – our Christ-centered mission.

It is also fitting and appropriate that everyone – even those who don’t come from our theological tradition – understand our heritage. It is important that everyone who joins our academic community of faith has a sincere respect for and understanding of our Wesleyan tradition.

Q: The second strategy – teaching and learning – seems essential for a quality higher education. What is your vision for supporting excellence in academics?

A: First of all, we have a long tradition of being a teaching university – and doing that very well. That won’t change. But, scholarship is important. Scholarship informs and supports excellence in the classroom. We must do what is necessary to ensure professors are not so frantic with teaching overloads to where they can’t stay current in their academic discipline, attend national and regional conferences, write books, prepare scholarly articles – whatever it is that the discipline calls for. Our faculty must be engaged in the world of academia where they become salt and light while demonstrating the intersection of faith and learning. What I hope to see is a “re-engagement” of faculty who’ve been extremely busy teaching overloads dictated by our rapidly growing student body. But to do that requires getting ahead of the hiring curve and providing release time and additional funding for faculty. It is also essential that IWU have a higher percentage of faculty who have earned the highest degree in their field – usually the doctorate. To accomplish this, and move us toward premier status, will require financial support for those who are already at IWU and want to complete their doctorate, and also will require hiring more faculty who have the doctorate. I am hopeful that we may increase our percentage from the current nearly 60 percent to over 80 percent of terminally degreed faculty in the next five years.

Another key to increasing academic excellence is student engagement in scholarship. Increasingly, teaching institutions at the undergraduate level are engaging students in their professors’ research projects. For instance, our Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division is doing a very fine job leading the way in this area, and increasingly other disciplines are engaging students. This is exciting! I hope more students will attend academic conferences with our faculty. We need to be intentional in creating the next generation of qualified professionals for this institution, and for that matter, for other organizations.

VALUeSThe primary value for Indiana Wesleyan University is Christlikeness. The challenge to follow Christ compels us to pursue a personal and professional lifestyle of: Commitment, Leadership, Service, Stewardship, Innovation, Diversity.

16

IndIana Wesleyan UnIversIty

Q: The third strategy addresses culture. Does celebrating the richness of each culture within the University imply recruiting a more ethnically diverse community?

A: Absolutely! When you consider that we enroll traditional undergrads, graduate students, online students and adult and professional students in well over 100 sites across three states, we offer incredible diversity from the perspective of difference, but it is more than that. We need to be actively recruiting people of color, individuals of different life experiences and backgrounds who will bring diversity to IWU – especially in leadership positions. By doing that, we provide faces and connections that show by our actions we are serious about our intention to become a more ethnically diverse institution.

We need to find ways to tap into changing demographics as we attract and recruit students. But you don’t do that just because it’s an enrollment strategy. You do it because it’s the right thing – providing access and opportunity for all also enriches us all.

Q: You mentioned the overall vision of seeking to be a premier University changing the world for Christ. How does that happen?

A: I think it requires intentionality. We must continually ask key questions: “Are we the best in class? What do we mean by excellence? What does it mean to be premier?” We’ve been saying this past year that – We seek to be a premier University changing the world for Christ. A group of faculty leaders asked me to meet with them, and they wanted to know, “What does it mean to be a premier university?” My response was, “You tell me. Inform this institution what it means to be premier in your area of influence. What does it mean to have a premier communication program or a premier business program or to be premier in the sciences? Do we need more labs? Do we need faculty with more and stronger academic credentials?” I said to the group, “If you agree that we want to be a premier university, help determine and discover what we need to do to make it happen!”

Q: One of the strategies also speaks to global engagement.

A: You’ll notice that the idea of being a world changer, having global awareness and serving the global community is apparent in several strategies – two, three and four. We need to be serious about changing the world! You can’t be a world changer unless you are engaged in the world. It’s more that having a big globe in the rotunda of your library. Recently a group of our faculty and administrators presented a paper in Ireland. Next year we have students who are going to Zambia to study for the entire semester. We must engage the world and formalize this goal in ways we can assess it and measure it. I’m looking forward to individuals on campus who will help us answer the question “How can we be world changers?” I am excited that faculty have presented a proposal for the creation of a Center for Global Engagement. I think such a Center can provide a unifying structure that will facilitate this dream.

Q: How do we “enhance a service-oriented environment,” one of the objectives under strategy four?

A: If we believe in servant leadership, if we believe in serving our community, if we believe in being salt and light, then service has to be at the heart and soul of who we are. We must continually be looking for ways to serve this community. How can we make a difference in inner city Marion – we must take this need to heart. We must contribute to the betterment of Grant County. We must cheerfully serve our denomination and the church in many forms by serving the broader church community. We must do all we can to model and instill the importance of service for our students. Those who have taken vanloads of students to help those who experienced the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and have led students to southern Indiana where so many suffered the effects of spring floods are leading the way.

Q: What do you think is the key to securing and deploying resources for the future – strategy five?

CHArGeIndiana Wesleyan University will prepare each student to become a world changer. We will accomplish this by drawing students into an integrated experience of intellectual challenge, spiritual growth and leadership development. Thus we will: call students to Christian character; expect academic excellence; equip them for success in their vocation; mentor them for leadership; and prepare them for service.

17

Pres Ident’s rePort 2008

A: There is no simple answer to this question. In addition to being good stewards of the resources we have, we need to tell our story. I believe our vision – to change the world – is so bold and so big and so noble and needed today, that it resonates with the hearts and minds of others who have the capacity to partner with Indiana Wesleyan University and help us make this vision a reality. Daily, people who hear our story for the first time say, “That’s the kind of place I want to invest in.” I am so grateful for the friends and donors who are helping us grow student scholarships and helping students who otherwise could not attend IWU. Of the 180 schools in the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities last year, in terms of cost, we were around number 47 from the bottom. The IWU Board is passionate about keeping IWU affordable. As we commit to keeping tuition affordable, we must find dollars from gifts from our friends to keep this a reality.

Of course, we are passionately committed to exercise good stewardship with our resources. For example, when we talk about our beautiful, functional buildings, we use the term “elegant.” We don’t want them to be opulent or unnecessary. We are committed to be good stewards of the resources we have! But, and this is key, if our vision does not exceed the

resources that we have, our vision is not big enough. The vision in the plan exceeds our ability to accomplish it on our own.

There’s a lot packed into strategy number five, which talks about what kind of infrastructure will support growth and development. The infrastructure that works with 1,000 or 2,000 students and 300 employees is very different than when you have 15,000 students and over 1,000 employees. I anticipate that in this coming year we will take these five big, bold, strategic initiatives, these five “big rocks,” and ask, “What kinds of things should we be doing?” For example, we need 10 endowed faculty chairs! We need increased endowment for students to study abroad! We need our partners who are led by God and have the capacity to help us achieve our mission. I know God will provide.

Q: Where will this plan take us in the immediate and the long-range future?

A: We have grown every year for 21 years. This past year, 2007-08, we had another record enrollment. We anticipate major growth in traditional undergraduate as well as our other student populations in the coming years. This past year we were planning new locations where we would offer classes in the College of Adult and Professional Studies in 2008-09. So, this coming year we’re going to 30 new expanded locations in three states – Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. Plus, we are aggressively pursuing opportunities in the online world. We see online education as a major growth area for the future. I envision online education as a new summer school for traditional undergraduates. And, I’m excited for the possibilities for the worldwide reach of online education.

These are days of great potential that require bold action. Charting the course now is essential. At IWU, if we dream it and God wills it, we believe it can happen!

ViSiONWe seek to be a premier university changing the world for Christ.

In August of 2007, a newly appointed Strategic Planning Council began its work. Its charge was to (1) revisit the

University mission, values and vision statement and (2) pursue the transformation of people, programs and processes that could secure and sustain an even brighter future for Indiana Wesleyan University. For more than a year, the academic community had been engaged in dialogue about an emerging vision statement that read, “We seek to be a premier university changing the world for Christ.” The President and Cabinet believed that it was essential to operationalize the existing mission and values statement with a compelling strategic vision statement, key strategies and objectives to move the University forward in the 21st century. The strategic plan is a culmination of an entire year of engaged activity involving an appointed Strategic Planning Council that consisted of members from across the campus who collectively represent a cross-functional sector of the academic community. The current strategic plan for 2008-11 builds on the mission established in 2000.

The primary aims of the strategic plan are to guard our spiritual heritage, enhance teaching and learning and secure the future of the University. The concentrated efforts of the academic community enable us to adapt and respond proactively in a rapidly changing and competitive higher education environment. The University is committed to accountability; however, we understand that a strategic plan must be a living document that can translate to divisional, departmental and individual goals to attain the vision and accomplish the strategies. It is understood that this is a working document that can be modified as the University meets new challenges requiring refinement of our primary strategies and objectives.

The challenge of becoming a premier university changing the world for Christ does not end with the creation of a strategic plan. The ongoing process requires broad-based collaboration, sufficient funding and ongoing accountability in order to fulfill the mission,

values, charge, vision, strategies and objectives. The steadfast contributions of the entire academic community are vitally needed for the University to accomplish the mission and achieve the vision. The Board of Trustees, President’s Cabinet, and Strategic Planning Council understand that planning and goal achieving must be continuous, adaptive and engaging to ensure that the University remains innovative and responsive to an ever-changing environment in higher education.

Over the past 20 years, the University has met enormous challenges and seized great opportunities to serve the needs of students in an evangelical Christian university. The strategic plan must be interpreted and personalized to every division, college, department and individual across the University for us to sustain the accomplishments of the past and build a premier university. The strategies and objectives (at the right) will guide us into a world-changing future.

Leadership TeamTime of transition brings mix of senior and new administrators

David Wright Dwight Jessup Bud Bence

The selection of Dr. Henry Smith as the eighth

president of indiana Wesleyan University,

initiated what would be a diligent two-year

search to put a new leadership team in place.

in the months after Smith took office in july of

2006, one vice president retired; two left, one

to be a president and another a vice president

in a neighboring state; and two vice presidents

requested reassignment to previous duties.

“During my first two years as President, i knew

that developing a senior leadership team was

one of the most important things i had to do,”

Smith said. Following are brief overviews of

how he pulled his Cabinet together.

‘Bud Bence’ returns to classroom;

Jessup and Wright guide academics Dr. Clarence “Bud’ Bence, who had served three years as Vice

President and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, asked to return to the Division of Religion and Philosophy and be reassigned to his first love – teaching.

Bence has taught in the division since 1982, with the exception of a six-year break during which he served as Academic Vice President and Dean of the Chapel at Houghton College, IWU’s sister institution in New York State.

When a nationwide search failed to produce a new academic leader for the College of Arts and Sciences, Smith found an interim successor to Bence in Upland, Indiana, just 15 miles from the IWU campus.

Dr. Dwight Jessup, who has 45 years experience in Christian higher education, is a former Provost at Taylor University. For the past four years, he served in Kenya as chief academic officer of Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology.

Jessup agreed to serve for the 2008-09 academic year while a search continues for a permanent Vice President and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Smith, who was Provost and Chief Academic Officer of a Nazarene university before coming to IWU, understood the importance of having one administrator to provide oversight of all academic programs.

After the IWU Board of Trustees approved a new Office of the Provost, Dr. David Wright agreed to become the University’s first Chief Academic Officer. Wright previously served in a variety of leadership positions at IWU before spending the last three years as Dean of the School of Theology at Azusa Pacific University in California.

Shepherd returns to IWU roots;

Douglas is first female vice presidentJerry Shepherd accepted a challenge in 1985 to help launch

IWU’s new adult education program. Over the next two decades, the program would shape Shepherd’s career – including his two-plus years as Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing for IWU, which ended on January 1, 2008.

In 2007, Shepherd expressed a desire to return full-time to his first passion: recruiting students for IWU’s adult education program. Shepherd, who graduated from IWU in 1978, has been away from campus only two years since then.

He now serves as Associate Vice President of the Enrollment Management and Marketing Division with a focus on adult and graduate enrollment and marketing strategies.

In January of 2008, midway through the academic year, Kris Douglas succeeded Shepherd as Vice President of the division. She is the first woman to serve as an IWU Vice President.

Although Douglas is new to the President’s Cabinet, she is no stranger to IWU. She has been affiliated with the University since 1994 in a variety of roles – primarily in the areas of enrollment and marketing for IWU’s adult and graduate programs in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

Voss, senior leader, takes on added

responsibilitiesDr. Todd Voss, who came to IWU in 1987, is the longest-

serving member of the Cabinet. His 18 years as Vice President for Student Development demanded that Voss be familiar with all areas of the University.

During his tenure, Voss has witnessed firsthand the transformation of the University and was a key catalyst and active participant in much of that change. Smith tapped that experience

John Jones – report directly to Voss in his new senior leadership role. Voss also is responsible for intercollegiate athletics and the Dean of the Chapel Office.

Moffitt, Vice President for Student Development, oversees a team that represents 2,600 resident students. He joined the IWU student development department eight years ago and is the first African-American to serve as an IWU vice president.

Moffitt is a former wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers.Bowen, Vice President for Operations and Planning, came to

IWU in 1998 and was named to his current job two years later. He is responsible for the planning, construction and maintenance of all University buildings and grounds.

There are 40 buildings with a total of 1.6 million square feet of floor space on the 350-acre Marion campus.

John Jones, Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, joined IWU’s information technology department in 1997 as a network administrator and was promoted to vice president in 2005.

The information technology department has oversight of 2,l00 computers and 80 servers spread across IWU’s main campus plus 14 regional campuses in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

One veteran, one newcomer,

one promotion round out teamSmith completed his Cabinet by asking Elvin Weinmann to

remain as a vice president, inviting Dr. Brian Simmons to join the team and giving Dr. Mike Bonner expanded responsibilities.

Weinmann, Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer, has been keeping an eye on IWU’s finances for 15 years – for six years as an assistant vice president and, since 1999, as the University’s Chief Financial Officer.

Weinmann has oversight of University auxiliaries, including the bookstore and food service, as well as serving as secretary/treasurer of Wesleyan Retirement Centers, an IWU subsidiary that includes two health care facilities and a retirement community.

Dr. Brian Simmons became Vice President for University Relations in July 2006, the same month that Smith took office as IWU President. Before joining the University, Simmons was superintendent of Heritage Christian Schools in Indianapolis.

Dr. Mike Bonner, who came to IWU in 2003 to teach in the adult education program, was named Vice President for Adult and Graduate Operations in October 2005. He previously worked 25 years in the Montgomery County, Maryland, public schools as a teacher, principal, supervisor and central office administrator.

The Indiana Wesleyan University Board of Trustees and the

President’s Cabinet gathered in Orlando, Florida, in February,

along with a diverse group of presenters and facilitators. Their

assignments were to explore key themes for the long range

future of the University and to review the emerging strategic

plan being developed by the President’s Cabinet and the

University Strategic Planning Council.

At the end of the three-day retreat, Board Chairman Carl

Shepherd summarized his perspective on the themes that were

discussed as they related to the ongoing work of the Strategic

Planning Council. Shepherd’s summary included:

academic programming. The research and development of new

and innovative academic programs with funding is vital for IWU

to achieve its potential as a premier world-changing institution.

endowments/reserve funds. It is generally believed that the size

of IWU’s endowments/reserve funds must significantly increase

in order to stem the rising cost of a premier education for its

students while providing for the future maintenance and growth

of IWU’s growing physical plant.

Wesleyan seminary. The idea of IWU establishing a world-class

seminary with a worldwide influence is viewed favorably by the

IWU Board and administration.

World-Changing students. IWU must effectively develop students

with Christian character, a life calling and necessary life skills to

enable them to become world changers.

international focus. As a world-changing institution, IWU must

have a vision beyond its national border, including international

delivery systems and venues as well as opportunities for cross-

cultural experiences for both faculty and students.

Discussions at the Board retreat were facilitated by Shepherd,

Dr. Henry Smith, IWU President; Dr. Paul Corts, President of the

Council for Christian Colleges & Universities; Dr. Larry Lindsay,

IWU Chief of Staff; Mrs. Karen Hollenbeck, IWU Trustee; Mr. Ed

Hoover, Assistant Secretary of the IWU Board of Trustees; and Dr.

Todd Voss, IWU Executive Vice President.

On the horizon

Wesleyan seminary planned for IWU’s Marion campus IWU message to get boost with brand identity study

Indiana Wesleyan University, like many other progressive universities, has recognized the need to develop research-based and return on investment-focused integrated marketing strategies that focus on improving image and building brand strength.

To that end, IWU hired a firm that specializes in marketing, branding and research. The brand research company is leading the University through a major marketing and branding initiative that will involve extensive research with internal and external constituents.

The primary goal of the research is to develop a brand strategy for IWU, including a plan for positioning the University within the higher education maketplace for all types of students.

The brand strategy development process began in November 2008 and will culminate with the delivery of a brand-strategy planning document by year’s end. This document will drive the creation of new marketing materials during 2009.

A Seminary Task Force met for several months to discuss establishing a seminary on IWU’s main campus in Marion. The task force included members of the IWU Board of Trustees plus general officers and district superintendents of The Wesleyan Church.

The IWU Board of Trustees has considered setting aside all of the 2008 funds that will be provided to the University by The Wesleyan Church to be used toward the founding of the first Wesleyan seminary in the history of the denomination.

Indiana Wesleyan University is awaiting approval from the Higher Learning Commission to offer a Master of Divinity degree, which could be the foundation course for the seminary.

Tentative plans call for Master of Divinity classes to begin in the fall of 2009 with a possible seminary building ready for the fall of 2010, pending Board approval.

Residence halls studied to keep pace with enrollment

A new residence hall to accommodate 310 Indiana Wesleyan University students was approved by the IWU Board of Trustees at its October 2008 meeting. The new hall will be a mirror image of the North Hall Complex, which opened in the fall of 2007.

The plans call for the construction to begin in the spring of 2009 and the residence hall will welcome its first students in the fall of 2010.

The Board also approved the addition of three new townhouses. The townhouses would provide lodging for a total of 108 students.

The additional housing is needed to keep pace with increased enrollment on the Marion campus. The record enrollment of 3,201 for the fall 2008 semester resulted in a “full house” with every bed occupied. That is 150 more students than the previous year and represents the 21st straight year that the Marion campus has experienced record enrollments.

IWU students to spend semester abroad in Zambia

Thirteen Indiana Wesleyan University students will travel to Zambia in January of 2009 as the first participants in a new Semester Study Abroad program. Dr. Brad Garner, who has been on the IWU faculty for six years and now is an assistant dean, will accompany the students.

The study abroad program was developed in cooperation with World Hope International, a compassion ministry affiliated with The Wesleyan Church. The students will spend the entire spring semester in the African nation.

World Hope, which already has a presence in Zambia, has built a guesthouse where the students, Garner and his wife Sydney will stay. The house includes sleeping and dining facilities plus classrooms. Students will take classes and earn an entire semester’s credit.

Andrew Smith and Brittany Jordan were junior high school sweethearts who first heard about Indiana Wesleyan University when an admissions counselor visited their Christian high school in Aurora, Illinois.

The couple had an opportunity to attend larger state schools, but they chose to enroll together at IWU. It was a decision they have never regretted.

“Indiana Wesleyan gave us our start in life, even more than high school,” Andrew said. “That is where we flourished as individuals, both in our personal lives and in our walk with the Lord.”

Andrew and Brittany graduated from IWU in 2005. Andrew’s degree was in marketing, and Brittany completed a double major in business administration and finance. They were married at the end of their junior year of college in July 2004.

The Smiths, who live in Merrillville, Indiana, both have completed master of business administration degrees since they left IWU. Brittany works in the accounting department of ArcelorMittal, a steel manufacturing firm in northwest Indiana.

Andrew recently began his final year at the Valparaiso University School of Law. He worked for an Indianapolis law firm during the summer and hopes to join a private law practice.

Since graduating from IWU, Andrew and Brittany have given faithfully to the University’s annual fund. They are part of a small minority of graduates who began a tradition of giving to their alma mater immediately after graduation.

“We still have many friends who attend IWU, and we want to do whatever we can to support the University,” Andrew said. “IWU’s mission is important to us.”

Brittany’s father, Darrell Jordan, serves Indiana Wesleyan as a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Excellence. He is an attorney and owner of a law title insurance company in Aurora, Illinois.

Giving tradition begins early

Half a century ago, Dr. Harold Bardsley received his bachelor’s degree from the college that is now Indiana Wesleyan University. That was just the beginning of what has become a life-long relationship with IWU.

Dr. Bardsley is beginning his 32nd year as a member of the IWU Board of Trustees – and he has been Vice President of the Board for 31 years. He has served with five University presidents and was on the committee that hired most of them.

In connection with his 50-year class reunion, Dr. Bardsley headed an initiative to raise $50,000 for a new IWU program in Zambia. A project he initiated years ago – the Alumni Phone-A-Thon – now raises about $150,000 annually.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in religion and philosophy, Dr. Bardsley served 20 years as pastor of the Greentown Wesleyan Church. He received a master’s degree in ministerial education and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from IWU.

Dr. Bardsley has devoted the last 30 years of his career to church administration, including 16 years as superintendent of the Indiana North District of The Wesleyan Church. In June, he received a medallion from the denomination for 50 years of service.

Dr. Bardsley also has received a Meritorious Service Award from the IWU Alumni Association. He is a former president of the association.

The 17 buildings constructed during Dr. Bardsley’s tenure as a trustee are the most visible evidence of his rich legacy of giving to his alma mater.

“It’s truly a God thing,” he said. “The development of the campus and the increased enrollment are proof that when you get God in the driver’s seat, you’ll get to the right place.”

Dr. Bardsley’s 50-year association with the University recently came full circle when he and his wife, Joan, moved to a condominium, which adjoins the IWU campus.

Wayne and Margaret Pence have established eight scholarships at Indiana Wesleyan University. The scholarships are for students who intend to enter the ministry or missionary work. Wayne Pence was driving a tractor on his Indiana farm when he first sensed that God was calling him. Pence answered the call.

One of his first discoveries was that most Christian bookstores didn’t carry the type of books he wanted to help him understand his newly acquired faith. So, in 1974, Pence opened Living Water Christian Bookstore in Marion, Indiana.

He secured the capital for the store by selling several hogs. And, for several months, he continued to sell hogs to keep the shelves stocked with Christian literature.

A year later, he opened a second bookstore in Kokomo – and gave friends an opportunity to invest in the store. One couple who invested was Bob and Margaret Swinford. Margaret became the manager for the Kokomo store.

Fast forward to December 2007. That’s when Pence and the former Margaret Swinford were married, after the deaths of their spouses. A few months before the wedding, Pence closed the Marion store and sold the Kokomo store.

“We were both retirement age,” Pence said. “We wanted to be able to travel and enjoy life.” The Pences live in Kokomo.

“The Lord blessed us as farmers, and we also had a solid business in the bookstores,” Pence said. “We wanted to give back, and a good way to do that is by helping students who need a financial boost to succeed in college.”

Pence’s daughter and two of his grandchildren are IWU graduates.

Pence also donated a work of art, titled Armor of God, to IWU. The art, made entirely from pieces of wood, will hang in IWU’s recently renovated Noggle Christian Ministries Center.

It is nearly impossible to walk across the Indiana Wesleyan University campus without seeing the generosity of Wilbur and Ardelia Williams, two of the University’s best-known professors.

In September, Dr. Wilbur Williams began his 41st year as Professor of Biblical Literature and Archaelogy at IWU. For the last 13 years, the 79-year-old Williams has been paid $1 a year.

Dr. Ardelia Williams, who retired in 2002 after 35 years as the coordinator of the IWU Art Department, also received $1 a year during the final seven years of her teaching career.

The Williamses set aside their salaries to pay for the $500,000 Williams Prayer Chapel that opened in 2001 in the center of campus. Ardelia made the stained-glass windows for the building, which is a replica of a 12th-century Gothic chapel.

While the chapel is the most visible sign of their generosity, the Williamses also have commissioned three campus sculptures – including one of the suffering Christ that adorns the front of the Prayer Chapel.

Most recently, the couple began systematically donating several of their rental properties to IWU. The 40-plus properties that they have acquired over the years are located in areas that IWU has designated for campus expansion.

“When I began acquiring rental property, my desire was not to make money but to serve the Lord,” Wilbur said. “Even then, I had a vision of someday building a prayer chapel on campus and being able to help pay for mission trips for students.”

In addition to teaching full-time for more than four decades, Wilbur also found time to personally do most of the maintenance on his rental properties.

“Teaching always was more important than acquiring and maintaining property,” he said. “At my age, it’s time to make teaching my only priority.”

professors’ generosity is felt campus wide
